Yes: either Switch 2 Joy-Con 2 can work like a mouse in games that support mouse control. A pre-release leak made that upgrade look plausible, but the leak itself did not confirm the feature—Nintendo did that later, with its April 2, 2025 announcement and product specifications. The new controllers also attach magnetically, and the right Joy-Con 2 has a C Button for GameChat.
What the controller leak suggested—and what Nintendo confirmed
A January 2025 report pointed to leaked Joy-Con images with an apparent optical sensor and raised the possibility of mouse-like input. That was an inference from images, not proof of what the hardware could do. Nintendo later confirmed that either Joy-Con 2 can be used like a mouse in compatible games, and its current specifications list a mouse sensor in both controllers. Ars Technica’s January 7 report is useful as the early signal; Nintendo’s launch announcement and accessory specifications establish the feature.

The specific original leaker and provenance of the first images are not established by these sources. The accurate takeaway is that a pre-release report inferred mouse capability, and Nintendo later confirmed the capability—not that the leak itself proved it or that Nintendo confirmed a particular leak.
Can you use the Switch 2 Joy-Con as a mouse?
Yes, when a game supports mouse control. Nintendo says either Joy-Con 2 can operate like a mouse by sliding it on a surface. The feature is not a system-wide mouse mode guaranteed to work in every game, and Nintendo notes that the surface material or fabric can affect operation.

Nintendo’s developer interview describes several concrete uses:
- In Metroid Prime 4: Beyond – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, Nintendo describes moving with the left Joy-Con 2 stick while using the right Joy-Con 2 as a mouse to aim and shoot.
- Drag x Drive is described as supporting play with both controllers used as mice.
- Super Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV includes mouse-control content.
These are Nintendo’s examples, not a count of all compatible games. The feature’s usefulness depends on support in the specific title you want to play. Nintendo developer Takuhiro Dohta, a software developer, put the appeal this way: “Speaking as a software developer, it’s great to have an option like this.” Nintendo’s developer interview discusses these examples and the design context.

What’s new about the Switch 2 controllers?
Joy-Con 2
Both the left and right Joy-Con 2 list an accelerometer, gyroscope and mouse sensor. They attach to the console magnetically rather than using the original Joy-Con attachment system. The right controller adds a C Button that opens GameChat. The Nintendo Switch 2 includes one left and one right Joy-Con 2.
Switch 2 Pro Controller
The Pro Controller is the conventional, one-piece option. It has a C Button, a headset audio jack and two rear buttons called GL and GR that can be freely mapped. Nintendo says button assignments are saved per game and player; the buttons can make frequently used or harder-to-reach inputs more accessible. Hardware designer Tatsuya Kawamoto said of GL/GR: “Players can assign any button inputs they want to these two new buttons.”

Battery life and regional listings
Nintendo lists estimated battery life of approximately 20 hours per Joy-Con 2 and approximately 40 hours for the Pro Controller. These are manufacturer estimates, not independent test results; Nintendo says actual battery life varies with use. Product listings and accessory availability differ by region and can change. Nintendo’s UK accessories page notes rolling European product revisions with user-replaceable batteries starting in summer 2026, so the revision on sale depends on the market and listing.
