Yes. Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con 2 controllers attach to the console with a magnetic connector, replacing the original Switch’s rail-slide design. Nintendo confirmed the feature in its April 2, 2025 announcement, so the “reportedly” framing is no longer necessary.

Does Switch 2 use rails or magnets for Joy-Cons?

Switch 2 uses magnets to attach Joy-Con 2. Nintendo says the controllers connect to the system with a “snap.” By contrast, original Switch Joy-Con slide onto the original console using rails. Nintendo’s console and accessory comparison identifies the magnetic connector and rail attachment as distinct designs.

Nintendo’s UK support FAQ says magnetic force keeps Joy-Con 2 securely attached during normal handheld play. That is a qualitative description, not a published force measurement or durability rating.

Can original Switch Joy-Con attach to Switch 2?

No: Nintendo describes original Joy-Con as wireless controllers for Switch 2, not as controllers that physically attach to its magnetic connector. The original controllers use the rail interface designed for the original Switch, while Joy-Con 2 is made for Switch 2’s magnetic connection. Nintendo’s April 2, 2025 announcement confirms wireless use of original Switch Joy-Con and Pro Controllers with Switch 2.

Joy-Con™ 2 (L)/(R) Blue/Light Yellow
  • These updated Joy-Con 2 controllers have a color scheme inspired by Deep Cut from the Splatoon franchise. They have HD rumble, easy-to-use motion and mouse controls, and a C Button for easy GameChat* access (available in compatible games).

In short, wireless compatibility and physical attachment are separate. You can use original Joy-Con wirelessly with Switch 2, but Nintendo’s compatibility statement does not mean they dock onto the new console.

What should you know about the magnetic connection?

  • Keep the connection area clear. Nintendo’s safety guidance warns that foreign objects around the magnetic connection can cause damage or unexpected detachment.
  • Joy-Con 2 is a larger design. Nintendo’s comparison notes that Joy-Con 2 is larger than original Joy-Con; it does not provide comparative measurements in the cited comparison.
  • Charging is a separate question from attachment. Nintendo says Joy-Con 2 can charge through the console or the separately sold Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip. The grip is an accessory, not the console’s attachment mechanism. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 technical specifications and Switch 2 accessories page.

Nintendo has not published a numerical magnetic-force rating or a durability figure in these materials, so claims about a specific pull strength or guaranteed resistance to detachment are not established.
