Nintendo Switch 2 launched at $449.99 in the U.S.—the highest nominal launch price for a mainstream Nintendo console. But the “since the SNES” comparison needs an inflation qualifier: the NES and SNES were more expensive in today’s money. Online criticism of the price, premium games and paid Welcome Tour is genuine, yet Nintendo’s sales figures show that frustration has not translated into rejection.
The Switch 2 price, launch date and upcoming increase
Nintendo Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025, at a U.S. MSRP of $449.99 before sales tax. The Mario Kart World bundle cost $499.99 and included a digital copy of the game.

The base package included the console, Joy-Con 2 controllers, dock, grip, straps, HDMI cable, AC adapter and USB-C charging cable. The bundle was not a different, more expensive console model: its additional $50 represented the included game.
There is also a new deadline for U.S. buyers. Nintendo has announced that the MSRP will rise from $449.99 to $499.99 on September 1, 2026. Canada’s price is scheduled to increase from $629.99 to $679.99, while the European price is scheduled to rise from €469.99 to €499.99. U.S. prices exclude sales tax; European prices generally include VAT. These changes were announced as responses to changing market conditions, without a detailed public cost breakdown.

Is Switch 2 really Nintendo’s most expensive console?
There are two different answers, depending on whether you mean the price printed on the box or the price adjusted for inflation.
Nominal launch prices
| System | U.S. launch price |
|---|---|
| NES | $199 |
| SNES | $199.99 |
| Nintendo 64 | $199.99 |
| GameCube | $199.99 |
| Wii | $249.99 |
| Wii U | $299.99 / $349.99 |
| Original Switch | $299.99 |
| Switch 2 | $449.99 |
In sticker-price terms, Switch 2 is clearly Nintendo’s most expensive mainstream console launch. It costs $150 more than the original Switch, a 50% nominal increase.
That comparison is not perfectly like-for-like. Switch 2 is a substantially revised hybrid system with a larger display, 256GB of internal storage, upgraded processing, new controllers and additional features. It is also backward-compatible with compatible Switch games, making it partly an upgrade platform rather than a clean generational reset. Even so, the price increase is large enough to explain why many fans reacted negatively.
Inflation-adjusted prices
The historical ranking changes when older prices are converted into approximately 2025 dollars. One comparison estimated the following figures:
| System | Original price | Approx. 2025 dollars |
|---|---|---|
| NES | $199 | $602 |
| SNES | $199.99 | $472 |
| Switch 2 | $449.99 | $449.99 |
| Wii U, 32GB | $349.99 | $491 |
| Wii U, 8GB | $299.99 | $420 |
| Nintendo 64 | $199.99 | $399 |
| Wii | $249.99 | $400 |
| Original Switch | $299.99 | $363 |
| GameCube | $199.99 | $359 |
Those estimates come from Nintendo Life’s comparison and should not be treated as an immutable ranking. Results vary with the inflation calculator, reference year, launch configuration and whether handheld systems are included. The Wii U also had two configurations.
The safest conclusion is: Switch 2 has Nintendo’s highest sticker price ever, but the NES and SNES were more expensive after inflation. Calling it Nintendo’s priciest console “since the SNES” is broadly defensible only when “priciest” means inflation-adjusted and the comparison is limited to the relevant home-console configurations.
Why fans objected to the price
A 50% increase over the original Switch
The original Switch launched at $299.99. Moving to $449.99 means the entry price rose by $150 before tax. For families and existing Switch owners, that is a straightforward and uncomfortable comparison, even if the new hardware offers meaningful improvements.
Games can cost around $80
Launch-period criticism also focused on games such as Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza, which were widely associated with approximately $80 pricing. However, Nintendo’s pricing guidance makes clear that prices can differ between physical and digital editions. There is no single universal price for every Switch 2 game, so buyers should check each listing.

A paid system tutorial
Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour became another flashpoint because it was sold separately despite functioning partly as an interactive hardware tutorial and technology demonstration. Consumers who had already paid a premium for the console saw the additional charge as symbolic of Nintendo charging extra for features that might traditionally have been treated as part of the hardware experience.
The ownership cost can grow beyond the box
The base system is not automatically an expensive purchase for every buyer, but different households may need different extras:
- Storage: Switch 2 includes 256GB, but additional storage requires a microSD Express card rather than a standard microSD card.
- Games: Buyers may need one or more premium-priced first-party titles.
- Online features: Nintendo stated that GameChat would require Nintendo Switch Online after its free-access period. Current membership terms and prices should be checked on Nintendo’s official service page.
- Camera: A camera is optional for video features in GameChat and compatible games.
- Controllers: Extra Joy-Con 2 controllers or a Pro Controller matter mainly for households planning local multiplayer or preferring an alternative control setup.
None of those accessories is mandatory for every owner. A cartridge-focused solo player may need little beyond the console and games, while a family buying digital games and multiplayer equipment can face a much higher total.
What buyers get for the money
Nintendo is not selling the original Switch with a new name. Switch 2 includes upgraded performance, a larger display, 256GB of internal storage, improved visuals, new Joy-Con 2 functionality including mouse controls, GameChat and GameShare features, and TV output of up to 4K and up to 120fps in supported scenarios.

It also plays compatible Switch games, although compatibility is not necessarily universal for every title or accessory. Some existing Switch controllers and peripherals can be used wirelessly, subject to Nintendo’s compatibility rules. For owners whose main complaints are slow loading, lower performance or an aging display, those improvements may justify the cost. For owners satisfied with their existing library, they may not.
Does “people are not happy” accurately describe the market?
It accurately describes a visible online backlash, but it is too broad if presented as a measured view of all Nintendo customers.
Editorial coverage and social-media discussion documented complaints about the $449.99 hardware price, approximately $80 games and the paid Welcome Tour. The 50% increase over the original Switch is also easy for consumers to understand. However, social posts show that people complained; they do not establish what percentage of all potential buyers were unhappy. The available evidence does not amount to a representative consumer poll.
The sales data provide important counterevidence:
- Nintendo said Switch 2 sold more than 3.5 million units in its first four days.
- Nintendo later reported more than 15 million units sold through to consumers in its first six months.
- Nintendo described it as the fastest-selling dedicated platform in its history.
Nintendo also reported 5.82 million units sold into the market during the first quarter. That is a sell-in figure, while the 15-million figure is sell-through to consumers; the two should not be treated as interchangeable.

The most accurate reading is therefore: the price triggered loud online criticism, but the sales data show that the criticism did not prevent a record-setting launch. People can dislike the price and still decide that Nintendo’s games, hybrid format and upgraded hardware are worth buying.

Buy the base system
This is the clearest option for buyers who want Switch 2 hardware but do not want Mario Kart World. It also makes the most sense for price-sensitive buyers who plan to purchase games selectively.
Choose the Mario Kart World bundle
The bundle costs $499.99 and includes the game. It is the better comparison for anyone who would buy Mario Kart World anyway. It should not be described simply as a $50 more expensive console, because the bundle includes software.
Consider the upgrade if you already own a Switch
An upgrade is easier to justify if you want improved performance, faster loading, higher-resolution output or Switch 2 exclusives. Compatibility with compatible Switch games also means the new system can carry forward part of an existing library.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. That is a judgment call, not a prediction that a discount or revised model will definitely appear.
Factor in the September deadline
For U.S. buyers who have already decided to purchase, the scheduled September 1 price increase changes the calculation: the base system is due to become $50 more expensive. Buyers who are undecided should not treat the current $449.99 price as permanent, while also remembering that retailer pricing and promotions can differ from Nintendo’s MSRP.
The verdict
Switch 2 is unusually expensive by Nintendo standards, and the backlash is understandable. Its $449.99 launch price was 50% higher than the original Switch, premium software added to the perceived cost and even the paid Welcome Tour became a symbol of nickel-and-diming.
But the historical headline needs precision. Switch 2 is Nintendo’s most expensive mainstream console by sticker price, not its most expensive after inflation. The NES and SNES cost more in real terms, and the Wii U’s premium configuration complicates the ranking further.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsNor did online anger equal market rejection. Nintendo’s reported sales show that millions bought the system despite the price. The fairest summary is that Nintendo made Switch 2 expensive enough to upset fans, but not expensive enough to stop them buying it. With the U.S. price scheduled to reach $499.99 on September 1, 2026, that controversy is about to become even more relevant for late buyers.
