The Nintendo Switch 2 is a worthwhile upgrade for players who want Nintendo’s current games, a larger handheld screen and the option to play on a TV. It is an evolutionary step, not a dramatic leap: the 7.9-inch LCD is larger and sharper than the original Switch screen, but it is not OLED, battery life is estimated at roughly 2–6.5 hours, and the current US suggested price is $499.99 before tax. Whether it is “good enough” depends chiefly on how much you value those improvements—and which Switch games you already own.
What the Switch 2 review verdict means
Switch 2 preserves the original system’s central appeal: one console for handheld, tabletop and TV play. Nintendo’s hardware adds a larger 1080p handheld screen, more capable output options and new Joy-Con 2 features, while retaining compatibility with many existing Switch games. Those are meaningful refinements for Nintendo-focused players, but they do not make the system a universal performance upgrade in every game or mode.

That distinction also appears in Keith Stuart’s June 10, 2025 launch-period review for The Guardian, which called it “a highly refined version of the original console” rather than an entirely new generation of handheld gaming. That assessment is useful context, not a current long-term reliability review or a 2026 comparison with competing handhelds.

A bigger handheld screen, with an OLED trade-off
The built-in display measures 7.9 inches and has a 1080p resolution. It is an LCD, not an OLED panel like the screen on the Switch OLED model. The added screen size and resolution are a clear part of the upgrade, but players who prize OLED contrast should weigh the panel change before buying. Nintendo lists HDR and variable refresh rate (VRR) among supported display capabilities; support depends on the game and setup rather than applying universally.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Higher TV output is a capability, not a promise for every game
In TV mode, Switch 2 can output up to 4K when paired with a compatible television, with 4K output capped at 60 frames per second. Nintendo also advertises up to 120 fps in compatible games. These are maximum supported capabilities, not a guarantee that games generally run at 4K/60 or 120 fps. Nintendo says TV-mode VRR support arrived in a system update on September 10, 2026. See Nintendo’s feature and play-mode details for supported features.
Joy-Con 2 adds mouse-style controls
Joy-Con 2 controllers attach magnetically and include mouse sensors. Either controller can work as a mouse in compatible games, creating another control option rather than changing how every game is played. The included package contains the console dock, grip, controller straps, HDMI cable, AC adapter and USB-C charging cable.
Battery life and storage: practical limits to plan around
Battery life depends on the game and conditions
Nintendo estimates approximately 2–6.5 hours of battery life and says the result varies with the game and usage conditions. This is a manufacturer estimate, not an independently measured test result. Nintendo estimates charging takes about three hours while the console is in Sleep mode. The battery is not user-removable; Nintendo says replacement is available for a fee through customer support. Details are in the technical specifications and Nintendo’s April 2025 announcement.

Game expansion requires microSD Express
The console has 256 GB of UFS internal storage, some of which is reserved for system use. For game-storage expansion, it supports microSD Express cards up to 2 TB. Older microSD cards do not expand game storage on Switch 2; they are limited to copying screenshots and videos from Switch. If you expect to keep many digital games installed, account for the cost of the correct card format.
Can Switch 2 play original Switch games?
Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, which makes an existing library relevant to the upgrade decision. Compatibility is not universal: Nintendo warns that some titles may be unsupported or may not be fully compatible. Check the status of the specific games you care about on Nintendo’s compatibility information before relying on them. Compatibility with Switch games also does not mean every title receives a Switch 2-specific upgrade.
What online features and GameChat require
GameChat includes voice communication through the console’s built-in microphone. Video chat requires a separately sold Nintendo Switch 2 Camera or another compatible USB-C camera. Nintendo says online features, including GameChat, require internet access, a Nintendo Account and a Nintendo Switch Online membership. The launch-period free-access window ended in March 2026, so buyers should not assume GameChat is still included without membership.

Current price by market
Nintendo’s 2026 price revision sets the following prices from the dates shown. US prices exclude tax; the listed European and Japanese prices include tax. Check the local Nintendo store or retailer for the price in other markets.
| Market and system | Current listed price | Effective date |
|---|---|---|
| United States | $499.99 suggested retail price; tax excluded | September 1, 2026 |
| Europe | €499.99; tax included | September 1, 2026 |
| Japan, Japanese-language system | ¥59,980; tax included | May 25, 2026 |
These are the prices Nintendo lists in its May 8, 2026 price-revision notice. The US launch announcement in April 2025 listed $449.99 for the standalone console and $499.99 for a Mario Kart World bundle; those are historical launch figures, not the current US standalone price. Nintendo’s launch announcement also gives the June 5, 2025 release date.
Who should buy it—and who can wait?
Switch 2 makes sense if
- You want Nintendo’s current games and prefer one system for handheld, tabletop and television play.
- A larger, sharper handheld screen matters more to you than having an OLED panel.
- You have checked that the Switch games you care about are compatible and see value in continuing to use that library.
- You are comfortable with the current price and, for digital-game expansion, the requirement to use microSD Express.
Waiting may make more sense if
- Your original Switch or Switch OLED already meets your needs and you do not need Switch 2-specific games or features yet.
- You mainly play portably and consider OLED display quality or longer unplugged sessions more important than the larger 1080p screen.
- The $499.99 US suggested price, before tax, is hard to justify for the games and features you expect to use.
There is not enough evidence here to rank Switch 2 against handheld gaming PCs on performance or value, or to draw conclusions about long-term reliability. For an existing Switch owner, the most useful comparison is personal: the games you play, how often you use handheld mode, and whether the new screen and features justify buying another console at today’s local price.
