Nintendo lowered its forecast for original Switch hardware sales in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025, from 12.5 million consoles to 11 million. The cut came as the company reported lower sales and profit for the nine months ended December 31, 2024—not for the December quarter alone.
What Nintendo reported for April–December 2024
Nintendo Co., Ltd.’s nine-month FY2025 results showed net sales of ¥956.218 billion, down about 31% year over year. Profit attributable to owners was ¥237.189 billion, down about 42%. These are totals for the nine months from April through December 2024, not results for a single quarter. Nintendo’s FY2025 nine-month earnings release provides the figures.

For the original Switch, Nintendo reported 9.54 million hardware units sold in the same nine-month period. Switch software sales were 108.91 million units, down 24.4% year over year. Nintendo described the console as being in its eighth year and said, “Even so, sales remained steady for a platform in its eighth year.”

Nintendo reduced its full-year original Switch hardware sales forecast by 1.5 million units, from 12.5 million to 11 million, for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025. The 9.54 million hardware units already sold were a nine-month actual; 11 million was a full-year forecast, not a final sales total.

The forecast change signaled that Nintendo expected to sell fewer original Switch consoles over the full fiscal year than it had previously projected. Nintendo’s release presents its outlook as a forecast, not a guarantee: it is based on management assumptions and available information, and actual results may differ materially. The company specifically cites risks including foreign-exchange fluctuations and changes in the market environment.
What “revenues fall again” means
The headline refers to the year-over-year decline in Nintendo’s reported net sales for the nine-month period. Net sales, operating profit, and profit attributable to owners are separate measures; the ¥237.189 billion figure is profit attributable to owners, not revenue. The official release reports that measure alongside net sales and says it fell about 42% year over year.

- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
The figures establish a broad decline in the period’s sales and profit, alongside lower Switch hardware and software sales. They do not, by themselves, prove that the hardware forecast cut caused the company-wide decline or identify a single cause for it.
What later results show—and do not show
The February 4, 2025 story is historical, not a report on Nintendo’s current quarter. In results published in August 2026, Nintendo reported FY2027 first-quarter net sales of ¥517.8 billion for April–June 2026, down 9.5% year over year, while profit attributable to owners rose 53.5% to ¥147.4 billion. Nintendo said its full-year forecast, published May 8, 2026, was unchanged. The FY2027 first-quarter release and an Associated Press report from August 2026 describe that later, mixed pattern: quarterly sales fell while profit increased.

Those later figures do not establish whether the original Switch is available now, and they should not be conflated with Switch 2 hardware. The 2025 forecast concerned original Switch consoles only.
