A Nintendo Switch 2 Edition bundles the original game with its upgrade pack; a free update is a separate, title-specific change to the Switch game.
What’s the difference between a Switch 2 Edition, an upgrade pack, and a free update?
| Term | What it means | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 Edition | A bundle of the original Nintendo Switch game and its upgrade pack. The pack adds title-specific features or content designed for Switch 2. | The Edition itself, or the original game plus its separate upgrade pack. |
| Upgrade pack | The add-on that upgrades a specific supported Switch game for Switch 2. It is not the base game. | The original game, physically or digitally, and the pack. The pack may be paid or included for eligible members with selected titles. |
| Free update | A no-cost update to a selected Switch game. Nintendo treats free updates and paid upgrades as distinct paths, and what changes depends on the game. | The game and its update; check the title’s notice for the actual changes. |
Nintendo Support describes a Switch 2 Edition as a bundle of the original Switch game and its upgrade pack. The original game remains playable on Nintendo Switch, but the Edition’s additional features and content require Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo’s upgrade instructions explain the bundle and the separate-pack route.

Which option should you choose?
If you already own the original game
Search for that specific title’s upgrade pack in Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Store, or at a retailer. Nintendo says owners of either a physical or digital copy can obtain the pack separately. If you buy a retail download code, redeem it through Nintendo eShop. Before paying, confirm the pack matches your game and region, and check whether it is included with an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.
If you do not own the original game
Consider the full Nintendo Switch 2 Edition: it bundles the base game and upgrade pack. Check the listing carefully so you are buying the Edition rather than an upgrade pack that assumes you already own the game. If you prefer a cartridge, verify that a physical Edition is available for that title. Nintendo says Switch 2 Edition packaging displays a Nintendo Switch 2 logo and additional information on the front; digital listings include “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition” in the title. See Nintendo UK’s Edition guide for identification details.

If you saw an announcement about a free update
Do not assume it is the same as an upgrade pack. Nintendo distinguishes free updates to selected Switch games from paid upgrades for selected games. Read the notice for the exact title to see which improvements or features the update provides; the word “update” alone does not establish that a Switch 2 Edition pack is included. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance and Switch 2 transfer guide explain these separate options.
Can Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack cover the upgrade?
Selected upgrade packs are available at no additional cost to active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members who own the original game. This applies only to qualifying packs and titles, not every Switch 2 upgrade. Check the current membership benefits and the game’s regional Nintendo listing before relying on eligibility; selected examples on Nintendo’s pages are not a complete or permanent catalog.

What to check before buying
- Whether you own the base game: An upgrade pack is for a game you already own; buying the pack alone does not provide the original game.
- The exact title and region: Match the pack to your game and check the listing for any stated base-game requirements.
- What is included: Confirm whether the desired features come from a paid pack, a qualifying membership benefit, or a free update.
- Your console’s compatibility: Nintendo Switch 2 supports compatible physical and digital Switch games, but some games may be unsupported or not fully compatible. Check Nintendo’s compatibility information; for a game published by another company, Nintendo directs players to that publisher for game-specific details.
- The current regional listing: Prices, availability, physical editions, and membership eligibility can vary. Verify them on the listing for your region rather than relying on an old price or a title example.
Upgrade pack installed, but the features are missing?
Installing the pack may not be the only step. Nintendo says an update to the Switch game may also be required before you can access Switch 2 Edition features. Follow this order:
- Connect the console to the internet and install any available system update.
- Update the game itself, in addition to confirming that the upgrade pack is installed.
- If you use a digital copy, make sure the relevant virtual game card is loaded on the console you are playing.
- If the pack was preordered, check that it has been released.
- Restart the console and check the game’s title screen for the Edition features.
Nintendo’s troubleshooting steps for missing Switch 2 Edition features cover these checks.
