“The program can’t start because whohasres.dll is missing from your computer.”

If whohasres.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, the problem is usually a damaged or incomplete Autodesk installation rather than Windows itself. Public file records associate this application-private resource DLL with whohasRes Application, especially older AutoCAD 2007 installations.

The safest repair is to identify the Autodesk product that calls the file, then use its original Repair or Reinstall option. Do not download a replacement DLL and copy it into System32.

Which fix applies to you

Use this list before changing anything:

  • The error names AutoCAD or another Autodesk program: Start with the Autodesk repair procedure below.
  • The error began after uninstalling, cleaning, or updating AutoCAD: Repair or reinstall that same Autodesk release.
  • Your antivirus recently quarantined a file: Check quarantine, but restore the file only when it is clearly associated with the installed Autodesk product.
  • The message says “The specified module could not be found”: The named DLL may exist while one of its dependencies is missing. Check the full application error and installation logs.
  • You are running AutoCAD 2007 on current Windows: Expect possible compatibility or installation-media problems. Use the original licensed media or legitimate Autodesk installer.
  • Several unrelated Windows programs are failing: Check Windows component integrity with DISM and SFC.
  • The error identifies a driver or graphics component instead of Autodesk: Follow the driver section rather than copying whohasres.dll.
  • The Autodesk program was intentionally removed: Remove the leftover shortcut or startup reference, or reinstall the program that still expects the file.

What whohasres.dll belongs to

whohasres.dll is described as whohasRes Resource DLL, part of whohasRes Application. Public inventories associate it with Autodesk software and particularly AutoCAD 2007.

There is no verified evidence that it is a normal Windows component. It should not ordinarily be stored in:

C:WindowsSystem32

or:

C:WindowsSysWOW64

The exact version, architecture, checksum, and installation path are not confirmed by an official Autodesk file manifest. Public metadata also conflicts about whether particular copies are 32-bit or 64-bit. Treat those details as unverified.

The important distinction is that this is probably an application-private file. The Autodesk program expects to find the DLL in its own installation directory or through its installer configuration. A copy placed in a Windows system directory may be ignored, create a version conflict, or cause a different failure.

Fix 1: Repair the Autodesk installation

This is the first fix for most whohasres.dll errors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows 11 and Windows 10

  1. Press Windows and type Control Panel.
  2. Open Control Panel.
  3. Select Programs.
  4. Select Programs and Features.
  5. Find the affected Autodesk product, such as AutoCAD.
  6. Select it once.
  7. Click Uninstall/Change.
  8. Wait for the Autodesk maintenance installer to open.
  9. Select Repair.
  10. Follow the prompts and allow the installer to finish.
  11. Restart Windows.
  12. Start the Autodesk program again.

Autodesk repair mode is designed to restore missing product files and related installation information. It is safer than replacing one DLL manually because it restores the file that belongs to that particular release.

If Repair does not work

Repeat the same steps, but choose Reinstall instead of Repair.

Reinstall uses the original installation source to replace the installed files. It may request the original disc, setup files, cached installer package, or access to the legitimate Autodesk installation source.

After reinstalling:

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Start the Autodesk program from its normal shortcut.
  3. Confirm whether the same executable produces the error.
  4. Check whether the error now names a different missing file.

If the installer cannot find its source files, do not substitute a DLL archive. Locate the original licensed Autodesk media or the legitimate installer associated with the product.

How to confirm that you repaired the right product

An error can be caused by an old shortcut pointing to an Autodesk installation that you thought had been removed.

Right-click the shortcut that produces the error and select Properties. Check the Target field. Note:

  • The executable name
  • The installation folder
  • The Autodesk product and release
  • Whether the path points to an old drive or backup location

Use that product entry in Programs and Features. Repairing a different Autodesk release will not necessarily repair the executable that is failing.

Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file

Security software can remove or quarantine an application file after a scan, an update, or a change in detection rules. This is possible, but the filename alone does not prove that a quarantined copy is safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows Security

  1. Press Windows and type Windows Security.
  2. Open Windows Security.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Look for an event involving whohasres.dll or the Autodesk installation folder.
  6. Open the event details.
  7. Confirm the affected path and the associated Autodesk executable.

Do not disable antivirus protection merely to accept an unverified DLL. If the file is clearly part of the installed Autodesk product and the installer source is trusted, use the security product’s restore option according to its instructions. Then run the Autodesk Repair procedure so the installation is rebuilt consistently.

If the security software identifies the file as malware rather than a potentially unwanted or mistaken detection, do not restore it. Remove the damaged installation and reinstall Autodesk from a legitimate source.

Fix 3: Reinstall the affected Autodesk product

Use a full reinstall when:

  • Repair completes but the error remains
  • The Autodesk product no longer appears correctly in Programs and Features
  • Setup files are missing or damaged
  • Several Autodesk files are missing
  • The installation folder was manually deleted
  • The program fails during startup with multiple missing components

Before uninstalling, save any custom templates, profiles, plug-ins, or user-created files that you need. Then:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs and Features.
  3. Select the affected Autodesk product.
  4. Click Uninstall/Change.
  5. Follow the Autodesk removal prompts.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Run the original licensed installer as an administrator.
  8. Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
  9. Complete the installation.
  10. Restart Windows again.
  11. Start the program and test the same workflow that previously failed.

For an old release such as AutoCAD 2007, the installer may depend on original media or cached setup files. A modern Windows version may also expose compatibility, licensing, or prerequisite issues that are separate from whohasres.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

A 32-bit application generally needs the DLL built for that application, even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. Do not replace the file with a copy from another Autodesk release merely because the filename matches.

  • MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE

To check your Windows architecture:

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select About.
  4. Read System type.

This tells you whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit. It does not prove the architecture of whohasres.dll or the Autodesk executable.

To check the program path, right-click the application shortcut, choose Properties, and inspect Target. A legacy program may be installed under a product-specific folder rather than a Windows system folder.

If AutoCAD 2007 fails only on a newer Windows release, try the program’s compatibility settings:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click the Autodesk executable or shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Compatibility tab.
  4. Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
  5. Choose a Windows version appropriate to the program’s age.
  6. Select Run this program as an administrator only if the application requires it.
  7. Select Apply, then OK.
  8. Test the program.

Compatibility mode cannot recreate a missing DLL. Use it only after repairing or reinstalling the Autodesk application.

Fix 5: Investigate a missing dependency

The message “The specified module could not be found” can be misleading. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by whohasres.dll, even when the named file is present.

First, record the complete error:

  • Which program displayed it
  • The full wording
  • The executable path
  • Whether the error appears at launch or during a particular operation
  • Whether the Autodesk product was recently updated or repaired

Do not assume that Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET supplies whohasres.dll. There is no verified evidence that this Autodesk resource DLL is a Microsoft runtime file.

If the complete message names a Microsoft runtime, use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable downloads and select the architecture required by the application. Installing a runtime will not replace the Autodesk DLL itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components when broader symptoms exist

DISM and SFC are not the primary repair for whohasres.dll, because the file is not identified as a protected Windows system file. Use them when Windows itself is malfunctioning, the Autodesk installer fails because of operating-system corruption, or several unrelated system components are damaged.

Run DISM first

  1. Press Windows.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the operation to finish.
  2. Restart Windows if requested.

Run System File Checker

Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows, then retry the Autodesk repair or application.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. The commands repair Windows components; they do not provide a verified Autodesk copy of whohasres.dll.

When you are repeatedly hunting through Windows components and rerunning SFC/DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention; its repair action is handled by the full version, while reinstalling the Autodesk program remains the definitive fix for this file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 7: Update a driver only when the error identifies one

There is no verified evidence connecting whohasres.dll to a particular graphics, audio, chipset, or printer driver. Do not update drivers merely because AutoCAD is involved.

Use Device Manager only when the full error, Event Viewer, or Autodesk startup failure identifies a device or driver problem.

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category for the affected device.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Install a driver only when Windows finds an appropriate package.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Test Autodesk again.

For graphics problems, obtain the driver from the computer or graphics-device manufacturer when possible. Avoid installing a random driver package because it happens to mention a similar DLL.

If identifying the correct driver means checking many device entries and release packages manually, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; the driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is still unrelated to the definitive Autodesk repair when whohasres.dll is the missing application file.

Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL fix

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A resource DLL normally does not need registration.

Do not start with:

regsvr32 whohasres.dll

If you run it and receive an error saying that DllRegisterServer was not found, that confirms registration is not the appropriate repair. It does not mean you need a different copy of the DLL.

The correct actions are to repair or reinstall the Autodesk product and restore its application-private files.

  • Leave the actual Autodesk installation incomplete
  • Put the wrong architecture in a system search path
  • Create version conflicts
  • Hide the original installation problem
  • Cause the program to load an unrelated copy

A DLL should come from the installer for the exact Autodesk product and release that requires it.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe

Random DLL download sites can provide:

  • Malware or tampered files
  • A file from a different Autodesk release
  • The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
  • A file with incompatible dependencies
  • A copy that does not match the executable’s expected version

Even when a downloaded file removes the first pop-up, it may leave the installation damaged or introduce a second failure. Use the original Autodesk installer, legitimate Autodesk account resources, or licensed installation media instead.

If AutoCAD 2007 cannot be repaired

AutoCAD 2007 is a legacy release. On current Windows versions, repair may fail because:

  • The original installation media is unavailable
  • Cached setup files were removed
  • Licensing components no longer work correctly
  • The installer is incompatible with the current Windows environment
  • The installation was partially removed
  • A required dependency is missing

Try the following in order:

  1. Locate the original licensed installation media.
  2. Copy or access the installer from a local, trusted location.
  3. Run the installer as administrator.
  4. Use Repair first.
  5. Use Reinstall if Repair fails.
  6. Test the program in compatibility mode.
  7. Record any new error message exactly.

If the legacy program still will not run, the remaining issue may be unsupported software, licensing, or another missing dependency rather than whohasres.dll itself. Do not mix files from a newer Autodesk release into the old installation.

Last-resort recovery options

System Restore

Use System Restore when the error began immediately after a driver, cleanup operation, or software change and a suitable restore point exists.

  1. Press Windows.
  2. Type Create a restore point.
  3. Open the result.
  4. Select System Restore.
  5. Choose a restore point from before the failure.
  6. Review the affected programs.
  7. Start the restore.

System Restore does not replace a proper Autodesk reinstall and may not restore personal files.

Clean Autodesk reinstall

If Repair and Reinstall both fail, remove the damaged Autodesk product, restart Windows, and reinstall from the original legitimate source. Back up custom Autodesk data first.

If the same error returns immediately after a clean reinstall, capture the exact message, executable path, Windows version, Autodesk release, and installer result. That information distinguishes a missing file from a dependency, compatibility, or licensing problem.

FAQ

Is whohasres.dll part of Windows?

No verified evidence identifies it as a Windows component. It is associated publicly with whohasRes Application and Autodesk software, particularly AutoCAD 2007.

Which program installed whohasres.dll?

The clearest public association is Autodesk software, especially AutoCAD 2007. Other Autodesk releases may use related components, but the exact product must be confirmed from the error path and installed-program list.

Should I download whohasres.dll?

No. Repair or reinstall the Autodesk program from its legitimate installer. A random DLL may be malicious, mismatched, or the wrong architecture.

Should I put it in System32?

No. This appears to be an application-private DLL. Restore it through the Autodesk installer in the directory used by the affected program.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does regsvr32 fix this error?

Normally no. A resource DLL generally does not expose the registration function that regsvr32 requires.

Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Only when the complete error identifies that runtime or a related dependency. Those packages do not normally provide whohasres.dll.

Is the file 32-bit or 64-bit?

Public records conflict, and no official Autodesk manifest confirms the architecture. Treat the local Autodesk installation and executable as authoritative. Do not substitute a file from another release.

Can SFC restore it?

SFC repairs protected Windows system files. It is not the primary way to restore an Autodesk application DLL. Run DISM and SFC only when broader Windows corruption or installer failure justifies them.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the error remains after reinstalling?

Check the exact executable path, antivirus history, installation-media integrity, compatibility settings, and any new dependency named by the complete error. Persistent failures with AutoCAD 2007 may reflect legacy compatibility or licensing issues rather than this DLL alone.
