But the contemporary report did not confirm who sent every notice, so the headline’s implication that Nintendo itself blocked those specific videos is not established. Nintendo’s current published guidelines do explicitly identify demonstrations of software or devices that circumvent its security measures, including emulators, as content that may fall outside its rules.
What happened to the Steam Deck emulation videos?
On March 3, 2022, Nintendo Life reported that videos showing Yuzu, a Switch emulator, and Dolphin, which supports GameCube and Wii games, running on Steam Deck had become targets for takedowns on YouTube. The report highlighted a The Phawx tutorial about getting Yuzu running and said the creator’s Dolphin video was also reportedly targeted. It also said it was unclear who was issuing the requests at the time. Nintendo Life’s report described Nintendo as an obvious guess, but that was an inference—not confirmation of the claimant behind each notice.
On July 7, 2022, Linus Tech Tips published a video titled “Take down this video, Nintendo. I dare you. – Switch games on Steam Deck”. Its description referred to reports of takedowns and said the video would demonstrate Switch games on Steam Deck. The title and creator’s framing do not independently establish who filed the earlier notices.
What Nintendo’s video guidelines say
Nintendo’s Game Content Guidelines for Online Video & Image Sharing Platforms apply to platforms including YouTube and Twitch, and cover uploads as well as livestreams. The guidelines were updated September 2, 2024. Nintendo encourages creators to add their own creative input and commentary, stating: “We encourage you to create videos that include your creative input and commentary.”

The same guidelines list as a possible policy violation content that “shows how to use software and/or devices that circumvent security measures deployed by Nintendo to protect against infringement of its video games and console systems, such as emulators and/or other circumvention software.” Nintendo also says: “Yes, we reserve the right to remove any content that we believe is unlawful, infringing, inappropriate, or not in line with these Guidelines.” It notes that it may take down videos on behalf of third-party partners.
These are Nintendo’s published platform-content rules and stated enforcement position. They do not establish that Nintendo filed each 2022 request, nor do they amount to a court ruling on every emulator, video, or use of one.

Emulators, game footage, and game files are different issues
“Emulation” can refer to several separate things: the emulator software itself, footage or other copyrighted game content shown in a video, and the game files used to run a title. The sources relevant to this story do not support a blanket conclusion that all emulation or every video about emulation is lawful or unlawful.
- Emulator software: Nintendo’s guidelines identify demonstrations of software or devices that circumvent its security measures, including emulators, as an example of content that may fall outside its video-sharing policy.
- Video content: Nintendo’s rules cover what creators upload or livestream. Whether a particular video complies depends on its content and Nintendo’s stated guidelines; the March 2022 reporting does not identify the claimant for every notice.
- Game files: Nintendo of America’s Intellectual Property & Piracy FAQ defines piracy as illegal copying, downloading, or distribution of game products. Nintendo says it does not authorize products that let users play or download Nintendo game files on personal computers. Those statements describe Nintendo’s position, not a ruling about every implementation or individual use.
Nintendo’s U.S. reporting page accepts reports about categories including ROM sites and emulators. Nintendo UK’s emulator information likewise presents Nintendo’s view that some unauthorized emulators harm the industry and that some circumvent game security. These policy pages should not be read as a universal legal determination about all emulation.

How the later GitHub notice fits—and how it does not
On June 30, 2026, Nintendo submitted a separate DMCA notice concerning specified Switch-emulator repositories on GitHub. In that notice, Nintendo asserted that the repositories enabled circumvention of technological protection measures used by Switch. This is recent evidence of Nintendo’s enforcement position, but it concerns source-code repositories and Nintendo’s allegations about them—not the YouTube videos reported in 2022. The two episodes should not be treated as proof of one another.

The Steam Deck was the hardware at the center of the 2022 reports. A Nintendo Switch is a contextual alternative for playing Nintendo games, but using Nintendo hardware does not answer whether a particular video complies with a platform’s rules or whether a specific upload may receive a complaint. This story is about video moderation and Nintendo’s published policies, not a finding that every Steam Deck owner or emulator user has broken the law.
