Nintendo first announced Nintendo Switch 2 on January 16, 2025, giving it a broad release window of 2025. The company confirmed the exact launch date—June 5, 2025—on April 2. The console has since been released.

When did Nintendo first announce Switch 2?

Nintendo revealed the console on January 16, 2025, identifying it as the successor to Nintendo Switch and sharing a first-look video. The announcement said it would launch in 2025, but did not give a specific date. Nintendo also announced that a dedicated Nintendo Direct would air on April 2. Nintendo’s first-look announcement set out that initial timeline.

When was the Switch 2 release date confirmed?

Nintendo confirmed the exact release date during its April 2, 2025 presentation: June 5, 2025. That makes April 2 the date the launch day was confirmed—not the console’s first announcement. Nintendo’s April 2 release announcement also detailed launch information for Japan, including a ¥49,980 suggested retail price for the console and a ¥53,980 Mario Kart World set. Those figures were Japan-market launch-era prices, not universal or current prices. Nintendo Australia separately announced a June 5 launch at AU$699.95. The Australian announcement applies to that region.

What the first announcement did—and did not—confirm

The January announcement established the console’s name, successor status, first-look video, and release year. It did not establish the exact launch date or provide the full feature and price details; Nintendo pointed viewers to the April Direct for more information. Nintendo also warned that some original Switch games might not be supported or fully compatible. It did not guarantee that every Switch game would work on Switch 2.

In April, Nintendo said compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games could be played on Switch 2. It also specified that additional storage uses microSD Express cards, rather than older microSD models. Check Nintendo’s compatibility information for a particular game instead of assuming support based on the general announcement.
