Nintendo Switch 2 plays many Nintendo Switch games, but “compatible” does not always mean a game launches, progresses normally or supports every feature. Nintendo’s U.S. compatibility information is marked current as of June 5, 2025—not October 2026—so the examples below are not a complete, current list. Check the individual Nintendo game listing or eShop before buying or upgrading.
How Nintendo classifies Switch 2 compatibility issues
Nintendo’s materials separate several outcomes that are easy to blur together. A title may fail to start or prevent progress; it may start but have an in-game issue; or a previously identified issue may have been fixed or scheduled for a fix. These categories matter: an entry in a resolved-issues document is not evidence that the same problem persists today.

- Start-up or progress issue: the game may not launch correctly or may be impossible to progress through.
- In-game issue: the game starts, but some function or content may not work as intended.
- Resolved or planned update: Nintendo’s document records an earlier issue as fixed, or describes a fix as planned. Verify the current title status rather than treating an old entry as an active incompatibility.
Nintendo says its compatibility information can change as testing and updates continue. Its U.S. page directs players to check the game’s product page or Nintendo eShop for the latest title-specific status: Nintendo Switch 2 compatibility.
Examples of games Nintendo has listed with issues
The following are examples from Nintendo of Europe’s issue documents, not a complete or current U.S. master list. The retrieved copies do not state revision dates, and individual status may have changed. Check the exact edition and region in Nintendo’s current listing before relying on an entry.

Issues that may prevent start-up or progress
Nintendo of Europe’s document titled “Games with issues that prevent progress on Nintendo Switch 2, including games with start up issues” includes Borderlands 3 Ultimate Edition, Mortal Kombat 1, Overwatch 2, Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and NieR:Automata The End of YoRHa Edition. The listed handling for many entries says the issue is being investigated. These are examples of issues Nintendo recorded in that document, not a claim that every edition remains unplayable now. Nintendo of Europe: games with issues that prevent progress.
Games that start but have in-game issues
A separate Nintendo of Europe list covers games that start on Switch 2 but have in-game compatibility issues. Examples include Alan Wake Remastered, Alien: Isolation and several Arcade Archives releases. The entries shown say the issues are being investigated; consult the current listing for the game you own. Nintendo of Europe: games with in-game issues.

Previously identified issues and update notes
Nintendo’s resolved/planned-issues document includes many entries marked resolved after an update, as well as remaining caveats in the retrieved copy. For example, it notes that slowdown may occur in parts of GO VACATION, screen distortion may occur in parts of Genso Manège, and football in Play Globally in Nintendo Switch Sports runs at 30 fps, with a fix planned. The document’s revision date is not provided in the retrieved copy, so none of these notes establishes the games’ current October 2026 behavior. It also states that a Nintendo Switch 2 version of Fortnite is available. Nintendo of Europe: issues resolved or planned to be addressed.
When the limitation is the controller, not the game
Some compatibility notes concern input hardware rather than a software failure. Original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but Joy-Con 2 lack the original right Joy-Con’s IR Motion Camera and do not physically fit certain legacy accessories. - 1-2-Switch: the game can be played on Switch 2, but modes that use the IR Motion Camera require an original right Joy-Con.
Original Joy-Con are a workaround for these specific controller requirements, not for crashes, start-up failures or other software-level issues. They cannot attach to the Switch 2 console; Nintendo says a Nintendo Switch console, Joy-Con charging grip or two-way Joy-Con charging stand is needed to charge them. - Search the exact game title on Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility page and open its title-specific information.
- Check the game’s Nintendo eShop or product page on your device. Nintendo recommends these pages for the latest status because compatibility information may change.
- Match the listing to your game’s edition and region. Nintendo’s documents include version-specific notes, including physical-only and Japanese-version caveats.
- Identify the outcome described: cannot start or progress, starts with an in-game issue, requires a particular controller/accessory, or had an issue marked resolved or planned for an update.
- If Switch 2 displays “This Software Can’t Be Played,” Nintendo says the message means the game is not compatible with Switch 2. Play it on a Nintendo Switch console and consult Nintendo’s compatibility guidance. Nintendo Support: “This Software Can’t Be Played”.
What to make of an old compatibility entry
A list entry is a dated status report, not a permanent verdict. Nintendo’s U.S. page labels its published issue information as current as of June 5, 2025, while the Europe documents cited above do not state revision dates in the retrieved copies. A title might have received an update, have a different status in another region or edition, or be affected only in a particular mode. For a purchase decision, the current Nintendo listing for the exact game is more useful than a copied list of “incompatible” titles.
