Preordering can make sense if you have already decided to play at launch, want the game ready to unlock on release day, or have confirmed a bonus you genuinely value. The trade-off is simple: waiting gives you more information; preordering prioritizes early access or a specific benefit.
How to decide whether to preorder or wait
| Your priority | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You are uncertain about quality, technical performance, or whether you will enjoy the game | Wait for reviews | Independent coverage can inform your decision before you buy. Review dates vary by game, so check the schedule for the specific title. |
| You have already decided to play on release day | Preorder may fit | A Nintendo eShop preorder can preload before launch, so the game is ready to unlock at release, provided you have enough storage. |
| A preorder bonus is your main reason | Verify the listing first | Only some games include bonuses. For Nintendo eShop preorders, Nintendo says a bonus download code is available after payment is processed. |
| You may change your mind | Check the seller’s terms | Nintendo eShop and Nintendo Store physical pre-purchases have different payment and cancellation terms; third-party retailer rules may differ. |
What a Nintendo eShop preorder involves in the U.S.
Nintendo of America says selected unreleased Switch and Switch 2 games can be preordered through the eShop; not every game is eligible. For an eligible preorder, payment is processed seven days before release. Nintendo then preloads the game if your system has enough storage, and a small update is required at release to unlock it. If the payment method fails, the preorder is canceled. See Nintendo’s eShop preorder instructions for current details.

Nintendo says you can cancel an eShop preorder before payment is processed, up to the seven-day-before-release cutoff. That is not an open-ended cancellation period: if you want to wait for reviews and preserve the option to cancel, check the release date and act before the payment date.
If a game releases within seven days or is already out, the eShop may show “Proceed to Purchase” rather than an option to preorder. Check the current listing for the game you want.

Physical pre-purchases have different terms
Nintendo of America’s guidance for physical games bought through the Nintendo Store says the full amount is charged immediately and the item ships 1–3 business days after release. Nintendo says cancellation requires contacting support. These terms apply to Nintendo Store purchases; they do not establish the charge, shipping, cancellation, or return rules of other retailers. Check the seller’s listing and policy before ordering. Details are on Nintendo’s pre-orders and pre-purchases support page.

There is no universal answer. Review-copy access and publication timing vary by game and publisher, and some reviews may appear only after a game goes live. Look up coverage for the specific title and note whether the outlet has stated when its review will publish; do not assume that reviews will be available before release.

The Switch 2 hardware launch is a notable but limited historical example. On June 3, 2025, Video Games Chronicle reported that Nintendo had not provided pre-launch review units for the console or launch software. The explanation reported at the time was that “important features and updates” would be available through a launch-day system update. Forbes also reported on the lack of pre-launch Switch 2 review units and noted that review access and embargo timing vary. Those reports describe the 2025 hardware launch; they do not establish a current policy or the review schedule for a later game.

Check these details before placing an order
- Review timing: Search for the specific game’s review schedule rather than relying on another game’s launch coverage.
- Bonus details: Confirm on the actual listing that a bonus exists and that you want it. Nintendo says an eShop bonus code is available only after payment is processed, no sooner than seven days before release.
- Cancellation deadline: For an eligible U.S. eShop preorder, the cancellation window ends when payment is processed seven days before release.
- Seller and format: Separate Nintendo eShop digital preorders from Nintendo Store physical pre-purchases and from purchases at other retailers; their terms may differ.
- Day-one readiness: For an eShop preorder, allow for the preload’s storage requirement and the small release-time update.
