Yes—Nintendo Switch 2 is already available in the United States. It launched on June 5, 2025, with a $449.99 standalone MSRP as of August 11, 2026. Nintendo has announced that the U.S. system price will increase to $499.99 on September 1, 2026, so the timing matters if you are planning to buy one.
Switch 2 keeps the original console’s hybrid design but adds a larger 1080p HDR display, up to 120Hz variable refresh rates in compatible games, up to 4K output in TV mode, 256GB of internal storage, magnetically attached Joy-Con 2 controllers with mouse controls, GameChat, GameShare, and a growing library of Switch 2-exclusive and enhanced games. It also plays compatible original Nintendo Switch games—but compatibility is not universal, and some upgrades cost extra.
Launch date, price, and what comes in the box
Nintendo Switch 2 launched in the U.S. on June 5, 2025. The current U.S. system MSRP is $449.99 as of August 11, 2026. That is the manufacturer’s suggested price, not a guarantee that every retailer will charge exactly that amount or have stock.

Nintendo has announced an upcoming U.S. price change: beginning September 1, 2026, the system MSRP will rise from $449.99 to $499.99. Until that date, describing $499.99 as the current standalone price would be premature.
Switch 2 purchase options
| Option | Price | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Standalone system | $449.99 U.S. MSRP through August 31, 2026 | Includes the console, Joy-Con 2 controllers, dock, cables, and power accessories. |
| Announced future standalone MSRP | $499.99 beginning September 1, 2026 | This is an announced upcoming price, not the current August 11, 2026 price. |
| Launch Mario Kart World bundle | $499.99 | The launch bundle paired the system with Mario Kart World. Availability may depend on remaining retailer stock. |
| Choose Your Game Bundle | $499.99 | Participating retailers may offer a digital download code for one selected game: Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, or Pokémon Pokopia. Offer dates, participating stores, and supplies vary. |
For a new buyer, the bundle is potentially the better value only when the included game is one you already want. Do not assume that every $499.99 bundle has the same game, format, availability, or end date.

The standard package includes the Switch 2 console, a pair of Joy-Con 2 controllers, a Joy-Con 2 grip, Joy-Con 2 straps, the Switch 2 dock, an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable, an AC adapter, and a USB-C charging cable. A carrying case, screen protector, camera, extra dock, Pro Controller, and microSD Express card are separate purchases.
For shoppers comparing the hardware itself, the Nintendo Switch 2 is the purchase to evaluate first; retailer prices and bundle inventory can change independently of Nintendo’s MSRP.
Hardware and display specifications
Switch 2 remains a three-mode system. You can use it as a handheld, stand the screen up for tabletop play, or place it in the dock for TV gaming. The largest physical change is the built-in screen, but the faster custom NVIDIA processor also enables more ambitious software and higher output targets than the original Switch.
| Specification | Nintendo Switch 2 |
|---|---|
| Built-in display | 7.9-inch LCD |
| Handheld resolution | 1920 × 1080 |
| HDR | HDR10 support |
| Refresh rate | Variable refresh rates up to 120Hz in compatible games |
| TV output | Up to 4K in compatible games and with compatible displays |
| 4K frame-rate limit | Up to 60 frames per second |
| Processor | Custom NVIDIA processor |
| Internal storage | 256GB UFS, with some capacity reserved for system use |
| Dimensions with Joy-Con 2 attached | Approximately 4.5 inches tall, 10.7 inches wide, and 0.55 inches thick |
| Weight with Joy-Con 2 attached | Approximately 1.18 pounds |
The display resolution is 1920 × 1080 in handheld mode, not 4K. The 4K specification applies to TV-mode output, and only compatible games and displays can take advantage of it. Likewise, 120Hz and variable refresh rate are not automatic benefits in every game. Actual resolution, frame rate, loading improvements, and visual enhancements depend on the software.
Nintendo describes the new processor as providing faster loading, sharper visuals, smoother frame rates, and broader performance improvements compared with the original Switch. Those are platform capabilities rather than a promise that every game will receive the same upgrade. Nintendo’s published specifications also do not establish battery-life results, thermal behavior, durability, or independent performance benchmarks.
Storage: buy microSD Express, not a regular Switch card
Switch 2 includes 256GB of internal UFS storage, although the usable amount is lower because some space is reserved for the operating system and other system data. Digital games, updates, downloadable content, and screenshots can make that capacity disappear quickly if you buy many games digitally.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Expansion requires a microSD Express card. Nintendo says Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards up to 2TB. A regular microSD card that worked in the original Switch is not a substitute: ordinary cards cannot be used to save or load digital games or save data on Switch 2.
A first-use system update is required when setting up a microSD Express card. If you are shopping for expansion, look specifically for a Nintendo Switch 2 microSD Express card rather than a generic Nintendo Switch memory card. Nintendo’s accessory catalog includes a 256GB Samsung microSD Express option, but other compatible capacities and brands may also be available.
Storage check before buying: If you mainly use physical game cards and do not download many large titles, the internal storage may be enough initially. If you expect a download-heavy library, plan for microSD Express storage from the start. Do not reuse an ordinary Switch microSD card for Switch 2 game storage.
Joy-Con 2: magnetic attachment and mouse controls
Joy-Con 2 controllers attach to the console magnetically instead of sliding onto the original Switch’s rail system. They still support the familiar detached-controller, grip, motion-control, and tabletop play styles, but their new mouse capability is the feature most likely to change how certain games feel.

In compatible software, a Joy-Con 2 can be placed on a table, lap, or another surface and used like a mouse. A sensor on the side of each controller tracks the movement. Supported games can use both Joy-Con 2 controllers as mouse devices at the same time, opening up control schemes that are difficult or impractical with the original Joy-Con.
Mouse controls are a software-dependent feature, not a universal operating mode. A game must be designed or updated to support them, and a regular Joy-Con or Pro Controller cannot reproduce every Joy-Con 2-specific function.
Should you buy the Pro Controller?
The included Joy-Con 2 pair is enough to start playing, but TV-focused players may prefer the separate Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller. It is a conventional full-size gamepad with a C Button for GameChat, remappable GL and GR buttons, an audio jack, HD Rumble 2, motion controls, and built-in amiibo functionality.
The Pro Controller is supplemental rather than essential. It makes the most sense for long TV sessions, players who prefer a traditional controller shape, or households that need another gamepad for multiplayer.

GameChat is Switch 2’s built-in communication feature. Press the C Button on the right Joy-Con 2 controller to start it. The feature supports:
- Voice chat for up to 12 people.
- Real-time game-screen sharing.
- Video chat when a compatible USB-C camera is connected.
- Up to four people sharing their game screen or participating in video chat simultaneously.
The console has a built-in microphone, and Nintendo says it uses noise filtering and automatic volume adjustment. That means a camera is not required for voice chat. Video chat is an optional part of the feature and requires a compatible camera.
The official Nintendo Switch 2 Camera connects over USB-C and includes a privacy shutter. Nintendo says compatible third-party USB-C cameras may also work for video features, but compatibility should be checked before purchasing a non-Nintendo model. If you only want voice chat, the built-in microphone means you do not need to buy a camera.
GameChat requirements and safety controls
Online GameChat features require internet access, a Nintendo Account, and a Nintendo Switch Online membership, subject to Nintendo’s regional terms and any limited-time offers. GameChat invitations are limited to Nintendo friends, and text-message verification is required during setup.
Recommended Free Tools
Nintendo provides reporting tools for offensive behavior. Children under 16 require parent or guardian approval through the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app. Parents should set up the relevant account and approval requirements before expecting a child to use GameChat.
Controllers without a C Button can still reach GameChat through the HOME Menu. However, the C Button on Joy-Con 2 or the Switch 2 Pro Controller is the direct shortcut.
GameShare is useful, but it is not license transfer
GameShare lets a Switch 2 share supported games with nearby players who do not own the game. It is a game-specific feature, not a general system for lending or transferring your digital ownership.

| Online GameShare | Supported games can be shared through GameChat with other Switch 2 systems. |
| Recipient access | Online recipients can use the shared game only for the GameChat session in which it was shared. |
GameShare works only with supported titles and can have game-specific restrictions. Online use requires internet access, Nintendo Accounts, and Nintendo Switch Online under Nintendo’s stated requirements. Before planning a multiplayer night around it, check whether the particular game supports GameShare and whether every player’s system meets the requirements.
Donkey Kong Bananza is one example of a game Nintendo lists with GameShare support. That does not mean every Switch 2 game, or every original Switch game, can be shared this way.
Games: exclusives, launch titles, and enhanced editions
The Switch 2 library combines three categories: games built exclusively for Switch 2, enhanced editions of original Switch games, and original Switch releases that remain compatible without necessarily receiving a major upgrade.
Mario Kart World
Mario Kart World for Switch 2 is a Switch 2-exclusive racing game built around connected courses and a broader explorable environment. Nintendo describes races with up to 24 drivers and a Knockout Tour mode in which players move through successive courses and checkpoints. It was also the game associated with the $499.99 launch bundle and is one of the games included in the announced Choose Your Game Bundle options.
Donkey Kong Bananza
Donkey Kong Bananza is a Switch 2-exclusive action-adventure game released on July 17, 2025. Its central idea is destructive exploration: Donkey Kong and Pauline travel through an underground world, breaking terrain, opening routes, and using transformations and abilities to progress. Nintendo lists single-system play for one or two players and GameShare support.
Other launch software and enhanced editions
Nintendo highlighted EA SPORTS Madden NFL and Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition among the new or system-focused software available around launch. Enhanced editions included Super Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV and Sid Meier’s Civilization VII – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition.
By August 2026, the catalog also includes later Switch 2 releases and announced projects. Release dates, bundles, physical-versus-digital availability, and edition names can change, so a list labeled latest should be checked against Nintendo’s current store listing before publication or purchase. The safest way to evaluate a specific game is to confirm whether it is a Switch 2 title, a free update, a paid Switch 2 Edition upgrade, or simply a compatible original Switch game.
Backward compatibility: what happens to your original Switch library?
Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital games released for the original Nintendo Switch. That makes the upgrade less disruptive than moving to an entirely new platform, but it is inaccurate to call the system universally backward compatible.
Nintendo maintains separate compatibility information for games that start successfully but have in-game issues, games with startup problems, and titles whose issues are being investigated or addressed. Check the official compatibility information for a specific game before assuming that it will run perfectly or support every feature.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree updates versus paid upgrade packs
Some original Switch games receive free updates that improve their behavior on Switch 2. Selected games instead offer paid Switch 2 Edition upgrade packs. Depending on the game, an upgrade pack may add sharper image quality, smoother frame rates, extra modes, or other title-specific features.

Owning the original game therefore does not automatically mean that every Switch 2 enhancement is free. The upgrade policy is determined by each game, so check the product page or the publisher’s announcement before budgeting for an upgrade.
| Situation | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Compatible physical Switch game | You generally still need the original game card, and the title must be compatible. |
| Compatible digital Switch game | It can be transferred or redownloaded after the system-transfer process, subject to compatibility. |
| Free update | The publisher may improve performance or features without charging for a separate upgrade pack. |
| Paid Switch 2 Edition upgrade | Additional features or enhancements may require a separate purchase. |
| Unsupported or problematic title | The game may fail to start, have in-game issues, or lack full support for Switch 2 features. |
Can you use original Switch controllers?
Existing Nintendo Switch controllers can generally be paired wirelessly with Switch 2, including original Joy-Con and the original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. Original Joy-Con controllers cannot attach directly to the Switch 2 console, however.
There are also feature limitations. Some Switch 2 games require Joy-Con 2-specific functions such as mouse control, so an original controller may not support every control option. An original controller without a C Button can still access GameChat through the HOME Menu rather than the direct C Button shortcut.
Nintendo Switch Online and Nintendo Classics
Your existing Nintendo Switch Online membership continues to work on Switch 2. Nintendo Switch Online provides online play in compatible games and access to Nintendo’s classic-game libraries.
Switch 2 adds access to the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics library, which is exclusive to Switch 2. Nintendo says the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack catalog includes more than 270 titles across GameCube, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, Virtual Boy, Super NES, Game Boy, NES, and selected SEGA Genesis libraries.
The exact catalog and regional availability can change. Some classic games support features such as online play and rewind, but those features are determined by the individual title. Expansion Pack access is an ongoing subscription benefit, not a replacement for owning modern Switch 2 games.

Nintendo provides a system-transfer process for moving much of your existing setup. The process can transfer settings, linked Nintendo Accounts, digital games, save data, parental-control settings, and other content from an original Switch to Switch 2. Digital games can be redownloaded after the transfer.

You need an internet connection and at least one user profile linked to a Nintendo Account. GameChat settings must be adjusted separately, so transferring the rest of the system does not finish every communication setting automatically.
Practical transfer checklist
- Update both systems before beginning the transfer.
- Connect both consoles to the internet and confirm that at least one profile is linked to a Nintendo Account.
- Use Nintendo’s system-transfer process to move users, settings, saves, digital games, and parental-control data.
- Redownload digital games as needed after the transfer.
- Reconfigure GameChat settings separately.
- Check the compatibility status of games you plan to play regularly.
- For physical games, keep the original game cards available and verify each title’s Switch 2 compatibility.
Data transfer does not turn an incompatible game into a compatible one. Your library may include titles that start with limitations, have known in-game issues, or do not support Switch 2 features. Treat transfer and compatibility as two separate checks.

Accessories worth considering
| Accessory | Who should consider it | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| MicroSD Express card | Players who download many games or large updates | It must be microSD Express; ordinary original-Switch microSD cards are not suitable for Switch 2 game storage. |
| Carrying case and screen protector | Players who will regularly use handheld mode | Protection is optional, but a case should be designed for the larger Switch 2 hardware. |
| USB-C camera | Players who specifically want video GameChat or compatible in-game camera functions | Voice GameChat uses the built-in microphone, so a camera is not required for voice. |
| Second dock | Households that regularly move the system between two TV locations | It is a convenience purchase, not a performance upgrade. |
| Switch 2 Pro Controller | TV-mode players who prefer a conventional gamepad | Joy-Con 2 controllers are already included. |
| Joy-Con 2 wheels | Players who want a steering-wheel-style grip for supported racing games | They are optional grips and do not add new electronic controls. |
A Nintendo Switch 2 case and Switch 2 screen protector are sensible additions for portable players, but neither is required to use the console. The key fit issue is that original Switch cases and screen protectors may not be sized for the new system.
The Switch 2 Camera is also an optional purchase: video GameChat and certain in-game camera functions need a compatible USB-C camera, while voice chat does not. Check third-party compatibility before choosing a camera instead of Nintendo’s dedicated model.

It is a strong upgrade for:
- Players who want Switch 2-exclusive games such as Mario Kart World or Donkey Kong Bananza.
- Handheld players who will notice the move to a larger 7.9-inch 1080p HDR display.
- TV players with a compatible 4K display who want access to higher-output modes in supported games.
- Owners who want faster hardware, improved visuals, smoother frame rates, or shorter loading in software that takes advantage of the system.
- Players interested in Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, GameChat, GameShare, or the Switch 2-exclusive GameCube – Nintendo Classics library.
- New Nintendo players who can make good use of a system-and-game bundle.
You may not need to upgrade immediately if:
- Your current Switch already plays the games you care about and you are not interested in Switch 2-exclusive releases.
- You mainly play compatible original Switch games without needing enhanced resolution, frame rates, or extra modes.
- You would need to buy several accessories and a new game before the upgrade provides meaningful value.
- You are expecting every original Switch game to receive an automatic or free enhancement. That is not how compatibility and Switch 2 Edition upgrades work.
For an existing owner, the decision is less about abandoning the original Switch and more about paying for newer exclusives, stronger hardware, a better handheld display, and new platform features. Many original Switch games remain playable on the older system, while some will work on Switch 2 without receiving the same level of enhancement.
For a first-time buyer, buying a Nintendo Switch 2 with a game can make more sense than choosing the standalone system, provided the game in the bundle is one you would have bought separately. If the included title is not appealing, the standalone console leaves you free to choose a different game.
What to do before buying
- Check the date and price. In the U.S., the listed standalone MSRP is $449.99 through August 31, 2026, with Nintendo’s announced increase to $499.99 starting September 1.
- Compare the bundle’s actual game. The Choose Your Game Bundle is limited-time and retailer-dependent; confirm whether the code is for Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, or Pokémon Pokopia.
- Decide how much you will download. If the answer is a lot, budget for a microSD Express card rather than reusing an old Switch microSD card.
- Check your existing library. Look up compatibility and whether each game has a free update or paid Switch 2 Edition upgrade.
- Choose accessories based on how you play. Portable players should prioritize protection, TV players may prefer a Pro Controller, and only video-Chat users need a camera.
- Plan the transfer. Make sure your accounts, internet connection, saves, and parental-control settings are ready before moving from the original system.
Frequently Asked Questions

Recommended Free Tools
Can Nintendo Switch 2 use the original Switch microSD card?
Not for saving or loading digital games or save data. Switch 2 requires a microSD Express card for expansion, and Nintendo says cards up to 2TB are supported.
Does Switch 2 play original Nintendo Switch games?
It plays compatible physical and digital Switch games, but compatibility is not universal. Some games have startup or in-game issues, and selected titles require paid Switch 2 Edition upgrade packs for certain enhancements.
Do I need a camera to use GameChat?
No. Switch 2 has a built-in microphone for voice chat. A compatible USB-C camera is required for video chat and certain camera-based in-game functions.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Nintendo Switch 2 is a substantial hardware upgrade rather than a clean break from the original Switch. Its biggest reasons to buy are Switch 2-exclusive games, the larger 1080p HDR handheld screen, stronger TV output, faster hardware, Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, GameChat, GameShare, and the Switch 2-exclusive GameCube – Nintendo Classics library. Existing owners can continue using many of their current games and controllers, but should check compatibility, paid upgrade requirements, and the need for microSD Express storage before making the move. In the U.S., the announced September 1, 2026 price increase also makes the purchase date worth considering.
