ninput.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system DLL used by the Windows Interaction Context API for pointer, touch, gesture, manipulation, and pen-related input. If ninput.dll is missing, corrupt, or will not load, repair Windows first rather than downloading a replacement from a DLL website.
What ninput.dll does
Microsoft documents Ninput.dll as the DLL that implements the Windows Interaction Context API. Applications can use this Windows input stack to process pointer and touch interactions, gestures, manipulation, and pen input.

The file is not a DirectX, XInput, Visual C++, or .NET runtime. The description “Microsoft Pen and Touch Input Component” is file metadata, not the name of a separate program that you can download and install.
On 64-bit Windows, the normal locations are:
- 64-bit copy:
C:WindowsSystem32ninput.dll - 32-bit copy used by 32-bit applications:
C:WindowsSysWOW64ninput.dll
The names can be confusing: System32 contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains redirected 32-bit components. Windows manages this separation through WOW64. Do not copy a file between these folders based only on its filename.

What the error means
You may see one of these messages:
ninput.dll was not foundninput.dll is missingninput.dll could not be locatedninput.dll could not be loaded- “This application has failed to start because ninput.dll was not found”
- “ninput.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error”
A missing or not-found message usually means Windows or the application could not find a usable copy. “Could not be loaded” can also indicate the wrong architecture, a damaged file, a blocked file, or a conflicting copy in the application folder.
The “not designed to run on Windows” wording is a Bad Image error. Microsoft associates the standard invalid-image condition with 0xC000007B, which generally means the file format is invalid or incompatible. It does not automatically mean that reinstalling a runtime will fix the problem.
Before changing anything, note the exact application named in the message and, if shown, the full path of the file Windows tried to load.

1. Restart and install pending Windows updates
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes
A failed update or partially serviced Windows component can cause a system DLL error. Start with the least disruptive repair.
- Save your work and restart Windows.
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Start the application again.
If the error began immediately after a Windows update, check whether another update is waiting. On supported Windows 11 installations, you can also use the repair reinstall feature:
- Open Start > Settings > System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. If the option is unavailable, use System Restore or another supported recovery option later in this guide.
2. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes
This is the most important fix when the file is genuinely missing or damaged. DISM repairs the Windows component store, then System File Checker uses that repaired source to replace protected system files.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait until DISM completes. Do not close the window just because progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait for verification to reach 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Microsoft recommends this order because DISM supplies the repair source for SFC.
If SFC says it repaired corrupted files, restart before testing. If it reports that it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and run SFC a second time. If DISM itself fails, Windows Update or the component store may be damaged. Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess; use that advanced procedure only with installation media matching the installed Windows version and edition.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed is inefficient when you are troubleshooting several possible causes. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the condition causing the repair problem; its free scan shows what it found, while repair actions are performed by the full version. It is optional, and Windows’ own DISM and SFC remain the appropriate first repair tools.
3. Check the file path and Microsoft signature
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
The filename alone does not prove that a DLL is authentic. Windows can search an application’s folder before or alongside system locations, allowing a damaged or malicious application-local DLL to interfere with loading.

To check the normal Windows copy:
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter
%WINDIR%System32in the address bar. - Search for
ninput.dll. - On 64-bit Windows, also check
%WINDIR%SysWOW64. - Right-click the file and choose Properties.
- Review the Digital Signatures tab if present.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
A legitimate system copy should be in the expected Windows directory and have a valid Microsoft signature. A copy in an application’s installation folder is not automatically malicious, but it requires closer examination. A file found directly in C:Windows, an unusual temporary folder, or a random application directory should be scanned before you allow the program to run.
Do not delete every copy you find. First record the path named in the error and determine which executable is loading it.
4. Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
Antivirus software may quarantine a real system file after a detection or file-system problem.
- Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
ninput.dll. - Expand the entry and review its path, threat details, and status.
Restore a quarantined file only if it is in the expected Windows directory and its Microsoft signature is valid. Do not restore a file from an unusual application folder merely because the filename matches. Microsoft notes that Defender may detect a restored file again unless you explicitly allow it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRun a Quick scan afterward. If the path or signature is suspicious, use a Full scan or Microsoft Defender Offline scan instead of restoring the file.
5. Repair or reinstall only the affected application
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes, plus download time
If Windows itself works normally and only one game or application reports the error, the problem may be application-local rather than a missing Windows component.
- Write down the exact application named in the error.
- Open that program’s launcher or installer.
- Use its Repair, Verify files, or equivalent option.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the program.
If there is no repair option:
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application developer’s official source or launcher.
- Install the current version.
- Test it before adding unofficial patches or DLL files.
Reinstalling the application is especially important if the error points to a copy beside the application executable. Windows DLL search behavior includes the application directory, so an incompatible or malicious local file can override the expected system component.
Do not assume that a named game, launcher, or runtime is responsible unless that program is actually shown in your error. No particular commercial application is established as the universal cause of ninput.dll errors.

Time needed: 5 to 20 minutes
A 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit process cannot use a 32-bit DLL in place of its required system component.
On 64-bit Windows:
System32is the normal location for the 64-bit copy.SysWOW64is used for 32-bit Windows applications.- WOW64 normally redirects 32-bit applications to the appropriate system files.
If only an older 32-bit program fails, repair or reinstall that program and verify that Windows is intact. Do not solve an architecture problem by downloading a similarly named file or copying one from another PC.

If the error appears across several programs, return to DISM and SFC rather than treating each application separately.
7. Update drivers only when the symptoms point to input hardware
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
A display, touch, pen, or pointing-device driver can cause input problems, but a driver update is not a substitute for repairing a missing system DLL.
To check relevant drivers:
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Human Interface Devices, Mice and other pointing devices, and, where relevant, Display adapters.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
You can also open the device’s Properties > Driver tab to review its status and use Roll Back Driver if the problem began immediately after a driver change. Do not uninstall an input device unless you have a recovery plan and Windows can rediscover it.
Manually hunting through dozens of driver versions is tedious and can introduce the wrong package. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan identifies the results, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace Windows repair or the affected application’s official reinstall.
8. Use System Restore or a repair installation
Time needed: 20 minutes to several hours
Use recovery tools when the problem clearly began after a system change and normal servicing did not help.
For System Restore:
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Confirm and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not normally remove personal files, but it can roll back applications, drivers, and system settings.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If DISM and SFC cannot restore the component, use Windows’ supported repair-reinstall options. Back up important files first. A clean installation should be a last resort, after repair installation and recovery options have been considered.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
Do not run this as a generic DLL fix:
regsvr32 ninput.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly associated with COM or ActiveX components. ninput.dll is an operating-system API implementation DLL, not a normal registerable component. The command may produce an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found.
Use DISM, SFC, Windows Update, or application repair instead.

Common causes and the correct response
| Likely cause | Best response |
|---|---|
| Deleted or damaged Windows component | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Failed Windows update | Install updates again or use Windows Update repair reinstall |
| Antivirus quarantine | Check Protection history and verify path and signature |
| Wrong architecture | Repair Windows or reinstall the affected application |
| Damaged application installation | Verify files or reinstall from the official source |
| Application-folder DLL hijacking | Scan the file and inspect the loading path |
| Disk or broader system damage | Check disk health, scan offline, and use recovery options |
A file named ninput.dll outside the expected system directories is not automatically malware, but it should be verified. Malware research has documented malicious implants reusing this filename, so location, signature, and scan results matter.
FAQ
Is ninput.dll part of Windows?
Yes. It is a Microsoft Windows system DLL associated with the Interaction Context input API.
Recommended Free Tools
Is Microsoft Pen and Touch Input Component a separate program?
No. That wording is a file description or metadata label, not a separate redistributable application.
Is ninput.dll part of DirectX or Visual C++?
There is no evidence that it is. Do not install those runtimes solely because this filename appears in an error.
Should I place ninput.dll in System32?
No. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC. Manually copying a DLL can create architecture, version, signature, and dependency problems.
What if SFC says it repaired the file but the error remains?
Restart first, then repair or verify the affected application. Recheck the exact path in the error for a second copy shadowing the Windows copy. If SFC reports no violations, investigate the application, architecture, dependencies, and antivirus history instead.
Does Windows Features or Device Manager reinstall ninput.dll?
Normally, no. Windows Features manages optional Windows components, while Device Manager manages hardware drivers. Neither is the standard repair route for this system DLL.
Can I use System Restore?
Yes, when the error began after a recognizable update, driver installation, cleanup operation, or other system change. Choose a restore point from before the failure and review what will be rolled back.
