Nintendo introduced Nintendo Switch 2 with its first-look trailer in January 2025, calling it the successor to Nintendo Switch and saying it would launch sometime that year. The announcement also confirmed support for Switch 2 games and compatible physical and digital Switch games, while warning that some original Switch titles might not be supported or fully compatible. The trailer did not announce a launch date or price; Nintendo supplied those details later.
When did Nintendo announce Switch 2?
Nintendo published its first-look trailer and accompanying announcement in January 2025. Nintendo Australia dated its announcement January 17; Nintendo’s U.S. page displays January 16. The announcement described Switch 2 as the successor to Nintendo Switch and said it would be released in 2025, without specifying a day or price.

What did the first Switch 2 trailer show?
The official first-look video is the evidence for what Nintendo showed on screen: a first visual introduction to the new console and its controllers, including how the system and controllers appear to change from the original Switch. The trailer is a reveal video, not a complete hardware specification sheet. Nintendo’s accompanying announcement supplied the 2025 release window and game-compatibility information; it did not provide launch pricing or a launch date.

Do not confuse details Nintendo published in later launch coverage with information disclosed in this first trailer. For example, the 7.9-inch 1080p screen, 256 GB of storage, and magnetic Joy-Con 2 controllers were described in Nintendo’s June 5, 2025 launch coverage, rather than the January first-look announcement. Nintendo’s launch-day announcement contains those later hardware details.
Will Switch 2 play original Nintendo Switch games?
Nintendo said Switch 2 would play games made exclusively for Switch 2 as well as compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. Compatibility is not universal: the January announcement cautioned that some Switch games might not be supported or fully compatible. That wording does not guarantee that every game, accessory, or feature from the original system will work in the same way.
The announcement’s compatibility statement is in Nintendo Australia’s first-look notice. For a particular game, check Nintendo’s current compatibility information rather than assuming support based only on its availability for the original Switch.

When did Switch 2 come out, and what did it cost?
Nintendo announced the actual U.S. launch date and prices on April 2, 2025—nearly three months after the first-look trailer. The console launched June 5, 2025, at a U.S. suggested retail price of $449.99. A $499.99 U.S. bundle included a digital copy of Mario Kart World. Those are launch-announcement prices, not prices stated in the January trailer announcement, and they do not establish current retailer pricing.

In that April announcement, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa described the system as “the next step in at-home gaming that can be taken on the go based on eight years of play and discovery that began with Nintendo Switch.” This was a later launch announcement quote, not a statement in the first-look trailer. See Nintendo of America’s April 2 announcement for the U.S. date and launch pricing.
What happened after launch?
Nintendo said Switch 2 sold more than 3.5 million units worldwide in its first four days after launch, based on Nintendo internal data. The company also called it the fastest-selling Nintendo game system ever. Both the sales figure and record description are Nintendo’s claims, reported June 11, 2025; they were not part of the January reveal. Nintendo’s June 11 announcement gives the attribution and timeframe.

GameChat and camera details came later
Nintendo’s April announcement also described GameChat, including group chats of up to 12 people and video chat for up to four people when using a compatible USB-C camera. The camera is relevant to video chat, not a requirement for basic console use. Nintendo said GameChat would not require membership through March 31, 2026, with Nintendo Switch Online membership required afterward. Because that cutoff has passed, check Nintendo’s current terms and regional availability before relying on the service details.
These communication features and terms were announced after the first trailer. They are covered in Nintendo’s April 2 launch announcement.
