Nintendo has defended the Switch 2’s price as appropriate for the experience, while saying it is watching whether cost becomes a barrier. The comment came from Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa at the company’s 2025 shareholder meeting—not as a blanket response to every fan complaint. In the United States, Nintendo’s MSRP is now $499.99, effective September 1, 2026, up from the $449.99 launch price.

What did Nintendo say about the Switch 2’s price?

At Nintendo’s 85th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders in 2025, a shareholder raised concerns about the system’s higher price and access for children. In response, Nintendo Co., Ltd. President Shuntaro Furukawa said: “We believe the pricing of Nintendo Switch 2 is appropriate for the gaming experience it offers, and what is most important is to provide entertaining experiences that demonstrate the value to consumers.” He added: “We are closely monitoring to what degree the price of the system might become a barrier.” Nintendo’s English AGM Q&A summary records both remarks.

That is a defense of Nintendo’s pricing rationale paired with an acknowledgment that affordability matters. It is not a direct apology for the price, nor evidence that Nintendo agreed to lower it. The comments addressed a shareholder’s question; they should not be read as a response to every customer’s reason for criticizing the console.

How much does the Nintendo Switch 2 cost in the U.S. now?

Nintendo of America’s U.S. MSRP for the console is $499.99, effective September 1, 2026. Nintendo said the revision from $449.99 reflects market conditions it expects to continue over the medium to long term. The $449.99 figure was the U.S. launch MSRP announced in 2025, not the current MSRP. See Nintendo of America’s price revision announcement and Nintendo’s April 2, 2025 launch announcement.

U.S. price point Amount What it means
Current console MSRP $499.99 Nintendo of America MSRP effective September 1, 2026; retailer prices and stock may differ.
Launch console MSRP $449.99 U.S. launch MSRP announced in 2025; a historical price, not the current MSRP.

Those figures compare the console’s stated U.S. MSRP at launch and after the revision. They do not establish the price at every retailer or in other countries. If deciding whether to buy now or wait, compare the actual local price and stock with the current MSRP; the launch price is useful context, not a guaranteed future discount. A Mario Kart World bundle may also be available in some markets, but its price and availability are not established by these U.S. MSRP figures.

Why were some customers frustrated during the launch period?

Two separate issues appear in Nintendo’s shareholder Q&A and contemporaneous U.S. reporting: limited supply and friction in the preorder process. They help explain documented complaints, but neither establishes how widely fans opposed the system or its price.

High demand and limited supply

Furukawa told shareholders that demand was exceeding supply in many countries and apologized for the inconvenience. Nintendo reported that its Japanese My Nintendo Store purchase lottery had received over 2.2 million applications by April 23, 2025; Furukawa acknowledged that many applicants would not be selected and said Nintendo would strengthen production and supply. The application count is Nintendo’s figure for that lottery, not a measure of global demand or customer dissatisfaction. The details appear in the AGM Q&A summary.

Preorder delays and sold-out listings

The Associated Press reported U.S. preorder delays, listings that sold out quickly, and order problems in April 2025. Nintendo acknowledged very high demand. These were reported incidents during the preorder period, not evidence that fans generally rejected the console. The Associated Press’s April 24, 2025 report describes the ordering difficulties.

What is the Switch 2, and what should buyers know about compatibility?

The Switch 2 launched June 5, 2025. Nintendo’s launch announcement describes a 7.9-inch screen, GameChat, magnetic Joy-Con 2 controllers, and compatibility with compatible original Nintendo Switch games. Expanded game storage uses microSD Express cards, not conventional microSD cards.

  • Some original Switch games may not be supported or fully compatible.
  • Original Switch Joy-Con controllers can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but many original accessories are incompatible.
  • Conventional microSD cards cannot be used for game storage on Switch 2; Nintendo specifies microSD Express for expanded storage.

Check Nintendo’s Switch and Switch 2 compatibility page for the status of a specific game or accessory before relying on it.
