Nintendo forecast 15 million Switch 2 hardware sales for the fiscal year that ended March 31, 2026. Ahead of the console’s June 5, 2025 launch, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said the target was intended to match the original Switch’s sales over roughly its first 10 months. Best Buy separately planned limited late-night launch sales and preorder pickups at nearly all its U.S. stores.
What was Nintendo’s Switch 2 sales forecast?
In its May 8, 2025 financial results, Nintendo forecast 15 million Switch 2 hardware units for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026. That was a company forecast—not a reported final sales total. Nintendo said its outlook depended on management assumptions and market conditions. It assumed U.S. tariff rates effective April 10, 2025 would remain in place through the fiscal year, and warned that changes could affect the forecast. Nintendo’s May 8, 2025 financial results also set June 5, 2025 as the console’s release date.

Why did Nintendo set a 15 million target?
In a May 14, 2025 report on a conference-call Q&A, HotHardware quoted Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa saying the target aimed to match the original Switch’s sales over roughly the 10 months from its March 2017 launch through December that year. Furukawa also acknowledged that Switch 2 was priced relatively high compared with Switch, which he said presented challenges for early adoption. These were Furukawa’s reported explanations, not an independent forecast or sales analysis. HotHardware’s report linked to a Nintendo Q&A summary.
What did Nintendo report after launch?
On June 11, 2025, Nintendo said Switch 2 had sold more than 3.5 million units worldwide in its first four days after release. Nintendo described this as the highest global first-four-day sales level for any Nintendo hardware at that time. The figure covers a launch window, not the full fiscal year, so it cannot be treated as the result for the 15 million-unit forecast. Nintendo’s June 11, 2025 release reported the early sales figure.

What were Best Buy’s Switch 2 launch-night plans?
Best Buy announced on May 29, 2025 that nearly all its U.S. stores would open at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time on June 5 for preorder pickups and limited walk-in purchases of consoles, games, and accessories. The announcement described a U.S. event; it does not establish that the same arrangement applied outside the country. Best Buy’s announcement also said customers who bought or picked up a console in-store during the event had a chance to receive a limited-edition commemorative coin while supplies lasted.
Preorder pickup and walk-in stock
Preorder pickup was for customers collecting an existing order. Walk-in purchases were a separate, limited-stock opportunity; the announcement did not promise that every store would have consoles available for every person who arrived. The planned opening time was 12:01 a.m. ET, so local timing varied by time zone.

Separate summer events
Best Buy also mentioned GameTruck events during the summer. Those were separate from the June 5 overnight store openings, not an extension of launch-night access or inventory.
