Ninja Gaiden 4 is at its best when its demanding, fast combat clicks: learning enemy patterns, choosing when to defend, and turning an opening into a long attack sequence can be exhilarating. But reviewers also found a forgettable plot and stretches of scripted platforming that interrupt the action. It is a strong fit for players chasing precision combat, and a more qualified recommendation for anyone looking first for story or exploration.
What is Ninja Gaiden 4?
Developed by PlatinumGames and Team NINJA and published by Xbox Game Studios, Ninja Gaiden 4 released on October 21, 2025. PlatinumGames lists the game for Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PS5, as well as Game Pass. Its story follows young ninja Yakumo through a near-future Tokyo shrouded in miasma after an ancient enemy returns; his fate becomes linked to that of series veteran Ryu Hayabusa. The official pitch centers on high-speed combat, precision, Bloodbind Ninjutsu weapon transformations, and returning techniques such as the Izuna Drop and Flying Swallow. How good is the combat?
Combat is the main reason to play. TechRadar and PC Gamer both praise the speed and precision, describing an action loop that rewards learning when enemies attack and how they respond. That means success is less about mashing through encounters than recognizing a safe opening, managing defense, and converting it into offense. TechRadar also highlights enemy variety, the balance between attack and defense, and substantial chapter-ending bosses. These are review judgments, not a claim that every player will experience the same difficulty or payoff. TechRadar’s review · PC Gamer’s review
Bloodraven turns power into a timing decision
Yakumo’s Bloodraven form is not simply a permanent damage boost: it uses a resource gauge. TechRadar says the form strengthens attacks and can break enemy guards or interrupt certain attacks, while gauge management becomes more important later in the game. The design intent, as explained by producer/director Yuji Nakao, was to preserve the series’ established combat mechanics while making the flashy forms feel like “bombs” that fit naturally into the combat flow. PlatinumGames describes Obliteration Techniques as a way to fill the Bloodbind Gauge; using Bloodraven can then lead to absorbing Blood Essence and continuing the cycle. Nakao’s developer blog

Yakumo and Ryu offer contrasting styles
Yakumo brings the new, more acrobatic approach, built around Bloodbind transformations. Nakao describes him as bold and lean, in contrast with Ryu, whose core moves and familiar feel were preserved and refined. TechRadar likewise frames the pair as distinct combat presences. Their contrast gives the game a way to mix fresh mechanics with the series’ returning hero rather than making the new lead feel like a simple substitute. PlatinumGames’ design notes
What are the main drawbacks?
The story is not the selling point
TechRadar calls the plot unremarkable. The premise supplies a near-future setting and a connection between Yakumo and Ryu, but the cited review’s main enthusiasm is for the fighting, not narrative depth. Players who need a compelling story to carry an action game should temper expectations.

Some traversal breaks the flow
TechRadar also criticizes scripted, on-rails platforming for being overused. Those sequences can feel like interruptions if what you want is sustained control over fights and movement. The same review finds the environments less striking than those in some earlier entries, so this is not the strongest choice for players primarily seeking varied exploration or memorable locations.
Is Ninja Gaiden 4 too hard?
It is built around demanding combat, but the official accessibility feature coverage describes options intended to make the challenge more adjustable. Xbox Wire lists adaptive difficulty and Auto Assist, Auto Evade, Auto Block, and Auto Heal, alongside Auto Movement for platforming. The article also describes a reduced-gore setting, visual highlighting and recoloring, left-handed inverted controls, single-hand play, and full control remapping. Specific availability may vary by platform or build; check the settings on your version. Xbox Wire’s accessibility and difficulty overview
