Its strongest case is craft: the combination of precise platforming and quick, evasive fighting gives the series a convincing 2D revival. Its main question is whether polished fundamentals are enough to make it feel genuinely new.
Is Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound worth playing?
For players who want a tightly focused action platformer, Ragebound looks compelling. Its design emphasizes momentum: moving between ground, walls and air, then linking attacks with evasions. The developers described that flow as a deliberate pursuit of precision and momentum in a PlayStation Blog account. That is the intended design, not a substitute for a player’s own experience, but it gives the game a clear standard to meet.

Reviewers found that the fundamentals land, while differing in how much they value the result. GamesRadar+ praised the blend of precise 2D platforming and fast combat associated with the modern 3D entries. PC Gamer reviewer Abbie Stone called it “A fun revival that opts for solid fundamentals over innovation” in a review published July 30, 2025. That is a useful distinction: the appeal is more about execution than a radical reinvention of the series.

How does Ragebound play?
Movement and combat
The game’s central promise is a connected rhythm of traversal and fighting rather than platforming and combat as separate chores. Players control Kenji Mozu and Kumori, whose Ninja Fusion abilities are part of the game’s combat design. The Steam description presents them as a duo with complementary abilities; the developers have also emphasized attacks chained with evasions and movement across surfaces.

- Includes soundtrack and booklet!
- A new twist to the side-scrolling NINJA GAIDEN series experience
- Dive into an untold chapter of the NINJA GAIDEN saga
- Old school gameplay with a brand-new polish
- A spectacular pixel art showdown
For action-platformer fans, responsiveness matters as much as speed. A fast game can feel arbitrary if movement, enemy tells and attack timing do not read clearly. In assessing Ragebound, the key question is whether each dodge or jump feels like a player decision with an understandable payoff, rather than simply a rush of effects. The available reviews support the game’s precision and pace as strengths, but do not establish that every player will find its flow equally intuitive.
Enemy patterns, difficulty and retries
GamesRadar+ reports that bosses become more manageable once their patterns are learned, and describes checkpoints as generous. PC Gamer likewise considers the game more accessible than earlier Ninja Gaiden titles, while noting that it can still become punishing. Together, those assessments suggest a challenge built around observation and repetition, but with retries that reduce the cost of learning.
That makes Ragebound a plausible entry point for players curious about the series but wary of its reputation for difficulty. It is not described as effortless: expect to learn enemy behavior and adjust to demanding encounters. A harder mode unlocks after completion, according to GamesRadar+, giving players who finish the campaign an additional challenge.

What is the story and setting?
The story begins while Ryu Hayabusa is away from his village. Kenji Mozu, a young ninja trained by Ryu, joins forces with Kumori, an assassin from the Black Spider Clan, when demons threaten Hayabusa Village. The publisher frames the game as an untold chapter that combines classic-era lore and gameplay with elements of the modern 3D entries.
That premise gives the game a way to connect its side-scrolling form to the broader series without making Ryu the only focus. The playable partnership and Ninja Fusion abilities are the more immediate mechanical expression of that setup.
How does the pixel-art presentation hold up?
The developers chose detailed pixel art to connect the series’ roots with The Game Kitchen’s previous work. They also described brighter colors and clean forms inspired by 1990s anime in a PlayStation Blog discussion. Those are the creators’ stated intentions; whether the look works for an individual player is a matter of taste.

Visually, that direction gives Ragebound a distinct identity from the series’ 3D entries while preserving a recognizable ninja-action mood. The important practical test for this style is legibility: fast movement and busy combat need animation and silhouettes that let players read what is happening. The game’s pixel-art approach is therefore not just a nostalgic choice; it has to serve the same clarity that its precision-focused combat demands.

Yes. Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound is a side-scrolling entry developed by The Game Kitchen and published by Dotemu. It translates the series into 2D platforming and combat while drawing on both classic-era material and aspects of the modern 3D games. It is a new chapter rather than simply a remaster of an older side-scroller.
