The headline’s “this year” meant 2024. Toyo Securities analyst Hideki Yasuda predicted that Nintendo was unlikely to reveal the Switch successor before that year ended, but Nintendo announced Nintendo Switch 2 in January 2025 and later set its release date for June 5, 2025.
What the 2024 prediction said
In a November 5, 2024 report, MobileSyrup attributed the forecast to Yasuda, speaking to Reuters. It was an analyst’s judgment—not a statement of Nintendo’s plans—that a reveal before the end of 2024 had become difficult.

Yasuda’s stated concern was that announcing an upcoming console during the year-end shopping season could pull attention away from the existing Switch. That was his assessment of the timing, not confirmation of Nintendo’s strategy. MobileSyrup’s November 5, 2024 report gives the original context.
What Nintendo announced afterward
Nintendo announced Nintendo Switch 2 on January 16, 2025, saying it would be released during 2025. On April 2, 2025, the company set the release date as June 5, 2025. These official announcements superseded the uncertainty in the 2024 forecast.

What “this year” means now
The phrase refers to 2024, the year MobileSyrup published the headline. It is not a current prediction about when Nintendo will reveal Switch 2: the console has since been announced and released.
