Nintendo Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025. It brings a larger 1080p screen, more internal storage and higher-resolution TV output, while retaining compatibility with many—but not all—original Nintendo Switch games. The right purchase depends on your region, the games you want to play and whether you need new accessories such as a microSD Express card.

When did Nintendo Switch 2 come out?

Nintendo Switch 2 launched worldwide on June 5, 2025. Nintendo said it sold more than 3.5 million units globally during the first four days, citing its internal sales data. That is an early launch-period figure, not a current lifetime sales total.

How much does Nintendo Switch 2 cost?

Prices and bundles depend on the market and can change over time. At US launch, Nintendo’s suggested price was $449.99 for the standalone system or $499.99 for a bundle that included a digital download of Mario Kart World. Nintendo’s launch announcement listed the game at $79.99 and Donkey Kong Bananza at $69.99; those are launch-era US suggested prices, not confirmed current prices.

Those US figures should not be treated as prices for other countries. Nintendo Australia and New Zealand list regional pricing and offers separately. Japan also has distinct system variations, including a domestic Japanese-language model and a separate multilingual model. Check Nintendo’s listing for your market before buying, especially if considering an imported system.

Nintendo Switch 2 System

Nintendo’s US store listed a Switch 2 bundle with Nintendo Switch Sports Resort for release on October 22, 2026. The listing described a game download and three months of an individual Nintendo Switch Online membership. Because this was a forthcoming offer on October 8, 2026, it does not confirm later availability or stock.

What is new in the Switch 2 hardware?

Screen, storage and performance modes

Nintendo specifies a 7.9-inch LCD touchscreen with a wide color gamut, 1920×1080 resolution, HDR10 support and variable refresh rate up to 120 Hz. In handheld and tabletop modes, the display resolution is up to 1080p. In TV mode, the dock supports output up to 3840×2160 at 60 frames per second, or up to 120 fps at 1920×1080 or 2560×1440 when the game and selected display mode support it. These are supported output limits, not a guarantee that every game runs at those settings.

The system has 256 GB of UFS internal storage, some of which is reserved for system use, and uses a custom NVIDIA processor. Nintendo also lists Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth, two USB-C ports, stereo speakers, a built-in microphone and a 3.5 mm audio jack.

Battery and play styles

Nintendo estimates battery life at approximately 2–6.5 hours, depending on the game, and charging time at approximately three hours while the console is asleep. These are manufacturer estimates, not independent test results. Switch 2 supports handheld, tabletop and TV play.

Joy-Con 2 controllers attach magnetically and include mouse sensors for games that support them. Control options and display modes vary by game; do not assume every title supports every feature.

What games can you play?

Switch 2 games

At launch, Nintendo said more than 20 Switch 2 titles were available. Its launch announcement highlighted Mario Kart World and listed games including Split Fiction, Street Fighter 6, Sid Meier’s Civilization VII – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, as well as Switch 2 editions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. This is a historical launch snapshot, not a complete current catalog.

Nintendo described Mario Kart World as taking place in an interconnected environment, with races of up to 24 drivers and modes including Knockout Tour and Free Roam. Its US launch suggested price was $79.99; check current local pricing and availability before purchase.

Original Switch games, upgrades and compatibility

Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but compatibility is not universal. Some games have partial compatibility issues or do not work, and some offer free updates or paid upgrades for added content or improved performance. Check Nintendo’s current compatibility information for the specific title before buying or transferring a library; a game’s presence in your Switch account does not by itself guarantee full compatibility or include a paid upgrade.

What does GameChat require?

GameChat uses Switch 2’s built-in microphone for voice chat. Video chat supports up to four people when a compatible USB-C camera is connected; the camera is sold separately. Nintendo’s launch notice said GameChat did not require a Nintendo Switch Online membership through March 31, 2026, and that membership would be required afterward. That launch grace period has ended, so check Nintendo’s current terms for membership requirements.

What accessories work with Switch 2?

Storage: microSD Express only for game expansion

Switch 2 uses microSD Express cards for expanded game storage, with Nintendo specifying support up to 2 TB. A conventional microSD card does not expand Switch 2 game storage. Nintendo says ordinary microSD cards can be used only to copy screenshots and videos from the original Switch.

Controllers, dock and power adapter

  • Original Joy-Con controllers can pair wirelessly, but they cannot attach to Switch 2.
  • The original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller can pair wirelessly and charge through the Switch 2 dock.
  • The original Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2.
  • The original Nintendo Switch AC adapter can charge Switch 2 directly, but it cannot power the system in TV mode.

Should you buy Switch 2 or upgrade from Switch?

For a first-time Nintendo handheld buyer, the key checks are the current price in your region, the games you want and whether the included storage will suit your library. If you already own a Switch, start with the compatibility status of the games you care about, then compare the cost of any desired Switch 2 editions or upgrades with the features you would use, such as the larger 1080p screen, higher TV output modes or Joy-Con 2 mouse controls.

When comparing a standalone system with a bundle, weigh the bundle’s included game and any membership offer against the actual local price difference. If you plan to install more games, budget for a microSD Express card rather than assuming an older microSD card will work for game storage. Accessories and software offers vary by region and date.
