In the United States, the legacy PlayStation Store remains accessible on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita as of August 11, 2026. Sony’s current U.S. notice says new PS3 and PS Vita Store purchases are scheduled to end starting in July 2027. Until then, you can still browse supported listings, buy games and DLC with PlayStation wallet funds, and download previously purchased content on the older hardware.
The important limitation is payment: PS3 and PS Vita can no longer use a credit card, debit card, PayPal, or another payment method directly at the console or handheld. You must first add money to the same PlayStation account through a current browser, PS4, PS5, or a region-matched PlayStation Store gift card.
What “the old PlayStation Store” means
This guide covers the Store application built into the PS3 and PS Vita. It does not describe the modern PlayStation Store website or the PS4 and PS5 storefronts.

The legacy Store’s catalog and menus can differ by device, account region, platform, publisher, and licensing status. A game appearing in a modern web search does not prove that it can still be purchased on PS3 or PS Vita. Some titles may be listed only for another platform, delisted, restricted to a particular region, or unavailable because of publisher or service limitations.
Sony’s operating rules and closure timetable can change, so check the latest regional PlayStation support notice immediately before making a time-sensitive purchase. The July 2027 date described here is the current U.S. timetable, not necessarily the timetable for every country.

What you need before opening the Store
- A working PS3 or PS Vita connected to the internet and able to reach PlayStation Network.
- The PlayStation account that will own the purchase.
- A computer or mobile browser for account management and wallet funding.
- A Device Setup Password for legacy-device sign-in.
- Enough money in the account’s PlayStation wallet.
- Free storage space. Some PS Vita downloads also require a compatible Vita memory card.
If you do not own the relevant hardware, a PlayStation 3 console or PlayStation Vita system may be the most direct way to access that platform’s legacy Store. For used hardware, verify that the console powers on, connects to the network, displays an image, accepts a controller, and has usable storage. Do not assume that every used listing can access every remaining Store item.
Update the system software where possible before troubleshooting Store access. Sony’s PS3 system-software documentation treats current available system software as an important compatibility prerequisite.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteStep 1: Generate a Device Setup Password
PS3 and PS Vita legacy sign-in uses a special Device Setup Password instead of the normal password for your PlayStation account.
- On a current computer or mobile browser, sign in to PlayStation Account Management.
- Choose Generate New Password.
- Save the displayed password securely.
- On the PS3 or PS Vita, enter the account’s sign-in ID, normally its email address, and the generated Device Setup Password.
- Enable automatic sign-in if you want the device to remember the sign-in. Otherwise, the device password may be requested again.
If the console rejects your ordinary PlayStation account password, that is usually the reason: generate and use the Device Setup Password instead. Sony allows you to revoke and replace a device password through Account Management.
Do not share this password. If you sell, lend, lose, or temporarily share the system, revoke its Device Setup Password in Account Management.
Step 2: Add money to your PlayStation wallet
The PS3 and PS Vita legacy checkout cannot take a card or PayPal payment directly. Add wallet funds before selecting Purchase on the older device.

Available funding methods
- Current browser: Sign in to Account Management or the current PlayStation Store and add money using an accepted payment method.
- PS4 or PS5: Add funds while signed in to the same PlayStation account.
- PlayStation Store gift card or wallet voucher: Redeem a code that matches the account’s country or region.
For a U.S. account, use U.S.-region wallet funding. Sony’s current U.S. payment documentation lists modern payment options including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, PayPal, Venmo, Apple Pay, and Cash App Pay, although the options shown can depend on the account’s region and other account conditions.
A PlayStation Store gift card can be convenient when you do not want to attach a payment method to the account. Availability, denominations, and retailer legitimacy can change, so verify the region before buying. PlayStation voucher codes are generally 12 digits, single-use, and cannot be transferred between accounts.
Practical U.S. wallet workflow
- Open the U.S. PlayStation Store or Account Management in a current browser.
- Add a payment method and wallet funds, or redeem a U.S. PlayStation Store wallet voucher.
- Confirm that the wallet balance appears on the account.
- Sign in to the PS3 or PS Vita with the Device Setup Password.
- Open the legacy Store and use the wallet balance at checkout.
Redeem the voucher on the account that will make the purchase. Funds and voucher codes are not a safe workaround for buying content on a different account.
Step 3: Open and browse the legacy Store
On PS3
Open PlayStation Store from the PS3’s XMB, then sign in if prompted. Browse categories or use the Store’s search and product pages.
On PS Vita
Open the PS Store application from the Vita’s LiveArea screen, then sign in if prompted. Browse or search for the title you want.
Before buying, inspect the listing carefully:
- Check whether the item is for PS3, PS Vita, PSP, or a cross-buy entitlement.
- Confirm the price and that your wallet balance is sufficient.
- Check the required storage space.
- Identify whether it is a full game, add-on, theme, avatar, bundle, or another type of content.
- Look for an indication that you already own it.
The legacy catalog is not guaranteed to match the modern web Store. A listing can disappear because of delisting, licensing, publisher decisions, region restrictions, platform limitations, or service changes. If you previously bought a title but no longer see it in normal search, check the account’s download or purchase history.
Step 4: Buy a PS3 or PS Vita game
- Open the game’s product page on the relevant device.
- Select the purchase option.
- Confirm the title, platform, price, and wallet funding source.
- Accept the purchase confirmation.
- Start the download immediately, or find the title later in the device’s download list or purchase history.
The transaction must be completely covered by wallet funds. Keep the purchase confirmation and, if necessary, verify the transaction in the account’s transaction history.

- User Guide Languages: English, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, German, Dutch, Japanese and Arabic. Dynamic RGB LED lights.
If the game does not appear after purchase, check that the purchase was made on the same account currently signed in to the device. Content purchased by one account is not automatically available to another account.
Step 5: Buy and install DLC
You can buy downloadable content from a game’s Store listing and, where supported, from an in-game Store. Sony’s current notice says PS3 and PS Vita in-game-store content, including DLC, remains purchasable while the legacy Store is open, but the purchase must use wallet funds rather than a card or PayPal account entered on the older device.
- Open the game’s Store listing or supported in-game store.
- Check the DLC name, price, platform, edition, and region.
- Confirm that the wallet has enough funds.
- Complete the purchase.
- Download the add-on from the device’s download list or the relevant Store flow.
- Launch the base game and check its menus, inventory, or other expected location.
DLC is separate downloadable content and normally must be downloaded before it can be used. The game and add-on also need to be region-compatible. For example, an add-on intended for one regional release of a game may not work with a disc or download from another region.
Check whether a bundle, special edition, or complete edition already includes the DLC before buying it separately. This is the simplest way to avoid duplicate purchases.
Step 6: Download games and DLC you already own
Previously purchased PS3 and PS Vita content should be downloaded from the legacy device itself through its Store, download list, or purchase history. Do not treat the current web Store’s remote-download instructions for PS4 and PS5 as a direct remote-download method for PS3 or PS Vita.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Sign in to the original purchasing account using its Device Setup Password.
- Open the PS Store or the account’s download and purchase list on the PS3 or PS Vita.
- Locate the game, add-on, or other entitlement.
- Select Download.
- Check that there is enough storage and allow the transfer to finish.
Sony currently says previously purchased PS3 and PS Vita content is expected to remain downloadable for the foreseeable future after the July 2027 closure. That wording is not a guarantee of permanent access to every future download, every account-recovery situation, or every server-dependent feature. Download wanted purchases while the Store is still operating and keep the original account accessible.
Storage requirements and common hardware issues
PS Vita
Some PS Vita downloads require a compatible PS Vita memory card, depending on the system model and the content. A PS Vita memory card is not interchangeable with an ordinary microSD card unless a specific, separately supported adapter setup is being used. Verify compatibility with your Vita model before purchasing storage.
Before downloading, check the available space in the Vita’s storage settings. Delete or back up unneeded content only after confirming that you can download it again and that you know the owning account.
PS3
PS3 downloads use the console’s internal hard drive. If the drive is nearly full, remove unneeded data or investigate a compatible replacement. A PS3-compatible replacement hard drive must match the console’s physical and interface requirements, and replacing it can require system software, backup, and installation steps. Back up important saves before changing storage.

If restoring an older system, a working PS3 controller and HDMI cable can help, but accessories alone do not guarantee that the console can sign in or access every Store listing.
What changes in July 2027?
According to Sony’s current U.S. support notice, starting in July 2027:
- New PS3 and PS Vita Store purchases will no longer be possible.
- New games, add-ons, and other Store content cannot be bought on those devices.
- Existing owned content can continue to be played, subject to each game’s online-service availability.
- Previously purchased content is expected to remain downloadable for the foreseeable future.
Sony attributes the decision to the difficulty of reliably supporting updated commerce, payment, and security requirements on the older platforms.
This is different from Sony’s April 19, 2021 decision to keep the PS3 and PS Vita stores operating after an earlier planned shutdown. That 2021 announcement is historical context; Sony’s July 1, 2026 announcement and current U.S. support notice provide the relevant current closure timetable.

“My normal account password does not work.”
Generate a Device Setup Password in PlayStation Account Management and use it with the account’s sign-in ID. The ordinary account password is not the required legacy-device credential.
“The Store opens, but checkout fails.”
Confirm that the wallet was funded before checkout. Direct credit-card, debit-card, and PayPal payments on PS3 and PS Vita are no longer supported. Also confirm that you are signed in to the account whose wallet you funded.

“My voucher code is rejected.”
Check all of the following:
- The code has the correct number of digits and has not already been redeemed.
- The voucher’s country or region matches the PlayStation account.
- You are redeeming it on the intended account.
- The code was purchased from a legitimate source and has not been damaged or altered.
Voucher codes cannot be transferred between accounts, and a region mismatch is not fixed by entering the code on a different device.
“My purchased game cannot be found.”
Check the account’s transaction history, sign out and back in with the original purchasing account, and inspect the legacy device’s download or purchase list. A modern Store search result is not proof that the legacy listing is still available. A title may also have been delisted, region-restricted, or removed from sale while remaining in the download history of accounts that previously purchased it.
“The DLC is missing from the game.”
- Confirm that the DLC download completed.
- Confirm that the same account owns the add-on.
- Check that the game and DLC use compatible regions.
- Verify that the base game is the correct edition.
- Look in the game’s expected menu, inventory, or downloadable-content area.
Some DLC also depends on online servers or an account entitlement, so a successful download does not guarantee that every online feature remains operational.
“The download fails or stops.”
Check free storage, network connectivity, account identity, system software, and the current PlayStation Network or Store service status. On PS Vita, confirm that the required compatible memory card is installed. On PS3, check the internal hard drive and avoid interrupting the system during a download or installation.
Region, account, and security warnings
PlayStation Store content and vouchers are region-specific. Use the account region that matches the game, DLC, and wallet funding you intend to use. Sony says voucher codes must match the account region and cannot be moved between accounts.
Avoid unofficial “free download” sites, account-sharing schemes, modified-firmware instructions, and region-bypass methods. They can expose you to malware, stolen accounts, licensing problems, corrupted downloads, or account suspension. The safest approach is to use the original account, official Store applications, legitimate region-matched wallet funding, and supported system software.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I still buy PS3 and PS Vita games digitally?
In the United States, Sony’s current notice says the legacy PS3 and PS Vita stores remain available as of August 11, 2026, with new purchases scheduled to end starting in July 2027. Purchases require PlayStation wallet funds; direct card and PayPal checkout on the older devices is not supported.
Can I use the modern PlayStation Store website to download a PS3 or PS Vita purchase remotely?
The current remote-download instructions are intended for PS4 and PS5. For PS3 and PS Vita, download owned games and DLC from the legacy device’s Store, download list, or purchase history.
Will my purchased PS3 and PS Vita games disappear after July 2027?
Sony currently says previously purchased content is expected to remain downloadable for the foreseeable future. That does not guarantee permanent access to every title, account-recovery situation, or online feature, so download wanted content while the Store remains available.
Can I redeem a PlayStation gift card on PS3 or PS Vita?
Redeem a legitimate gift card or wallet voucher on the same PlayStation account that will make the purchase. The code must match the account’s country or region and generally cannot be transferred to another account.
Why does my PS Vita DLC not work?
Confirm that the add-on finished downloading, belongs to the current account, matches the game’s region and edition, and is being checked in the correct in-game location. Region-incompatible DLC may not work even when both the game and add-on were downloaded successfully.
The Bottom Line
The old PS3 and PS Vita Store still works in the U.S. for now, but its payment process is different: sign in with a Device Setup Password, fund the account wallet elsewhere, and complete the purchase on the legacy device. Buy and download wanted games and DLC before Sony’s current July 2027 closure timetable, while remembering that future downloads and online features are not guaranteed indefinitely.
