That does not mean every country ran out or every buyer missed out. These are historical launch-period disclosures, not a report on current stock.
What happened when Switch 2 launched?
Nintendo said Switch 2 sold more than 3.5 million units worldwide during the four days after its June 5, 2025 release, calling it the fastest-selling Nintendo game system ever. The launch figure was based on Nintendo’s internal sales data. Nintendo’s June 11, 2025 release reported the result.

That strong start was followed by continued demand. Nintendo reported more than 6 million units of global sell-through during the seven weeks after launch in its August 2025 hardware sell-through presentation.

Did Switch 2 have shortages at launch?
Yes, in many countries. Nintendo’s August disclosure described demand exceeding supply in many countries after launch. In its November 2025 investor report, Nintendo said shortages persisted in some regions because demand had exceeded expectations. The report did not establish that every country experienced a shortage or provide a country-by-country timeline.

Nintendo’s November report stated: “However, as we mentioned prior to launch, demand has exceeded our expectations in some regions, leading to ongoing product shortages.” It also said it would “continue to strive to meet the strong demand by ensuring a stable supply of hardware.” Both statements appear in the company’s November 5, 2025 investor report; neither quotation is attributed there to a named executive.
How should the sales figures be read?
Nintendo’s figures describe different measures and time periods, so they should not be treated as interchangeable:

Sell-through and sell-in are distinct measures. The later cumulative sell-in figure should not be read as a direct extension of the launch sell-through count.

What does this mean for buyers now?
The 2025 launch record cannot establish current availability. If you are shopping now, check local retailer stock, the current price, bundle contents, and delivery or pickup terms. The historical shortage statements are not a reason to rush a purchase.

Nintendo announced the system for release in 2025 in its January 16, 2025 announcement; the company later confirmed the June 5 date. Nintendo Australia also published a regional launch announcement, “Nintendo Switch 2 launches 5th June”.
