Nibbler displays analysis; a separate engine such as Lc0 or Stockfish does the evaluating. Its documented tools include candidate-move graphics, win-rate visualization, game analysis, PGN and FEN workflows, and Chess960 support.
What Nibbler does—and what it does not
The Nibbler project describes the program as an analysis GUI for UCI engines, with extra features for Lc0. It presents an engine’s current assessment of a position and can direct analysis toward one or more specified moves. Nibbler is not itself the engine: you supply a compatible engine program and use Nibbler to view and work with its analysis.
The project says Nibbler also more-or-less works with traditional engines such as Stockfish. That is compatibility guidance from the project, not a guarantee that every engine or version behaves identically. For Stockfish, its README recommends MultiPV set to 1 and configuring CPU threads and hash for maximum strength.
Analysis and study features
The project documents these capabilities; their availability and behavior can depend on the engine and software version.

Set up Lc0 in Nibbler
The official Lc0 guide for Nibbler, last updated 2025-10-05, gives the basic engine-selection workflow. You need the Lc0 executable; choosing a particular weights file is optional in the guide.
- Open Nibbler and choose Engine → Choose engine.
- Select the
lc0.exefile. The guide uses this Windows-style filename; the executable name or file-selection details may differ by operating system or release. - If you want to specify a particular Lc0 weights file, select it as well. The guide describes this as optional.
- Start analysis with Control-G or Analysis → Go. Halt it with Control-H or Analysis → Halt.
The same guide also describes using Nibbler to play against Leela. Menu labels and key bindings come from the official instructions and may vary by operating system or version.

Check platform support before downloading
The upstream README describes standalone Windows and Linux releases as being uploaded from time to time. It also documents running Nibbler from source with Electron and mentions community-made macOS builds. Those descriptions do not establish that every platform has an equally current, maintained official binary.
Before downloading, check the Nibbler releases page for assets that match your operating system, then consult the project’s platform instructions. The repository identifies its license as GPL-3.0; consult the project and license terms for questions about use or redistribution rather than assuming rights beyond those terms.

Do you need special hardware or accessories?
The documented workflow requires software: Nibbler, a UCI engine such as Lc0, and optionally an Lc0 weights file. The official Nibbler and Lc0 materials do not establish a Nibbler-specific physical accessory or computer component as a requirement. They also do not provide a hardware benchmark or a basis for recommending a particular GPU or computer. A physical chessboard, books, or other chess accessories are not part of the described GUI-and-engine setup.

- How the GUI selects and configures engines, and which UCI engines and versions it supports.
- Whether its analysis visualization—such as candidate moves and win-rate information—fits how you study.
- How it handles PGN and FEN files, game analysis, and variations.
- Whether it supports Chess960 if you need that variant.
- Whether a suitable release is currently available for your operating system.
