Nintendo postponed the planned April 9, 2025, start of Switch 2 preorders in the United States while it assessed the potential effects of tariffs and changing market conditions. Canada’s April 9 preorder plan was delayed to match U.S. timing. Nintendo later set retail preorders for April 24 in both countries, while keeping the June 5, 2025, launch date.
Why Nintendo delayed Switch 2 preorders
On April 4, Nintendo said U.S. preorders would not begin as planned on April 9. Its stated reason was to assess “the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions,” according to MobileSyrup’s report. Nintendo did not identify a specific tariff cost or quantify how tariffs might affect the console.

What the announcements do—and do not—establish
The delay was linked by Nintendo to assessing possible tariff effects and evolving market conditions, but the cited announcements do not provide a tariff-cost estimate, an inventory figure, or a count of affected customers. They also do not establish current prices, stock, or availability at any individual retailer. Nintendo’s U.S. update apologized for the retail preorder delay and said it hoped the revised timing would reduce uncertainty for customers.
