Nintendo cited market conditions and its global business outlook, not tariffs specifically. Tariffs could affect future pricing, but Nintendo has not announced another U.S. increase or said tariffs caused the 2026 change.
How much does the Nintendo Switch 2 cost now?
Nintendo announced the following regional price changes in its May 8, 2026 notice. The figures are official suggested retail prices, not a survey of retailer listings.

| Japan, Japanese-only model | ¥49,980 | ¥59,980 | Tax included; May 25, 2026 |
Nintendo said the price of the multilingual model sold through My Nintendo Store in Japan would not change in this notice. Because the U.S. and Canadian prices exclude tax while the European and Japanese prices include it, the figures should not be compared as if they represented the same tax treatment. The announcement is on Nintendo’s May 8, 2026 price notice.
Did tariffs cause the 2026 price increase?
Nintendo’s May 2026 notice attributed the revisions broadly to market conditions and a global business outlook expected to affect the company over the medium to long term. It did not identify tariffs as the cause of the U.S. increase. The available statements also do not quantify any contribution tariffs may have made to the new MSRP.

- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
That distinction matters: tariffs are a plausible cost factor, but plausibility is not confirmation of what drove a specific announced price. The public explanation Nintendo gave for the 2026 change is broader than tariffs.
What has Nintendo said about tariffs?
Launch-period comments from Nintendo of America
In an April 7, 2025 WIRED interview, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser said tariffs “weren’t factored into the pricing” of the console. He said Nintendo was “actively assessing” the situation and its impact, calling it a challenge. Those comments came during the console’s 2025 U.S. launch period, when Nintendo had delayed U.S. preorders to assess potential tariff effects and changing market conditions; they do not explain the later 2026 increase.

Nintendo’s stated general approach
In March 2026, Ars Technica reported Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa’s explanation of the company’s general policy. He said: “Our basic policy is that for any country or region, if tariffs are imposed, we recognize them as part of the cost and incorporate them into the price.” He also said that if tariff assumptions changed, Nintendo would consider appropriate price adjustments while taking market conditions and other factors into account. The remarks are reported by Ars Technica.
This describes a conditional approach, not a commitment to raise the Switch 2 price. It supports the possibility that tariffs can influence pricing decisions, but it does not establish that tariffs caused the 2026 U.S. MSRP change.

Could tariffs make the Switch 2 more expensive again?
They could be one factor in a future pricing decision: Furukawa said Nintendo treats imposed tariffs as costs and may consider adjustments if tariff assumptions change. But the reviewed public statements do not establish a plan for another U.S. increase, identify the tariff treatment of units currently sold, or show how much tariffs added to the 2026 MSRP.
For now, the confirmed fact is the price already in effect—not a further announced increase. Any retailer’s listed price, tax, and stock may differ from Nintendo’s U.S. tax-exclusive suggested retail price.
