Xbox’s direction is clearer. Microsoft is continuing to build new Xbox hardware while expanding the Xbox platform across consoles, Windows PCs, handhelds, cloud gaming, and other screens. In practical terms, Xbox is becoming less dependent on a single box—and Halo is one of the clearest examples of that change.

The short answer
- Halo’s immediate future: support and extend Halo: Campaign Evolved, a ground-up Unreal Engine 5 remake of Halo: Combat Evolved.
- Halo’s long-term direction: future development is moving toward Unreal Engine 5, but the next original game remains officially unannounced.
- Xbox’s hardware future: Microsoft is developing Project Helix, a next-generation Xbox intended to run both console and PC games. Developer alpha hardware is planned for 2027, but no consumer launch date or price has been announced.
- Xbox’s platform future: games and services will increasingly reach Xbox consoles, PCs, handhelds, cloud devices, and—where Microsoft chooses—competing consoles.
That means fans should not buy current Xbox hardware solely on the assumption that an unannounced Halo sequel will be exclusive. At the same time, claims that Xbox is abandoning consoles are contradicted by Project Helix.
Halo: Campaign Evolved is the current Halo release
Campaign Evolved is not Halo 7 or a numbered sequel. It is a ground-up remake of Halo: Combat Evolved, rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5 and expanded with new content.

The remake includes the original campaign alongside three new missions forming the Operation: METEORITE story arc. It also adds or expands modern features including:
- Two-player split-screen co-op on consoles.
- Up to four-player online co-op.
- Cross-play between supported platforms.
- Shared progression.
- Expanded weapons and vehicles.
It launched on July 28, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S, PC and Steam, and PlayStation 5. Xbox also announced cloud availability, subject to the usual subscription, device, region, and network requirements. The launch details are documented in Xbox’s launch announcement and Halo Waypoint’s story information.
Qualifying Premium and Collector’s Edition purchases received early access beginning July 23, but that window is now historical. For someone buying after launch, the relevant choice is standard purchase versus Game Pass access—not whether early access is still available.
Why the remake matters beyond its campaign
Campaign Evolved serves several purposes at once.
First, it is a 25th-anniversary celebration of the game that established Halo as an Xbox flagship. That gives Halo Studios a familiar foundation rather than asking players to immediately embrace an entirely new setting or cast.

Second, it is a lower-risk way to bring lapsed fans back. A remake can use a known campaign while modernizing its presentation, co-op, controls, and platform availability. It is also an accessible entry point for PlayStation players, since it is the first Halo game officially released on PlayStation 5.
Third, it is an important Unreal Engine 5 project. Halo Studios has described Project Foundry as an Unreal Engine 5 research effort exploring the future of Halo development. That makes Campaign Evolved more than a standalone celebration: it is a public demonstration of the tools and production direction that could support later projects.
That last point is an inference, not a promise. Unreal Engine 5 may help with asset workflows, staffing, visual ambition, physics, and cross-platform deployment, but it does not automatically make development faster or guarantee that future Halo projects will avoid the problems associated with previous releases.
What Halo Studios has—and has not—announced
| Confirmed | Not confirmed |
|---|---|
| Halo Studios is building the future of Halo with Unreal Engine. | The title of the next original Halo game. |
| Campaign Evolved is the studio’s next currently announced project and has now launched. | Whether the next game will be called Halo 7. |
| Project Foundry is investigating Unreal Engine 5 workflows and possibilities. | Whether the next game will continue Halo Infinite’s story. |
| Campaign Evolved supports Xbox, PC, cloud access, and PlayStation 5. | Whether the next project will be campaign-first, multiplayer-first, or combine both. |
| The studio has not publicly listed a new original Halo title on its official project page. | Its release date, multiplayer model, Master Chief involvement, or final platform list. |
This is why headlines about “the next Halo” need careful reading. There is a confirmed remake and a confirmed engine direction, but there is no official announcement of Halo 7, a battle royale, an extraction shooter, or a new multiplayer replacement for Halo Infinite.

What happens to Halo Infinite?
The public evidence does not justify declaring Halo Infinite definitively finished or replaced. Campaign Evolved represents a new public-facing direction for the franchise, but the official Halo Studios material does not provide a complete post-Infinite roadmap.
The responsible conclusion is narrower: fans should not assume that a new Halo service, campaign, or succession plan is imminent unless Halo Studios announces one. The remake may be part of a broader transition, but the details of that transition remain undisclosed.
This distinction matters because the launch of a remake does not, by itself, prove that every existing Halo service has ended. Continuing support, a handoff, or a successor for Infinite should be treated as unknown until supported by current official information.
Why Unreal Engine 5 changes Halo’s outlook
The move away from 343 Industries’ proprietary Slipspace Engine toward Unreal Engine 5 is one of the most consequential changes in Halo’s recent history. The studio rebrand from 343 Industries to Halo Studios and the engine transition together signal a reset in how the franchise is being developed.

A widely used engine can potentially make it easier to recruit developers, share tools, reuse assets, and build experiences for multiple platforms. Unreal Engine 5 also provides modern systems for rendering, world building, animation, physics, and online development. A shared technical foundation could make it more practical for Halo Studios to support different kinds of Halo experiences rather than treating every project as an isolated technology effort.
But there are trade-offs. Moving engines can require substantial retraining and asset conversion. A new toolset does not resolve design disagreements, production-management problems, or the challenge of maintaining a live multiplayer game. Nor does broader platform support automatically produce a better campaign or competitive experience.
The useful way to view Campaign Evolved is as evidence of a new foundation—not evidence that the foundation has already produced a confirmed sequel.
Xbox’s next generation is bigger than a console
Microsoft’s 2026 strategy identifies four priorities: hardware, content, experience, and services. Its stated goal is a global Xbox platform spanning console, PC, handhelds, cloud gaming, and other screens.

Project Helix confirms that a next-generation Xbox console is in development. According to Microsoft’s announcement, the system will use a custom AMD system-on-chip and is being designed to run both Xbox console games and PC games. Microsoft is also working on next-generation DirectX and FidelityFX Super Resolution technology, while continuing its ambitions for backward compatibility across four Xbox generations.
Developer hardware is planned to begin shipping in alpha form in 2027. That is not a consumer launch announcement. Microsoft has not disclosed Project Helix’s retail release date, price, final specifications, storage options, disc-drive plans, accessories, or whether there will be multiple consumer models.
The broader Xbox experience is also being made more consistent across console, Windows, handhelds, and cloud. Xbox says its Play Anywhere catalogue now exceeds 1,500 games, although a Steam purchase does not automatically mean that the same purchase transfers to Xbox. Storefront ownership and Xbox ecosystem benefits remain separate considerations.
Is Xbox abandoning console exclusives?
“Yes” and “no” are both too simple.
Xbox is still investing in dedicated hardware, and Project Helix would make little sense if Microsoft intended to leave the console business immediately. At the same time, Microsoft is deliberately expanding access to games through PCs, handhelds, cloud services, other storefronts, and selected competing consoles.
Recommended Free Tools
It is more useful to separate four ideas:
- Console exclusivity: a game is available on Xbox but not PlayStation.
- Platform exclusivity: a game remains within Xbox-owned platforms such as Xbox consoles, Windows PC, and cloud.
- Launch exclusivity: Xbox gets the game first, with other versions potentially arriving later.
- Ecosystem advantage: features such as Game Pass, Play Anywhere, cross-save, cloud access, and shared libraries make Xbox’s network more valuable even when a game is sold elsewhere.
Campaign Evolved is a concrete example of the new model: it is a Halo game on Xbox, PC, Steam, and PlayStation 5. That expands the potential audience instead of using Halo solely as a reason to purchase Xbox hardware.
It does not prove that every future Halo game will launch on PlayStation. The platform policy for the next original Halo remains unknown.

Game Pass is central to Xbox’s services strategy. Depending on the plan, subscribers may receive access to a catalogue, online console multiplayer, cloud gaming, day-one releases, and additional benefits. Microsoft’s current Game Pass page lists Essential, Premium, Ultimate, and PC Game Pass options with different catalogues and release windows.
Campaign Evolved is available day one to eligible plans, including Ultimate and PC Game Pass. That makes a subscription practical for players who want to try the remake alongside other Xbox-published releases.

- PC READY. NO EXTRAS NEEDED — Plug the USB-C cable into your Windows PC and you're playing instantly. No adapters, no Bluetooth pairing, no additional purchases required. Works across the XBOX app, Steam, and more.*
- MODERNIZED DESIGN — Experience sculpted surfaces and refined geometry designed around how you actually hold a controller. Stay on target with a hybrid D-pad and textured grip on the triggers, bumpers, and back case.
- UP TO 40 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — Get up to 40 hours of wireless battery life on standard AA batteries. When the batteries run low, plug in the included cable and keep playing without missing a beat.*
However, Game Pass is access, not permanent ownership. Access can depend on subscription status, catalogue availability, region, platform, and plan. A standalone purchase is the clearer choice for someone who expects to return to the campaign for years or plays only one game.
PlayStation 5 owners cannot use Xbox Game Pass to access the PlayStation version. They must purchase that version through the PlayStation ecosystem. Prices, promotions, taxes, and plan availability vary by region and can change, so outdated subscription prices should not be used to make the decision.
Which platform makes sense now?
Xbox Series X|S
Choose Xbox if you want Game Pass integration, an existing Xbox library, local split-screen co-op, backward compatibility, and the broadest connection to Microsoft’s console ecosystem. The current Series X product page lists 1TB disc-drive, 1TB all-digital, 2TB disc-drive Galaxy Black, and limited-edition configurations, although availability can change.
Do not buy a Series X|S solely because you expect an unannounced Halo sequel to be exclusive. Project Helix is already in development, and the future platform policy is not settled.
Windows PC or Steam
PC is the strongest fit for players who want adjustable graphics settings, mouse-and-keyboard support, higher performance ceilings, or hardware flexibility. PC Game Pass can provide access through Microsoft’s ecosystem, while Steam offers a separate purchase route.
The trade-off is cost and complexity: performance depends on hardware, drivers, and settings, and Steam ownership does not necessarily provide Xbox Play Anywhere rights.
PlayStation 5
A PS5 is now a legitimate way to play Campaign Evolved without buying Xbox hardware. It is especially sensible for players who already own the console or want to play co-op with other supported platforms.
It is not the best fit if you specifically want Game Pass, Xbox backward compatibility, Play Anywhere, or integration with future Xbox hardware.

Cloud gaming is useful for sampling the game without a current console or gaming PC, provided the title, device, region, and subscription support it. Latency, image quality, queues, and network reliability can vary. Cloud availability also does not mean that every purchased or Game Pass title can be streamed.
The next 12–24 months: what is most likely?
High confidence
- Continued support, promotion, and technical discussion around Campaign Evolved.
- More information about Unreal Engine 5 development and Project Foundry.
- Further Xbox expansion across PC, handhelds, console, and cloud.
- Additional Project Helix information as developer hardware work progresses.
- More Game Pass and cross-device integration.
Medium confidence
- A formal announcement of the next original Halo project.
- More explanation of how future Halo projects relate to Halo Infinite.
- Additional content or modes informed by the technology used for Campaign Evolved.
- A future Halo multiplayer announcement.
Low confidence and speculation
- A project officially named Halo 7.
- A battle royale or extraction shooter.
- A specific 2027 or 2028 release date for the next mainline Halo.

- A new multiplayer product definitively replacing Halo Infinite.
Until Halo Studios announces those details, they should remain possibilities—not roadmap facts.
Quick Recap
What players should do now
- Play through Game Pass if you already subscribe to an eligible plan and want to sample Campaign Evolved or other Xbox releases.
- Buy the standalone game if permanent access matters, you play only one or two titles, or you are on PlayStation 5.
- Use Xbox or PC if you want the fullest Xbox ecosystem, including Game Pass and existing Xbox libraries.
- Use PS5 if you already own one and your priority is playing Campaign Evolved rather than accessing Xbox services.
- Wait before buying hardware for the next Halo because neither the next original Halo’s platforms nor Project Helix’s consumer launch details are confirmed.
- Follow official announcements from Halo Waypoint and Xbox Wire rather than treating rumor-based release lists as confirmed plans.
