That was a projection, not a reported 2024 result. Niko later put China’s 2024 video-game player spending at $49.2 billion, but the two figures have different stated scopes and cannot be treated as a like-for-like forecast score.
What did Niko Partners forecast in 2020?
Niko Partners’ May 6, 2020 announcement said China’s PC and mobile game revenue was $33.1 billion in 2019 and projected it would pass $46.7 billion by 2024. The forecast covered PC and mobile games; it was not presented as a total for every part of China’s games business.
Niko estimated that China had 685 million gamers in 2019 and forecast 772 million by 2024. Those player counts were estimates and forecasts from the same 2020 release, not later confirmed totals. Niko Partners’ 2020 announcement gives the figures and explains that its five-year model had been revised in light of COVID-19, regulation, and other market factors.
How did the forecast break down by platform?
| Measure | 2019 figure reported in 2020 | 2024 projection published in 2020 |
|---|---|---|
| PC and mobile game revenue | $33.1 billion | More than $46.7 billion |
| Mobile game revenue | $18.5 billion, up 18.2% from the prior year | $32.0 billion, excluding mobile-game exports |
| PC game revenue | $14.6 billion, down 4% | not stated in the announcement |
All figures in the table are from Niko Partners’ May 2020 release and refer to its reporting or forecast at that time. Niko described a weaker outlook for PC than for mobile. It pointed to internet-cafe disruption and title licensing delays as pressures on the revised PC outlook, while mobile demand supported a stronger mobile projection. Contemporary GamesBeat coverage also described this pandemic-era adjustment, but Niko’s release is the source for the exact figures. Niko Partners; GamesBeat.

What did Niko say about COVID-19 and player behavior?
Niko’s 2020 release reported that 95% of respondents to its China COVID-19 impact survey said they were playing more because of quarantine. That is a survey result among Niko’s respondents, not evidence that 95% of all Chinese gamers increased their play.
The forecast was not attributed to the pandemic alone. Lisa Cosmas Hanson, Niko Partners president at the time, said: “These reports analyze market data results, the trends that inform the annual forecast through 2024, and the change in Niko’s previous market model and forecast that is a result of COVID-19, regulations, and other market factors,”

How big was China’s video game market in 2024?
In a June 3, 2025 release, Niko Partners reported that China player spending on video games reached $49.2 billion in 2024, up 3.6% year over year. This is a later reported estimate, not the original 2020 forecast.
The figures should not be directly compared as though they measure the same thing. The 2020 projection explicitly covered PC and mobile game revenue; the 2025 release describes player spending on video games. The published descriptions do not establish identical segment coverage or accounting definitions, so the later $49.2 billion figure does not by itself show that the $46.7 billion forecast was exactly on target. Niko Partners’ 2025 market release reports the 2024 spending estimate.

How did Niko build its forecast?
Niko said its analysis drew on online surveys of Chinese gamers, market-trend analysis, estimates of leading games and company market shares, policy and regulation review, publisher interviews, and examination of growth drivers. It also reviewed distribution, hardware, payments, and internet cafes. These inputs describe the methodology Niko said it used; they do not make every forecast assumption a settled explanation of the eventual 2024 result.
