The announcement applied to those three official shops—not every Japanese retailer—and did not say whether games were affected.
What Nintendo announced
The announcement covered in-store sales of Switch 2 hardware and related accessories at Nintendo’s three named official shops. ITmedia reported the statement from Nintendo’s official shop account on June 4; the quoted phrase “for the time being” is a translation of the Japanese wording, not an English-language Nintendo statement. Nintendo did not specify why it was pausing those sales, when they might resume, or whether the restriction covered games. The report does not establish that Nintendo removed previously available products from shelves, only that the shops would not sell the hardware and related accessories in-store.
Why did Nintendo pause sales?
The June 4 announcement, as reported, gave no explanation. Nintendo had said in April that applications to its My Nintendo Store lottery for launch delivery substantially exceeded expectations and the number of units it could deliver by launch day. That provides context for intense demand, but Nintendo did not identify it as the reason for the three shops’ in-store policy. ITmedia Mobile

A note for buyers considering the Japanese-language system
The Japanese-language Switch 2 system announced for launch was Japan-specific: Nintendo’s product page says Japanese is its only system language and that only Nintendo Accounts set to Japan as their country or region can be linked. This is a separate product limitation, not an explanation for the shops’ sales pause. Nintendo’s Japan-only system page
