No. Nintendo Switch 2’s GameChat open-access period ended on March 31, 2026. As of October 8, 2026, a Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to use GameChat, according to Nintendo’s current US membership overview.

What the March 31 deadline meant

Nintendo offered GameChat without a Nintendo Switch Online membership from June 5, 2025, through March 31, 2026, according to Nintendo Support. The date in the headline is March 31, 2026; the free-access offer has expired.

Nintendo’s April 3, 2025 Switch 2 announcement said a membership would be required afterward. That requirement now applies. Nintendo does not establish a separate GameChat access plan in these sources.

What GameChat does—and what you need

GameChat is a Nintendo Switch 2 feature for talking with friends, sharing game screens, video chatting, and playing together. Nintendo Support lists a Switch 2 system, a persistent internet connection, up-to-date system software, and a registered phone number among the setup requirements. A Nintendo Switch Online membership is also required now.

Players need to approve one another for GameChat. Nintendo says users under 16 have additional parental-control requirements: parents or guardians must set up parental controls through the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls smart-device application. Families should follow Nintendo’s current support guidance for the child’s account circumstances.

Voice chat, video chat, and screen sharing

The console’s built-in microphone supports voice chat, so a separate microphone or camera is not required for basic voice chat. Video chat requires a compatible USB camera. Nintendo’s separately sold Nintendo Switch 2 Camera is one option; Nintendo says other USB cameras may work but does not guarantee compatibility. A camera test is available in system settings.
