Niantic completed the sale of its games business to Scopely on May 29, 2025. The deal, announced in March, was valued at $3.5 billion by Scopely and covered Pokémon GO, Pikmin Bloom, Monster Hunter Now, and related services. Scopely is owned by Savvy Games Group, which Reuters places in the ownership chain of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
What Niantic sold—and when
Niantic announced the agreement on March 12, 2025; Scopely later updated its announcement to confirm the transaction closed on May 29. The acquired business included Pokémon GO, Pikmin Bloom, Monster Hunter Now, and the companion apps and services Campfire and Wayfarer. Scopely said more than 400 Niantic gamemakers joined its organization.

Who owns Scopely?
Scopely is a wholly owned entity of Savvy Games Group, according to Savvy’s announcement. Reuters reported that Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund owns Savvy as part of its games investment strategy. Calling Scopely “Saudi-owned” refers to this ownership chain; it does not mean the Saudi government directly operates the games.

What happens to the games after the sale?
Scopely said the game teams would continue their roadmaps under long-time studio leaders. In its account of the deal, the buyer emphasized continuity for creative leadership, talent, products, and live-service operations. That is Scopely’s stated approach, rather than an independent assessment of how integration has worked.
Scopely also described the business as having more than 30 million monthly active players and more than $1 billion in revenue in 2024. It reported that Pokémon GO alone had more than 100 million unique players in 2024. These are company-reported figures for the periods specified, not independent estimates.

What Niantic kept and how the deal’s other figures differ
Niantic said it would shift its focus to geospatial technology. Reuters reported that its geospatial AI business became Niantic Spatial, led by founder John Hanke, with $250 million in initial capital: $200 million from Niantic’s balance sheet and $50 million from Scopely. Reuters also reported a separate $350 million distribution to Niantic equity holders.
