An ignored player, the profanity filter, an account restriction, a service issue, or a connection problem can each explain different symptoms—so start with the check that matches what you see.
Identify what is and is not working
Before changing settings, narrow down the symptom. Note whether messages are missing from one player, one channel, overhead chat, or all chat, and whether you can still send messages. This is a practical way to choose what to check first, not a definitive test of the cause.
- One player’s messages are missing: check whether you have ignored that player.
- Text appears obscured or altered: inspect the profanity-filter setting.
- You can read chat but cannot send: investigate whether the account is muted or otherwise restricted.
- Several channels are affected, or the client also has loading or connection problems: check service status and general connection issues.
Check the Ignore List for a missing player’s messages
If messages from a particular player are absent while other chat works, check your Ignore List and remove that player if they are listed and you want to see their messages. Jagex says messages from players on your Ignore List are not visible to you. See Jagex’s Harassment support article.
Inspect the OSRS profanity-filter setting
If chat is present but some text is filtered, open the in-game spanner, go to All Settings, and find Profanity Filter. Inspect the control’s current state and adjust it if needed. Jagex documents this setting for Old School RuneScape and says it applies across chat channels. Its support article’s wording about the checkbox is ambiguous, so use the control itself rather than assuming that a checked or unchecked state has a particular effect: Jagex’s profanity-filter instructions.

If you cannot send messages, check for an account restriction
A mute or another restriction may prevent normal chat. Jagex’s general RuneScape Quick Chat guidance describes Quick Chat as useful when normal chat is unavailable because of a mute or other restriction. That page is not specific to OSRS, so treat this as a possibility—not confirmation of your account’s status. For a definitive answer, check Jagex account or support channels: Quick chat.
Check OSRS service status and general connection issues
If multiple channels are affected, or chat stopped working alongside loading or connection trouble, check the official Old School RuneScape homepage for its Game Status Information Centre link and current maintenance or live-issue notices. A service issue can look like a local problem, so check status before changing your setup.

If no relevant service issue is listed, Jagex’s general connection guidance suggests these checks:
- Restart your modem or router.
- Check that your firewall allows the game client to connect.
- Try a game world closer to your location, or a wired connection if practical.
- Use an official game client.
- If you use a VPN, test without it; Jagex warns that VPNs may interfere with access.

When to contact Jagex Support
If the Ignore List and filter do not explain the issue, no relevant service notice is posted, and general connection checks do not help, consult Jagex’s client-issues troubleshooting article and use its support contact path. It covers general client and loading problems; it does not identify a chat-specific bug.
