The $399 price was an analyst’s forecast—not a price Nintendo announced. In February 2025, analyst Joost van Dreunen predicted that Nintendo would set the Switch 2’s U.S. MSRP at $399. The console launched at $449.99, and Nintendo’s current U.S. MSRP is $499.99, effective September 1, 2026.
Was the Switch 2 really supposed to cost $399?
Not officially. HotHardware reported on February 19, 2025, that Joost van Dreunen expected a $399 U.S. MSRP. Nintendo had not yet announced the console’s final price, so the figure was a pre-launch prediction—not a promise, confirmed plan, or launch price.

HotHardware identified van Dreunen as a video games professor and former co-founder and CEO of SuperData Research. The article quoted him describing $399 as “a critical psychological threshold that balances premium hardware aspirations against mainstream market accessibility.” That is his explanation for the forecast, not a Nintendo statement or a demonstrated consumer rule. What did Nintendo actually charge in the U.S.?
Nintendo announced a $449.99 U.S. MSRP for the standalone Switch 2 at launch. The system released on June 5, 2025; Nintendo’s launch announcement also covered a Mario Kart World bundle, which is a separate package from the standalone console. Nintendo’s launch announcement.

Nintendo of America later announced that the U.S. system MSRP would rise to $499.99 effective September 1, 2026. As of October 8, 2026, that is the current official U.S. MSRP stated in Nintendo’s notice. MSRP is a suggested retail price, not a guarantee of retailer stock or the price a buyer will pay. Nintendo attributed the revision to “various changes in market conditions,” which it expected to extend over the medium to long term; its notice did not give a detailed cost breakdown. How do official prices differ by market?
Nintendo published separate price notices for the United States, Canada, and Japan. These are local prices for their respective markets and products, not currency conversions or directly comparable retail offers.

The phrase describes van Dreunen’s reasoning, not an established cutoff at which buyers broadly switch from wanting a console to rejecting it. The HotHardware report compared his prediction with earlier Nintendo Switch prices and handheld gaming PCs, but those comparisons are positioning arguments—not proof that consumers would buy at $399 and refuse to pay more.

The cited coverage does not provide a consumer survey, demand-elasticity estimate, or other quantified evidence establishing a universal $399 threshold. The useful distinction is therefore between an analyst’s judgment about how Nintendo might position the hardware and Nintendo’s subsequently announced prices.
