A Virtual Game Card loaded on a console lets other users of that console play the purchased game or downloadable content, including offline after loading. An eligible card can be lent to another member of the purchaser’s Nintendo Account family group for up to 14 days. GameShare provides temporary access only for the GameChat session in which the software is shared. Nintendo Switch Online Family Membership extends subscription benefits to up to eight accounts in one family group, but it does not transfer ownership of purchased games.
The important distinction is between a game license, a temporary sharing session, and an account subscription. Use the option that matches whether players share a console, live in separate homes, need a short trial, or need online multiplayer and cloud features.

What each player actually gets
Nintendo’s sharing features answer different questions. A loaded Virtual Game Card is primarily a console-level permission. Lending is an account-to-account checkout with a time limit. GameShare is a live-session feature. Nintendo Switch Online Family Membership attaches service benefits to Nintendo Accounts in a family group, not to every profile that happens to use one console.
| Access route | Who can play or use it? | How long? | Connection and eligibility | Does it transfer ownership? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Virtual Game Card loaded on a console | Other users on that console | While the card remains loaded | Loading follows Nintendo’s console requirements; play can continue offline after loading | No. The purchase remains tied to the Nintendo Account that bought or redeemed it |
| Virtual Game Card loan | An eligible Nintendo Account family-group member | Up to 14 days, unless returned earlier | Local communication and internet are required for the lending process; some software is excluded | No. It is temporary access, not a new copy |
| GameShare | Recipients in the active GameChat session | Only for the GameChat session in which it was shared | A Nintendo Switch 2 must start the session; the software must support GameShare | No |
| Nintendo Switch Online Family Membership | Accounts in the purchaser’s Nintendo Account family group, up to eight accounts | While the membership and applicable feature remain active | Benefits apply only to supported games, services and selected content | No. It does not share purchased game ownership |
These routes can overlap. For example, one family can use a loaded card for children on the household console and use Family Membership for online play and cloud saves. Those are separate permissions, even when the same people benefit from both.

Virtual Game Cards: sharing on the same console
Nintendo treats purchased digital games and downloadable content as Virtual Game Cards. Once a card is loaded onto a console, users on that system can play the associated software. Nintendo’s official wording says a loaded card can be played while the console is offline and that other users on the console can also play the game or DLC.
This is the straightforward answer to “Can my child play my digital Switch game?” when the child uses the console holding the loaded card. The child does not need to own the game on a separate Nintendo Account. The purchase itself remains associated with the account that bought or redeemed it, so changing the user profile does not change ownership.
How the console-level permission works
- Purchase or redeem the digital game or DLC with the purchasing Nintendo Account.
- Use Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card management screen to load the card onto the intended console, following the on-screen pairing or system prompts.
- Let the other user start the software from their own profile on that console. The card must remain loaded for the console-level access to continue.
A Nintendo Account can use up to two consoles that can load its Virtual Game Cards. Moving a card, pairing another console or loading it for the first time can require the account and consoles to meet Nintendo’s system and connection requirements. The two-console allowance does not create two independently owned copies; it describes where the account can manage and load its cards.

What this option does not do
- It does not give every Nintendo Account its own permanent license.
- It does not automatically make the game playable on a different console where the card is not loaded.
- It does not move save data to another system. Save-data transfer and cloud backup are separate processes.
If two people want to play at the same time on separate consoles, a single loaded card is not a promise of simultaneous access. Check the title’s current Nintendo sharing behavior and use a second purchase when the game’s rules require it.
Lending a Virtual Game Card to a family member
Nintendo also allows eligible Virtual Game Cards to be lent to members of the same Nintendo Account family group. This is different from loading a card for other users on your own console: the borrower receives temporary access on the borrower’s console, subject to Nintendo’s lending rules.
Loan limits and conditions
- The borrower must be in the lender’s Nintendo Account family group.
- The loan lasts up to 14 days unless the lender returns the card sooner.
- The consoles need to be near each other for local communication during the lending process and connected to the internet as Nintendo requires.
- Nintendo describes a limit of up to three different loans at once and one card per borrower console.
- Some software cannot be lent. Eligibility is determined by the specific game or DLC, not by the fact that it is digital.
A loan is a checkout, not a gift. When the 14-day period ends or the card is returned, the borrower cannot continue playing through that loan. The borrower also does not become the owner of the software.
A practical lending sequence
- Confirm that both Nintendo Accounts belong to the same Nintendo Account family group.
- Check that the title is an eligible Virtual Game Card and that the lender and borrower consoles satisfy Nintendo’s local-communication and internet requirements.
- Start the lend action from the Virtual Game Card controls and select the eligible family-group member and borrower console shown by Nintendo’s prompts.
- Complete the local connection and internet checks on both systems.
- Record the return date. The maximum period is 14 days, but the lender can return the card earlier.
Save data and DLC details
Lending the card does not move the lender’s save data to the borrower’s console. Nintendo treats save-data movement as a separate operation, and supported cloud backup is a Nintendo Switch Online benefit rather than an automatic part of lending.

GameShare: temporary play during GameChat
GameShare is designed for a shared play session, not a standing loan. A Nintendo Switch 2 system must initiate the session. Compatible software can be shared with supported Switch 2 or Switch systems according to the game’s requirements.
Recipients can play the shared software only during the GameChat session in which it was shared. When that session ends, the GameShare permission ends as well. This answers “Can I keep playing a shared game after GameShare ends?”: not through that GameShare session.

System roles
- Host: a Nintendo Switch 2 starts the GameShare session.
- Recipients: compatible Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch systems receive the software while the session is active.
- Switch-only limitation: a Nintendo Switch system can receive only locally shared compatible games from a Nintendo Switch 2.
GameShare compatibility is title-specific. Nintendo also says parental software restrictions are honored when GameShare is used, so a child’s account settings can limit what appears or can be launched.

Online license on Switch 2
Nintendo’s Japan support guidance describes an “online license” setting for Switch 2. With that setting enabled, the purchasing user can play purchased downloadable software or DLC on an internet-connected console without loading the Virtual Game Card. Other users cannot use that online license.
The console must connect to the internet when the software launches. Nintendo’s instructions also warn that an extended disconnection can interrupt play, and online-license play cannot be used simultaneously across multiple consoles.
This feature is documented for Japan, so menu names, availability and terms may differ in other regions. Treat it as an account-specific alternative to loading a card, not as a family-sharing method. For local arrangements outside Japan, check the current regional Nintendo support instructions before relying on the setting.
What Nintendo Switch Online Family Membership covers
A Family Membership provides Nintendo Switch Online service to everyone in the purchaser’s Nintendo Account family group, up to eight Nintendo Account users. Coverage follows membership in that account group, not physical proximity to the purchaser’s console. An unrelated profile on the same machine is not covered merely because it uses the machine.
Each covered account receives its own account-level service access. If the purchaser leaves the family group, Nintendo says the other members lose access to the service until they are covered again.
Standard membership versus Expansion Pack
| Tier | Benefits described by Nintendo | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch Online Family | Supported online multiplayer, Save Data Cloud for supported games, selected NES, Super NES and Game Boy classics, Nintendo Music and member offers | Online play, cloud backup and classic-game availability depend on compatibility and supported titles |
| Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Family | All standard benefits, additional classic-game collections, selected DLC, GameCube classics and certain Switch 2-specific benefits such as selected Switch 2 Edition upgrade packs | Catalogs, DLC and Switch 2 features are selected offerings; compatibility and the base game requirement still apply |
Expansion Pack is therefore an expanded subscription catalog, not a replacement for buying every game. A selected DLC benefit may require the corresponding base game, and access can depend on the membership remaining active and the title remaining supported.
What Family Membership does not include
- It does not place purchased digital games into every family member’s Virtual Game Card library.
- It does not turn a family member into the owner of a game bought by someone else.
- It does not guarantee cloud saves for every game or online multiplayer for every mode.
- It does not make every DLC pack part of the subscription; Nintendo identifies selected DLC and selected titles.
Which option fits common household situations?
A child uses the parent’s console
Load the parent’s Virtual Game Card on that console. Other users on the console can play, including offline after loading. Add the child’s Nintendo Account to the family group if the household also wants that account to receive Family Membership benefits such as supported online play or cloud saves.

Family members use separate consoles
First check whether the game is an eligible Virtual Game Card. If so, a family-group loan can provide up to 14 days of access, subject to the local connection, internet and simultaneous-loan limits. A Family Membership alone does not provide the purchased game.

Friends want to try a game together
Use GameShare when the title supports it and a Nintendo Switch 2 can host the GameChat session. Everyone’s access ends with that session, so it is not a substitute for buying or lending the game.
The goal is online play and cloud backup
Choose the Nintendo Switch Online tier that contains the needed service. Standard Family covers supported online multiplayer and Save Data Cloud; Expansion Pack adds selected catalogs, DLC and Switch 2-specific benefits. Verify that each game is supported.
One account manages several consoles
Nintendo allows an account to use up to two consoles that can load its Virtual Game Cards. Decide which console should hold the card, and remember that an online-license setup documented for Japan is restricted to the purchasing user and requires an internet connection at launch.
Checks to make before sharing
- Confirm the exact Nintendo Account family-group membership for every intended borrower.
- Check the game’s current Virtual Game Card lending and GameShare eligibility.
- Update both consoles and sign in with the accounts Nintendo requires for loading, lending or GameChat.
- For lending, put the consoles near each other and connect them to the internet during the setup.
- For GameShare, make sure the host is using Nintendo Switch 2 and that the recipient system is compatible with the title.
- For subscription features, verify that the specific game supports online multiplayer or Save Data Cloud and that any DLC is listed as included.
- Keep save-data plans separate from game-access plans; loading or lending a card does not migrate saves.
Common problems and what they mean
The other profile cannot start the game
Check that the Virtual Game Card is actually loaded on that console and that the profile is using the console where the card resides. If the card was lent, confirm that the borrower is in the same family group and that the loan has not expired or been returned.
The lending option is missing
The title may be excluded from lending, the accounts may not be in the same family group, or the consoles may not meet Nintendo’s local-communication and internet requirements. Check the card’s eligibility rather than assuming every digital purchase can be lent.
GameShare stops working
GameShare access is tied to the GameChat session. If the session ended, the recipient’s temporary permission ended with it. Start a new compatible session or use a purchase or eligible family-group loan for continuing access.
A family member has no online benefits
Membership follows Nintendo Account family-group status. Confirm that the account is one of the covered accounts, that the membership is active, and that the game or feature supports the requested benefit. Being on the same physical console is not enough.
Play is interrupted after going offline
A loaded Virtual Game Card can be played offline after loading. Online-license play is different: Nintendo’s Japan guidance requires internet at launch and warns that extended disconnection can interrupt it. Use the correct license method for the account and region.
Regional and compatibility caveats
The operational limits described here come from Nintendo’s official US/Americas guidance and family-facing materials, with the online-license explanation from Nintendo Japan. Local labels, availability and terms can vary. Nintendo also states that Switch 2 supports many, but not all, Switch products and features.
Before promising access for a particular title, check its current compatibility, whether it supports GameShare, whether its Virtual Game Card can be lent, and whether the required online, cloud or DLC feature is supported. These checks matter more than the console model alone.
