But the company’s support page for restriction codes 2124-4007 and 2124-4508 does not explain why a particular console was restricted—and Nintendo has not published a count of Switch 2 piracy bans. Here’s what its rules and documented enforcement actions establish, and what they don’t.
What Nintendo’s Switch 2 agreement prohibits
Nintendo of America’s Switch 2 User Agreement, whose effective date is shown as September 2026, prohibits bypassing, modifying, decrypting, defeating, tampering with, or otherwise circumventing protections on the console or its software. It specifically includes hardware or software that makes the system operate with unauthorized, illegal, or pirated software or hardware. The agreement also prohibits installing software Nintendo identifies as an unauthorized copy.
Those are the agreement’s stated terms, not proof that every reported restriction was imposed for piracy. A user’s account of a ban may be accurate, but it does not independently establish Nintendo’s reason in that individual case.
How Nintendo describes MIG cartridges and mod chips
In its Intellectual Property & Piracy FAQ, Nintendo describes MIG Switch/MIG Flash and similar piracy cartridges as circumvention devices. It also says mod chips bypass console security and characterizes uploading or downloading pirate game files as illegal. These are Nintendo’s descriptions and legal position.

Nintendo says its IP Enforcement programs operate in more than 40 countries and use legal enforcement, consumer awareness, technology, and efforts to improve intellectual-property legislation. The FAQ does not specify a year for that figure, and it is not a count or rate of Switch 2 bans.
What error codes 2124-4007 and 2124-4508 mean
Nintendo’s support page for errors 2124-4007 and 2124-4508 says that online-service use on the console is restricted by Nintendo. The codes confirm a restriction on online services; they do not state the cause. The page therefore cannot diagnose why a particular console received a restriction.

Nintendo enforcement can target more than console access
Console service restrictions are only one kind of enforcement. Nintendo has also announced marketplace cooperation and pursued legal cases involving circumvention devices and game distribution. These actions have different targets and evidentiary status:

In its May 27, 2025 announcement, Nintendo said it was working with Mercari, LINE Yahoo, and Rakuten Group to prevent improper Nintendo-product listings. The release is evidence of the announced cooperation, not evidence that every listing was removed or that it resulted in console bans.

What the court cases establish—and what they do not
The Ryan Michael Daly case
Nintendo filed a complaint against Ryan Michael Daly on June 28, 2024. The complaint described MIG Switch as a flash cart and MIG Dumper as a device for copying game cartridges, and alleged that the devices circumvented protections. Those descriptions of the defendant’s conduct are allegations in a court filing. Tom’s Hardware later reported that a stipulated judgment dated September 5, 2025, included $2 million in damages and a permanent injunction covering devices including MIG Switch and MIG Dumper.
The James Williams case
In September 2026, GamesRadar+ reported a $4.5 million default judgment against James Williams in a separate case involving alleged online distribution of pirated Switch games. That judgment is not a measurement of Switch 2 console bans and does not establish why any individual console lost access to online services.

What remains unverified about Switch 2 bans
- Nintendo’s cited official sources do not publish a total or rate of Switch 2 consoles banned for piracy.
- The restriction-code page confirms that Nintendo has restricted online-service use on a console, but it does not disclose the reason for any one restriction.
- User reports about MIG Flash, cartridges, or ban waves are not, by themselves, confirmation from Nintendo of the number affected or the cause of each case.
- The cited court actions and marketplace announcement document other enforcement routes; they should not be treated as evidence of a particular ban wave.
Players who believe they have found a potential infringement can consult Nintendo’s reporting guidance. That reporting route does not itself diagnose or appeal a console restriction.
