Nintendo chose Princess Zelda as the hero of The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom because the game’s central mechanic worked better without Link’s sword and shield. The developers wanted players to solve problems with echoes—copies of objects and creatures—rather than bypass the new system with familiar weapons. Zelda fit that design, and mysterious rifts threatening Hyrule gave her a reason to leave the castle and set out on her own.
Why did Nintendo choose Zelda instead of Link?
The choice grew out of the game’s mechanics, not a long-standing internal plan to make Zelda the lead. In Nintendo’s developer interview published September 23, 2024, producer Eiji Aonuma said the team initially considered Link as the protagonist. But when Link copied objects into the game world, his sword and shield risked making the new powers optional: players could simply fight instead of relying on echoes.

Developer Satoshi Terada said the team also considered giving Link echoes first and sword-and-shield abilities later. They worried, however, that once players received those weapons they would stop using echoes. The two approaches did not work well together, so the developers kept echoes at the center of the experience.
That led Aonuma to a character who did not normally fight with sword and shield. As he put it in Nintendo’s interview: “If that’s the case, it must be someone who doesn’t fight with a sword and shield, right? Who in the series would be a good fit for these powers and bring their insight to them? Well, that would have to be Princess Zelda.”

How do echoes make Zelda the hero?
Zelda’s main tool is the Tri Rod, which lets her create echoes: reusable imitations of things she encounters. She can turn an object or creature into a tool for traversal, puzzle-solving, or combat. Nintendo’s feature page gives examples including stacking water blocks to reach higher places, laying beds as bridges, throwing rocks at enemies, and summoning monster echoes to fight alongside her.
The mechanic changes the usual action-hero approach. Instead of relying primarily on a sword to overcome obstacles, Zelda adapts the world around her. Nintendo’s feature page also describes binding objects and monsters, reversing their movement, and activities such as dungeons, quests, minigames, accessories, and Smoothie Shops.

Does Zelda ever use a sword?
Yes. Zelda can take on a swordfighter form, preserving a limited stretch of sword-and-shield gameplay. Aonuma said the team still wanted that style of play and imagined Zelda imitating Link’s abilities. Nintendo’s announcement identifies the form as part of the game alongside the Still World. It supplements the echo-based design rather than replacing it as Zelda’s defining way to play.
What gives Zelda a reason to leave the castle?
The developers also needed a story reason for a royal character to take action when other people could fight ordinary monsters. Aonuma said ordinary enemies were not enough to justify Zelda’s journey. The team instead created mysterious rifts that change and threaten Hyrule, swallowing people and things into the Still World. The king and Link are among those who disappear, leaving Zelda to confront the crisis.
That danger shapes the adventure’s perspective. Aonuma said, “But this time, Princess Zelda is on her own adventure, so the story takes on a different perspective than before.” Nintendo’s September 2, 2024 announcement introduced the Still World and Zelda’s swordfighter form.
Did fan requests lead to the decision?
Aonuma recalled that people had asked for years, “Will Princess Zelda ever be the protagonist?” and said, “I’d like to play as Princess Zelda.” He also said he wanted an opportunity that made sense for her and did justice to her character. When the team struggled to find the right protagonist for this game, he saw that as an opportunity.

- Save the kingdom of Hyrule, this time with the wisdom of Princess Zelda! The people of Hyrule are being swallowed by strange crevices that have arisen, with a certain swordsman among the missing. Now it's up to Princess Zelda to save her kingdom in a new story from The Legend of Zelda !
- Team up with Tri and use the power of Tri's scepter to create "echoes", which are copies of objects found in the environment. Then recreate these echoes whenever you want to solve puzzles and defeat enemies.
- Create echoes like blocks of water to reach new heights, bridge old beds, throw rocks at enemies, or find your own creative combination of echoes to do everything your own way. You can even create monster echoes to fight alongside you in combat!
That makes fan interest part of Aonuma’s explanation, but it does not establish that fan demand caused the design decision: Nintendo did not provide a survey or quantify those requests. The developers’ account ties the choice most directly to the way Link’s weapons could undermine the echo mechanic.

Nintendo describes Echoes of Wisdom as the first time in the series that Zelda is the protagonist of her own adventure. That is Nintendo’s series-level claim; it should not be broadened into a claim about every spin-off or every game carrying the Zelda name. The important distinction is that this story places Zelda at the center of her own adventure, rather than treating her only as a character Link must rescue.
What does the game say about Zelda lore?
Aonuma said, “We had no intention of establishing any new theories in the series’ lore.” That states the developers’ intent; it does not mean the game has no relationship to the wider Zelda lore. Aonuma also described finding Link as one of the themes for Zelda in this game. Her hood began as part of Link’s outfit, and she wears it as she sets out secretly; the developers thought it would be touching for her to inherit it.
