Nintendo Should Add Wii to Switch Online for These 12 Classic Games

A Wii collection is not announced, but these 12 games show why Nintendo Switch Online could benefit from a curated library of Wii classics.

Nintendo should add a Wii collection to Nintendo Switch Online—not because a revival has been announced, but because these twelve games would give the service a distinctive mix of motion-controlled adventures, local multiplayer, and hard-to-replace curiosities. The case is strongest when a game is still awkward to access or has no Switch release; a title that already has a modern version is a weaker reason to add it.

Will Wii games come to Nintendo Switch Online?

There is no announced Wii collection. Nintendo Support says Nintendo Classics will continue to grow, but “There is no set schedule for new releases.” That is a statement about the collections generally, not a promise that Wii games are coming. Nintendo’s current catalog lists NES, Super NES, Game Boy, Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, Virtual Boy, and GameCube collections; it does not list Wii. Nintendo’s Classics FAQ and its regional library page are the places to check for current availability.

Access to the classic-game collections requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, and the collections depend on membership tier. Nintendo says the base tier includes NES, Super NES, and Game Boy; the Expansion Pack adds Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, Virtual Boy, and GameCube. Nintendo says GameCube Classics is exclusive to Switch 2. Check the Nintendo page for your region for current plan details and availability.

A Wii library would answer a real access problem. Nintendo Support records January 30, 2019 as the last day software could be purchased through the Wii Shop Channel. The Wii U eShop stopped accepting purchases on March 27, 2023; Nintendo’s FAQ said redownloads and updates would remain available for the foreseeable future, which is not the same as being able to buy new games. A subscription collection would not recreate either store, but it could make a carefully chosen set of Wii-era games easier to play on current hardware.

Which Wii games should Nintendo bring back?

The strongest twelve-game case is not a list of twelve famous names. It should cover different kinds of play, favor games whose controls can be translated well, and account for whether a newer release already gives people a practical way to play. These are editorial picks, not confirmed additions. The list also assumes Nintendo would need to secure any rights required for a re-release; not every game is necessarily equally straightforward to license.

1. Wii Sports Resort

A Wii collection needs a game that instantly explains what made the console different. Wii Sports Resort is an ideal motion-control showcase: swordplay, table tennis, archery, and other activities are built around movement rather than a conventional button layout. A Switch version could map those gestures to Joy-Con motion controls and offer button-based alternatives where practical. Its range of short, social activities would also make it a natural fit for a subscription library.

2. Wii Fit Plus

Wii Fit Plus brought exercise routines and balance-focused minigames to a broad audience. A Switch edition could retain the accessible, pick-up-and-play structure while adapting balance-board activities to controls the current hardware supports. It would broaden a Wii collection beyond action games and party play. The original experience depended on a Wii Balance Board for some activities, so a re-release would need to explain which exercises work with the new controls rather than implying a perfect one-to-one conversion.

  • Built-in Wi-Fi Access For Easy Connection To Internet

3. Mario Kart Wii

Mario Kart Wii remains a strong candidate because it combines familiar racing with a distinctive motion-steering option and a large roster of tracks and characters. A modern version could preserve motion steering as an option while making standard controls the straightforward default. Its multiplayer identity suits a service library, but the case is less about filling a gap in the series: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe already gives Switch owners a substantial modern alternative. That makes Mario Kart Wii a welcome historical addition, not an essential way to get a Mario Kart game on Switch.

4. Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Brawl would show a different side of Wii multiplayer: a large crossover fighter with a more deliberate pace than later entries. Its appeal is partly historical, since it represents a particular moment in the series rather than simply another way to play a current release. A reissue would have to address how its controls feel without a GameCube controller or Wii Remote, and any licensed characters and music would make rights clearance a real consideration.

5. Mario Party 8

Mario Party 8’s board-game structure and short minigames are well suited to the stop-and-start rhythm of local play. The Wii Remote’s pointing and motion inputs are the main translation challenge: Nintendo would need to make motion controls optional where possible and avoid leaving standard-controller players behind. A Switch collection could make it a convenient party pick, though the series already has newer entries on the system.

6. WarioWare: Smooth Moves

Smooth Moves turns Wii Remote gestures into rapid-fire comedy. The short microgames make it a good example of a Wii idea that still feels different from a conventional controller game. Joy-Con motion controls could preserve much of that identity, while a re-release would need to account for players using a standard controller or playing in handheld mode. Its unusual control vocabulary is also exactly why a port would need thoughtful adaptation rather than a bare emulator release.

7. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

Skyward Sword built swordplay and aiming around Wii motion controls, so its inclusion would make sense as a showcase of the console’s control experiments. It is not an obvious access-gap pick: an HD version is already available on Switch, giving players a modern way to play the game. That existing release makes the original Wii edition a lower priority than games without a current version, but its place in Wii history still makes it worth considering for a library focused on preservation.

8. Metroid Prime Trilogy

The trilogy brings three first-person adventures together, with the Wii versions known for pointer-based aiming. Pointer controls could translate naturally to Joy-Con, while a traditional dual-stick option would make the games accessible without motion. The collection would offer a substantial single-player counterweight to the party titles. Nintendo would need to consider how it fits alongside other ways to play the series on current hardware, as well as the work involved in supporting both control schemes.

  • Note on Online Features – Support has been discontinued for online play, WiiConnect24, and other internet-based services. All included games function fully offline and do not require internet connectivity.

9. Donkey Kong Country Returns

The Wii original is a demanding side-scrolling platformer that would add a different kind of challenge to the library. But it is not a clear-cut missing game: Donkey Kong Country Returns HD is an HD re-release of the 2010 Wii original, as described by Tom’s Guide. A Wii version could still matter to players interested in the original release, but a subscription slot would be more valuable if it went to a game that is harder to access through a current Switch version.

10. Kirby’s Return to Dream Land

This cooperative platformer would bring approachable local play and a different tone from the more demanding action picks. Its appeal is not just nostalgia: a Wii collection could make it easy for a group to try a classic together without seeking out original hardware. Before choosing the Wii release, Nintendo would need to weigh it against the later Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe on Switch. The original is historically useful, but the newer edition already gives Switch players a practical route to the game’s central adventure.

11. Punch-Out!!

The Wii Punch-Out!! revives a familiar boxing format with timing and pattern recognition at its core. That makes it a strong fit for a retro library: its appeal is easy to understand, and its challenge comes from learning opponents rather than mastering a huge control system. A re-release could offer simple button controls alongside motion options, letting the game work for players who do not want to mimic punches with Joy-Con.

12. Xenoblade Chronicles

The original Xenoblade Chronicles would represent the Wii’s ambitious role-playing games and give the collection a long-form single-player option. It is also a weaker practical-access argument than some other candidates: the game has since been remastered for Switch as Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition. A Wii release would be valuable as an archival version, but Nintendo should prioritize games for which the service would make a bigger difference to access.

Can you play Wii games on Nintendo Switch?

Nintendo’s current Nintendo Classics catalog does not list Wii, so a Wii game should not be assumed to work on Switch through the service. Some Wii games have separate Switch releases, but those are individual ports, remakes, or re-releases—not access to the Wii version as a category. For example, Donkey Kong Country Returns HD provides a modern release of the Wii original, while Skyward Sword HD and Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe offer other routes to games from the era.

For original Wii software that has no current Switch release, the Wii Shop Channel is no longer a source of new purchases. Original Wii hardware and physical discs remain a distinct way to play where a reader already has access to them; that is separate from Nintendo Switch Online. Nintendo’s Wii Shop Channel notice and Wii U and 3DS eShop FAQ explain the purchase closures.

What a good Wii collection would need to get right

  • Controls: Wii Pointer and motion features should be mapped to Joy-Con where they add value, with standard-control options wherever the game can support them.
  • Local play: Party and cooperative games should remain easy to start with nearby players, rather than relying on an awkward reconstruction of Wii-era setup.
  • Selection: Prioritize games without a convenient Switch version, then add a smaller number of historically important games whose newer releases already cover the basics.
  • Licensing: Third-party characters, music, and publishing rights may complicate some re-releases, so a collection should not be treated as a guaranteed roster of every popular Wii game.
  • Membership clarity: Nintendo should identify which plan includes the collection and which hardware supports each game. Its current FAQ says classic-game access requires an active membership and that GameCube Classics is limited to Switch 2; any future Wii offer would need equally clear terms.

The strongest argument for Wii on Switch Online is not that every game should be bundled or that Nintendo has hinted at a launch. It is that a curated library could bring motion-led party games, distinctive experiments, and harder-to-access releases to current hardware—while making clear when a modern Switch version is already the better practical option.
