A January 14, 2025 report said Nintendo would reveal Switch 2 on January 16 and launch it in May or June. Nintendo did reveal the console on January 16, and it later set the release date for June 5. The leak got the reveal date right; its reported timing for a software-focused Direct did not match Nintendo’s eventual schedule.
What did the Switch 2 leak report say?
IGN reported on January 14, 2025, that leaker Nate the Hate had said Nintendo planned to reveal Switch 2 on January 16. The report described the expected first video as focused on the hardware, with a software-focused Nintendo Direct reportedly planned for late February or early March. It also gave a May-or-June 2025 launch window. IGN attributed corroboration of the launch window to VGC and said VGC and The Verge’s Tom Warren had also supported the reveal-date report. These were contemporaneous media reports, not statements from Nintendo. IGN’s January 14 report

When was the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal?

Partly. The January 16 reveal prediction was correct, and the reported May-or-June launch window included the eventual release date. But Nintendo’s full Direct was scheduled for April 2, not late February or early March as the January report had said was expected. The report’s launch window was broad rather than an exact date, so it should not be treated as a leaked launch day.

What the official launch details established
Nintendo said Switch 2 could play compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, while warning that some titles might not be supported or fully compatible. Original Switch Joy-Con controllers and peripherals such as the Switch Pro Controller could be used wirelessly; that did not mean every game or accessory would work without limits. Nintendo also listed 256 GB of internal storage, with expansion using microSD Express cards, and described a separately sold compatible USB-C camera as an option for GameChat video.
