Nintendo Switch 2 Scalpers: What Nintendo Has Done to Curb Resale

Nintendo prioritized supply and introduced targeted Japan-specific measures against Switch 2 scalping, but the available sources do not measure their impact.

Nintendo’s main stated defense against Switch 2 scalping was to make enough consoles to meet demand. It also described region-specific measures: Japan’s official-store lotteries gave active Switch players a prioritized chance to apply, and Nintendo later announced cooperation with major Japanese marketplaces to address fraudulent listings. A June 2026 report described additional purchase requirements for one Japan Store model. These steps were not a worldwide resale ban, and Nintendo has not published figures showing how much they reduced scalping or resale prices.

What is Nintendo doing to prevent Switch 2 scalping?

Nintendo’s approach combined three different levers: increasing supply, controlling access to some official-store purchase opportunities, and working with specific marketplaces on listings that violate their rules. They differ in scope and should not be treated as one universal anti-scalping policy.

Measure Where and when What it did
Produce enough hardware Nintendo’s stated strategy in 2024, with supply plans reiterated in 2025 Make meeting demand the primary countermeasure against resale.
Marketplace cooperation Japan, announced May 27, 2025 Mercari, LINE Yahoo, and Rakuten Group agreed to cooperate on fraudulent listings, including active removals under each service’s rules and information sharing.
Lottery and account history Japan’s My Nintendo Store in 2025 Use drawings for purchase opportunities; Nintendo said account information let it prioritize active Switch players’ chance to apply.
Playtime and account limit Japan Store multilingual model, reported June 12, 2026 Nintendo Life reported a 50-hour prior-playtime requirement and a one-unit-per-account limit. This is secondary reporting about a specific model and channel.

Why did Nintendo focus on supply?

At Nintendo’s 84th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders in June 2024, president Shuntaro Furukawa called producing enough units to meet demand the most important countermeasure against resale. He said Nintendo was also considering measures suited to regional circumstances and permitted by law. Nintendo’s 2024 shareholder Q&A said semiconductor shortages had constrained Switch production in the preceding two years, but Nintendo then did not expect component shortages to significantly affect successor production. That was the company’s outlook at the time, not a guarantee of later availability.

Nintendo reiterated its intention to strengthen production and supply in 2025. But at the 85th shareholder meeting, Furukawa acknowledged that demand was exceeding supply in many countries. The supply-first strategy therefore did not prevent shortages everywhere.

How did Japan’s official-store lottery work?

For the Switch 2 launch, Nintendo’s My Nintendo Store in Japan accepted applications for randomly selected purchase opportunities. Nintendo said it had received more than 2.2 million applications by April 23, 2025, and had held four drawings. Some applicants remained unselected; a fifth drawing was planned for early July. The figure is Nintendo’s reported application count, not a verified count of individual scalpers or unique people.

Applicants needed a Nintendo Account. Nintendo said account information allowed it to offer active Nintendo Switch players a prioritized opportunity to apply during the transition to Switch 2. That priority was not a guaranteed purchase, and the lottery was not a system used by every retailer. Furukawa also acknowledged positive and negative feedback about the format.

Did Nintendo ban Switch 2 resale?

No blanket resale ban appears in the cited announcements. On May 27, 2025, Nintendo announced cooperation with Mercari, Yahoo! Auctions, Yahoo! Flea Market, and Rakuten Rakuma in Japan to address fraudulent listings of Nintendo products, including Switch 2. The marketplaces described active removal of listings that violate their own service terms, alongside information sharing. Nintendo did not say all secondhand sales were prohibited or that the arrangement applied worldwide. Nintendo’s announcement describes a collaboration with named services, not direct Nintendo policing of every resale platform.

What were the reported 2026 Japan Store requirements?

A June 12, 2026 Nintendo Life report, citing a translated notice, said Nintendo Japan added conditions for buying the multilingual Switch 2 model through Nintendo Store after identifying multiple orders suspected of hoarding or similar activity:

The report said the conditions for the Japanese-language/Japan-only model were unchanged. This is secondary reporting about a particular model sold through Nintendo Store, not an established rule for every Switch 2 model, seller, or country. The cited report does not establish whether the restriction remains in force now.

Did these measures stop scalpers?

The available announcements show what Nintendo and the named Japanese marketplaces said they would do, but not the results. The reviewed sources do not quantify scalpers’ share of purchases, listings removed, changes in resale premiums, or how much supply came from anti-scalping actions. Nintendo separately reported that Switch 2 sold more than 3.5 million units worldwide in its first four days, calling it the highest global first-four-day sales level for any Nintendo hardware. That sales figure does not show that resale was prevented.

The clearest conclusion is limited: Nintendo pursued a supply-first strategy and added targeted Japan-specific purchase and marketplace measures. The evidence cited here does not establish how effective those measures were at reducing scalping.
