The May date referred to the opening of Nintendo SAN FRANCISCO, while the console date began as a community theory before Nintendo confirmed its plans.

Those official announcements settle the date: the console did not launch on May 15. Nintendo’s launch announcement is available in its April 2 release-date notice, and its June 5 launch-day notice confirms the release.
Why did May 15 become a release-date theory?
On March 18, Tom’s Guide reported a prediction from ThunderStash Gaming that Switch 2 might arrive May 15. The prediction was described as based on community research and reasoning—not leaks or insider sources—and the coverage presented it as a theory, not a confirmed report.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
The clues included a game release scheduled for May 15 and Nintendo’s plan to open a new store that day. These were circumstantial connections; neither was Nintendo confirmation of a console launch. Tom’s Guide’s contemporaneous report explains the theory and its stated basis in its March 18 article.
What happened on May 15, 2025?
Nintendo SAN FRANCISCO opened on May 15 at 331 Powell Street in Union Square. Nintendo had announced the opening on March 13, describing the location as its second official store in the United States. The store offers systems, games, accessories, apparel, home goods, souvenirs, and location-exclusive products. Its opening date—not a Switch 2 release—was the real Nintendo event behind the May 15 connection.

What Nintendo reported after launch
On June 11, Nintendo said more than 3.5 million Switch 2 systems had sold worldwide in the first four days after launch. Nintendo attributed the figure to its internal data; it is the company’s reported sales total, not an independently audited count. The statement is in Nintendo’s June 11 announcement.
