Nintendo Switch 2: Is Nintendo’s Hybrid Sequel the Upgrade You Want?

Nintendo Switch 2 adds new controls and social features to Nintendo’s hybrid format, but game and accessory compatibility has exceptions. Here’s what to check before upgrading.

Nintendo Switch 2 keeps the original system’s core idea: play handheld, set it on a table, or connect it to a TV. It adds larger hardware, magnetic Joy-Con 2 controllers with mouse-style use in compatible games, and social features such as GameChat. Whether it is worth upgrading depends on the games you want, how much you play on a TV, and whether the older games and accessories you rely on are supported.

The system launched on June 5, 2025. Nintendo’s US launch MSRP was $449.99 for the console or $499.99 for a bundle with a digital copy of Mario Kart World; those are historical launch prices, not current offers.

What changes with Switch 2?

Switch 2 is a hybrid successor rather than a departure from the original format. Nintendo describes handheld, tabletop, and TV-connected play. Its new Joy-Con 2 controllers attach magnetically, and either can work like a mouse in compatible software. A C Button provides access to GameChat.

The Associated Press reported that media members got an exclusive look at the system in April 2025 and described trying the mouse-control feature at that event. That is an event observation, not a guarantee that every game uses the feature. AP also quoted Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser saying, “You’ll be joining us as we step into a new era of Nintendo,” and Switch 2 director Takuhiro Dohta saying through a translator, “Because of the environment were in, it’s a hands-on experience.”

Nintendo Switch 2 System

  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

Handheld, tabletop, or TV play

The purchase makes the most sense if you value being able to move between portable and TV play. If you mainly play docked, consider whether the games you want and the display-specific improvements justify the console for your setup. Nintendo says 4K output requires a supported game and a compatible display, and is capped at 60 fps; it is not a system-wide promise that every game runs at 4K or at a fixed frame rate. TechRadar’s review reports 4K/60 performance for particular upgraded titles, while its criticism of the first-party launch lineup is a reviewer’s judgment, not a universal performance result.

Controllers and accessories

Joy-Con 2 work attached to Switch 2 in handheld mode or wirelessly in tabletop mode. Nintendo Support says up to eight wireless controllers may pair, with the actual maximum depending on controller type and features in use. Original Switch Joy-Con can connect wirelessly to Switch 2, as can older peripherals such as the original Pro Controller. Compatibility is not symmetrical: Joy-Con 2 cannot be used with the original Switch.

Some older accessories require original Joy-Con. Nintendo specifically identifies the Ring-Con for Ring Fit Adventure and the Leg Strap for Nintendo Switch Sports. Check Nintendo’s compatibility guidance for the exact game and accessory you own before assuming your setup will carry over.

Can you play original Switch games on Switch 2?

Compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games can be played on Switch 2, and Nintendo Accounts and eShop access carry over when you link your account. But Nintendo warns that some titles are unsupported or may not work fully. Before buying or transferring a specific game, use Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility information and check for any title-specific limitation.

Nintendo Switch Online membership benefits can continue on Switch 2. Nintendo also identifies some services, including the GameCube Nintendo Classics library, as Switch 2-specific. Check Nintendo’s current service details for availability and membership terms relevant to your account and region.

What are GameChat and GameShare, and what do they require?

GameChat

GameChat adds online voice and video chat and game-screen sharing. Nintendo says online GameChat features require an internet connection, a Nintendo Account, and a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Video features also require a compatible USB camera. Availability varies by country, so check Nintendo’s local service information before planning to use it.

GameShare

GameShare lets someone with a Switch 2 and a compatible game invite others to play temporarily through local play, using Switch 2 or Switch systems in the ways Nintendo supports. It is not a transfer of ownership, and it does not mean every game can be shared. Look for GameShare support on the specific title you want to play together.

Which Switch 2 games and buying options matter?

Nintendo released Mario Kart World as a Switch 2-exclusive game on June 5, 2025, and announced a system bundle containing a digital copy. At US launch, Nintendo of America set the standalone console MSRP at $449.99 and the bundle MSRP at $499.99. These figures describe launch pricing in the United States, not today’s price or a guarantee of current stock. Check your local retailer for current console and game prices, bundle contents, and regional availability before comparing totals.

To decide whether an upgrade is worthwhile, compare the options that affect your actual use:

  • Games: Identify the Switch 2 releases you want, then weigh them against the games you already own and play.
  • Play mode: Consider whether you will use handheld portability, tabletop play, TV output, or a mix.
  • Old library: Confirm compatibility for the particular games and save or account setup you care about.
  • Bundle value: Compare the exact included game and current total price with buying the console and game separately.
  • Online features: Factor in GameChat’s account, internet, membership, camera, and regional requirements if those features are central to your plans.
  • Existing gear: Check which old controllers and peripherals work, and whether your games require original Joy-Con.

Do you need extra accessories?

No accessory is essential for everyone. Choose additions to solve a specific need rather than assuming they are required:

  • Switch 2 Pro Controller: A separate controller to consider if you mostly play docked.
  • Carrying case: Useful if the system will travel with you.
  • Compatible USB camera: Needed for GameChat’s video features, not for the console’s basic play modes.
  • microSD Express storage: Check the card standard and device fit before purchasing; do not assume an unspecified ordinary microSD card is suitable.

Nintendo notes that games, systems, memberships, and some accessories are sold separately. Verify current compatibility and product details before choosing accessories for a particular use.
