What kind of game is it, and who do you play?
The game is set in a near-future Tokyo threatened by the return of an ancient enemy. Its new protagonist, Yakumo, is a young ninja whose fate intersects with Ryu Hayabusa, who remains an important character and is playable. Combat highlights include Bloodbind Ninjutsu and returning techniques such as the Izuna Drop and Flying Swallow, alongside customization options.

PlatinumGames producer and director Yuji Nakao said the team wanted a new hero to make the series more approachable for newcomers. That does not make Ryu peripheral: the official announcement presents both Yakumo and the veteran ninja as central to the story.
Is NINJA GAIDEN 2 Black a remake or a remaster?
Xbox calls NINJA GAIDEN 2 Black a remaster of the 2008 NINJA GAIDEN 2. It launched on January 23, 2025—the same day Xbox announced NINJA GAIDEN 4. Team NINJA head and producer Fumihiko Yasuda described it as a version that combines additions from NINJA GAIDEN II Sigma with an effort to stay close to the original Xbox 360 game’s challenge and feel. Yasuda said “Black” signals the team’s intent for it to be a definitive version.

Should you play NINJA GAIDEN 2 Black before NINJA GAIDEN 4?
The available official information does not establish that you need to play NINJA GAIDEN 2 Black first. The games serve different purposes: Black revisits the 2008 entry, while NINJA GAIDEN 4 continues the mainline story after NINJA GAIDEN 3 and introduces Yakumo alongside Ryu.

Why did Xbox call the gap a “13-year hiatus”?
In its January 23, 2025 announcement, Xbox Wire described NINJA GAIDEN 4 as arriving after a “13-year hiatus.” That is the publisher’s characterization of the interval before the new mainline entry, rather than a separately established statistic about the series.
