Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but support is not universal: some titles do not work, and others have limits tied to a game mode, controller, or accessory. Nintendo’s U.S. compatibility chart says its displayed test information is current as of June 5, 2025. For a current answer about a specific game, check its Nintendo product page or Nintendo eShop listing.
Can you play Nintendo Switch games on Nintendo Switch 2?
Yes, if the game is compatible. Nintendo says Switch 2 supports compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but differences in the systems’ hardware mean some games may not be supported or may not work fully. Nintendo advises checking compatibility before buying a Switch game for Switch 2 or buying Switch 2 for a game in an existing library. Nintendo’s U.S. compatibility page explains the scope and lists its test notes.

How current is Nintendo’s compatibility chart?
The U.S. chart dates its displayed test information to June 5, 2025, and directs players to individual game pages or Nintendo eShop for the latest title-level status. Nintendo also says future testing and updates may change how many games are supported. Treat the chart as a dated reference, not a live, exhaustive guarantee that every feature of every listed game works.
Nintendo says it starts games and conducts limited testing, and may change a status if it finds issues. It links separate lists for titles with problems that prevent startup or progress and for issues resolved or planned to be resolved through updates. A status therefore reflects Nintendo’s published guidance, not proof that every mode, accessory, or play situation has been exhaustively tested.

- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch

- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Nintendo Life reported on November 10, 2025, that Nintendo had launched a title-search page for compatibility. Use Nintendo’s own game compatibility lookup for current title searches rather than relying on a launch-era report.
How to check a specific game
- Search Nintendo’s compatibility lookup. Enter the game title or publisher name, then review the result and any stated limitations.
- Check the game’s Nintendo product page or eShop listing. Nintendo directs players there for the latest status, which may be newer than the dated chart.
- Look beyond whether the game starts. Confirm whether the mode you want works, whether it needs original Switch Joy-Con, and whether an older accessory must physically fit the controller or console.
A result that says a game is playable does not necessarily mean every mode works with the controllers and accessories included with Switch 2.

Notable games and feature limitations
Nintendo’s examples show why compatibility is more nuanced than a simple yes-or-no list. These examples describe limits in Nintendo’s published guidance; check the individual game page for a current status.
| Game or software | What to know |
|---|---|
| 1-2-Switch | Some modes use the original right Joy-Con’s IR Motion Camera and require an original Switch right Joy-Con. |
| WarioWare: Move It! | Some games or features using the IR Motion Camera need an original Switch right Joy-Con. |
| Game Builder Garage | Some features using the IR Motion Camera need an original Switch right Joy-Con. |
| Ring Fit Adventure | Joy-Con 2 does not attach to the Ring-Con. Nintendo says original Switch Joy-Con can be used with the Ring-Con. |
| Nintendo Switch Sports | Joy-Con 2 does not fit the Leg Strap, limiting the Soccer/Football Shoot-Out mode described by Nintendo. |
| Everybody 1-2-Switch! | Nintendo says Joy-Con 2’s reduced force-feedback vibration may make the Joy-Con Hide & Seek minigame harder. |
| Nintendo Labo kits | Some Toy-Con accessories cannot accommodate the larger Switch 2 console. The limitation depends on the kit and accessory; do not assume all Labo software is unplayable. |
Nintendo’s U.S. guidance dated June 5, 2025, also lists Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit and the Niconico, ABEMA, Hulu, Crunchyroll, and InkyPen apps among software that cannot be used on Switch 2. Verify a title on its current Nintendo page because that list’s stated information date is not current-status confirmation.

Using original Switch Joy-Con on Switch 2
Original Switch Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, which can help with games or modes that depend on their IR Motion Camera or on fitting older accessories. They cannot attach to Switch 2, so they cannot charge while connected to the console. Nintendo says to charge them with a Switch console or a suitable accessory, such as a Joy-Con charging grip or two-way charging stand. See Nintendo’s compatibility overview for controller guidance.
This is a targeted workaround, not a universal fix: original Joy-Con can address specific controller-dependent limits, but they will not resolve software compatibility problems or make an incompatible accessory fit Switch 2.
Do other original Switch accessories work?
Nintendo lists accessory compatibility separately from game compatibility. Original Joy-Con and the original Switch Pro Controller can pair wirelessly, but the original Switch dock and several other Switch accessories are incompatible with Switch 2. Check Nintendo’s accessory compatibility guidance for the particular item instead of assuming that an accessory works because a game does.
