Nintendo sold 19.86 million Switch 2 consoles in the fiscal year that ended March 31, 2026, exceeding both its initial 15 million forecast and its revised 19 million target. For the next fiscal year, ending March 31, 2027, Nintendo forecasts 16.50 million hardware sales—a 16.9% year-over-year decline, not a reported result.
How many Switch 2 consoles did Nintendo sell in its first year?
Nintendo reported 19.86 million Switch 2 hardware units sold in FY26, the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026. That was 4.86 million above its initial 15 million forecast and 860,000 above its revised 19 million forecast, figures Nintendo recounted in its May 2026 earnings Q&A. Nintendo’s Q&A summary attributes the result to several factors rather than a single launch driver.

President Shuntaro Furukawa cited expanded production capacity, worldwide prelaunch Nintendo Switch 2 Experience events, the existing Switch audience, backward compatibility with Nintendo Switch software, and software releases. Compatibility helped ease the transition for players with existing Switch libraries. Later releases also mattered: Nintendo said the January 2026 Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and free update increased engagement, while March’s Pokémon Pokopia performed well in Japan and other regions and drove hardware sales.
What is Nintendo forecasting for FY27?
For FY27, which ends March 31, 2027, Nintendo forecasts 16.50 million Switch 2 hardware units. The company’s May 8, 2026 forecast presentation describes that as a 16.9% decrease from FY26’s 19.86 million actual units. The 16.50 million figure is a projection for the full fiscal year, not sales already achieved. Nintendo’s FY27 forecast presentation frames the forecast as a solid second-year adoption level and says it expects the installed base to keep growing.

- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
The forecast is lower partly because Nintendo says Switch 2 sales were more concentrated in the launch year than sales of its previous hardware systems. Nintendo notes that it had generally seen higher sales in the second fiscal year than in a system’s launch year, but says Switch 2’s launch-year level was unprecedented among its prior systems. A weaker year-over-year comparison therefore follows an exceptionally strong first year; it does not, by itself, establish that demand is collapsing.
How do the hardware and software forecasts compare?
| Measure | FY26 actual | FY27 forecast | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Switch 2 hardware | 19.86 million units | 16.50 million units | Down 16.9% |
| Switch 2 software | 48.71 million units | 60.00 million units | Up 23.2% |
These are Nintendo’s reported FY26 totals and FY27 forecast in its May 2026 presentation. The software comparison needs a qualification: FY26’s 48.71 million includes about 12.60 million units bundled with hardware, while the FY27 forecast of 60.00 million excludes software bundled with hardware or other products. The figures therefore do not use the same bundling basis, and the forecast increase should not be read as a like-for-like measure of standalone game purchases.

What do the latest cumulative sales figures show?
Nintendo’s official sales page lists cumulative Switch 2 sales of 23.68 million hardware units and 58.17 million software units as of June 30, 2026. Those are worldwide totals through that date, not October 2026 figures. Nintendo’s hardware and software sales page provides the dated snapshot.

Nintendo’s FY27 materials said a price revision was planned in the United States and Europe, effective September 1, 2026: $499.99 in the United States and €499.99 in Europe. The Associated Press reported that the U.S. price would rise from $449.99 to $499.99. AP’s report on the planned U.S. increase covers the American price change. Nintendo connected its expected FY27 year-over-year hardware decline with both the unusually concentrated launch-year sales and price revisions. The company’s materials do not quantify how much of the forecast change is attributable to each factor, so the forecast should not be treated as a precise estimate of the effect of the price change alone.
