No: Nintendo Switch 2 did not launch before April 2025. Nintendo announced a June 5, 2025 release date on April 2, then confirmed the system was available on launch day. The original “don’t expect it before April” line was a 2024 industry report—not an official Nintendo date—and its broad timing proved right, though the launch came in June rather than April or May.

What the August 2024 report actually said

On August 13, 2024, BGR reported comments from GamesIndustry.biz head Chris Dring, who said developers he had spoken with did not expect Nintendo’s successor to launch in the company’s fiscal year ending March 31, 2025. Dring said developers had been told not to expect a launch in that fiscal year; some hoped it would arrive in April or May 2025. BGR’s report attributes the claim to developer conversations. It was not a launch-date announcement from Nintendo.

The report also mentioned an expectation that Nintendo would announce its successor before that fiscal year ended. That was a separate forecast from the launch timing, not confirmation of a release date.

When did Nintendo Switch 2 launch?

Nintendo announced on April 2, 2025 that Switch 2 would launch June 5, 2025. On June 5, Nintendo confirmed the console was available. The prediction that the system would not launch before April was therefore borne out, but the hoped-for April or May release did not happen. Nintendo’s announcement listed a U.S. suggested retail price of $449.99 at launch; that historical MSRP does not establish today’s price.
