Nintendo UK Support lists 13 examples of improper handling that can damage a Switch console, Joy-Con controllers or game cards. It does not rank them or say how often they happen, so these are listed risks—not a measured list of the “most common” causes. The practical pattern is clear: avoid pressure and impacts, keep moisture away, and handle connectors and controllers gently.
Damage during storage and transport
1. Dropping the console on a hard surface
A fall can damage the screen, controls or internal parts. Buttons or control sticks may stop working even when the exterior looks fine. Handle the console carefully and avoid impacts.
2. Leaving it on a sofa or chair
Someone may sit on a console left on a seat. The resulting pressure can damage controls, rails or the screen, or deform the device. Put it somewhere safe after playing.
3. Packing it into an overly full bag
Items pressing against the console can damage its controls, touch screen or shell. Leave space around it or use a carrying case; pressure from leaning against a backpack can also affect what is inside. Nintendo UK Support says a separately sold carrying case is a good idea for carrying the console, but it is not a guarantee against every kind of damage.

Damage from connections and Joy-Con handling
4. Using an incompatible cable or forcing a connection
An unsuitable cable, or force when inserting or removing one, can damage a connector or port, including the USB Type-C port. Use an appropriate cable and connect it carefully. Avoid tripping over a connected cable, which can strain both the cord and connector.
5. Forcing Joy-Con on or off the console
Forcing a controller can loosen its locking mechanism or damage the rail. To detach a Joy-Con, hold its release button; to attach one, guide it slowly along the rail rather than pushing or pulling with force.

Damage from temperature, water and humidity
6. Exposing the console to sudden temperature changes
A rapid change in temperature can cause condensation. Nintendo warns that this moisture may lead to failures in the console, Joy-Con or dock. If droplets appear, power off the console, wipe it with a dry cloth and leave it in a warm room until the droplets disappear.
7. Leaving a battery uncharged for a long time
Nintendo says the built-in battery may fail if it is not charged or used for a long time, and lists rechargeable-battery deterioration among repair issues. Its guidance is to charge the console at least once every six months.

8. Exposing the console to water or high humidity
A leaking bottle or spilled drink can wet internal parts, as can exposure to a high-humidity source such as a humidifier. Nintendo Support advises keeping the console away from water and high humidity.
9. Handling the console with wet hands
Moisture can reach internal parts even if the outside appears dry. Dry your hands before handling the console.

Damage to game cards and the card slot
10. Touching a game card’s connector
Repeatedly touching the card’s gold-and-green connector area can interfere with its operation. Hold game cards by their edges instead.
11. Putting objects into the game-card slot
A cotton swab or a game card with a broken connector can catch on and damage the slot connector. Do not put cleaning swabs into the slot or touch its interior.

Damage involving pets and motion play
12. Leaving the console or controllers where pets can reach them
Drool can damage the device; Nintendo also lists damaged controls and broken internal parts among possible repair issues. Keep the console and controllers out of pets’ reach.
13. Playing motion games without a secured Joy-Con strap or enough room
A detached Joy-Con can be damaged during movement if it is not secured or there is not enough space around the player. Follow the game’s instructions, put the wrist strap on and adjust its lock, and clear adequate space before playing.
