Nintendo Switch 2 Storage Options: microSD Express Cards Explained

By VGSources Team 7 min read

Nintendo Switch 2 accepts microSD Express cards only for expandable game storage, with support for capacities up to 2 TB. Its 256 GB of built-in UFS storage is partly reserved for system use. Older ordinary microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC cards from the original Switch cannot store or run Switch 2 games, updates, downloadable content, or save data. They can still be used to import screenshots and videos.

Downloaded software, updates, DLC, screenshots, and captured videos can use a microSD Express card. Game save data stays in the console’s system memory. Nintendo recommends using one card rather than spreading software across several cards.

What storage does Nintendo Switch 2 support?

Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal UFS storage. Nintendo reserves part of that capacity for system functions, so the full 256 GB is not available for games and media. The expansion slot supports microSD Express cards with capacities up to 2 TB.

Storage option What Switch 2 supports What it can hold
Internal UFS storage Built into every console; 256 GB nominal capacity, with some space reserved for system use Downloaded software, updates, DLC, save data, screenshots and captured videos
microSD Express Required for expandable storage; up to 2 TB Downloaded software, updates, DLC, screenshots and captured videos
Ordinary microSD, microSDHC or microSDXC Not supported as Switch 2 game storage Can be used to import screenshots and videos from an original Switch
External USB hard drive Not currently supported according to Nintendo’s Data Management FAQ No Switch 2 storage function documented by Nintendo

The important distinction is between the card’s physical capacity and the data types the console permits it to store. A large card does not become a backup destination for saved games simply because it fits in the slot.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

Why Switch 2 requires a microSD Express card

microSD Express is a storage standard designed for faster access than the ordinary microSD cards used by the previous Switch. Nintendo says the Express requirement is needed for faster access and smooth game operation. That is a compatibility requirement, not a promise that one Express card will make games visibly faster than another compatible Express card.

Check the card itself for the explicit microSD Express marking. Do not assume that a card is compatible because its packaging says “microSDXC,” lists a large capacity, or advertises a high read speed. microSDXC describes a capacity and file-system family; it does not by itself prove that the card meets the Express standard required by Switch 2.

Nintendo’s support guidance is broad: any card that meets the microSD Express standard and is no larger than 2 TB can be used. The company does not identify a single mandatory manufacturer or model.

What a microSD Express card stores

Downloaded games and other software

When a microSD Express card is inserted, it becomes the default location for downloaded software. That includes digitally purchased games, software updates and downloadable content. You can therefore use the card to expand the space available for a digital library beyond the usable portion of the console’s internal storage.

What remains in system memory

Game save data remains in system memory. Nintendo states that save data cannot be copied to a microSD Express card, so the card is not a save-game backup. Supported titles may use Nintendo Switch Online cloud backup through Nintendo’s data-management features, but that is separate from card storage.

Screenshots and captured videos

Switch 2 can save screenshots and captured videos to a microSD Express card, and those files can be moved between system memory and the card. This makes the card useful for clearing capture space even when your games are installed internally.

Current guidance on additional space

Nintendo’s current Data Management FAQ says that, at the time of that guidance, no individual games required additional storage space to play. Treat that as a statement of the games and system behavior covered by the FAQ at that time, not as a permanent guarantee for every future release.

Can you reuse an original Switch microSD card?

Yes, but only for a limited purpose. An ordinary microSD, microSDHC or microSDXC card previously used with the original Nintendo Switch can be used to import screenshots and videos to Switch 2. It cannot be used to load or save Switch 2 digital games, software updates, DLC or save data.

This means an old card is not completely useless, but it is not an expansion card for Switch 2 games. If the card is the type commonly sold for the first-generation Switch and does not carry the microSD Express marking, do not plan your Switch 2 game library around it.

How much capacity should you buy?

Nintendo supports capacities up to 2 TB, but there is no universally correct size. Choose by comparing the card’s capacity with the amount of downloaded software and capture media you expect to keep installed at the same time. The internal 256 GB figure is nominal and partly reserved, so it should not be treated as 256 GB of free game space.

  • Multiple Capacity Options – Available in 256GB, 512GB and 1TB options to suit your storage needs. Note that actual usable storage may be slightly less due to system formatting and a portion reserved for card management functions, which is a standard industry practice to ensure optimal performance and reliability.

If most of your collection is physical

A smaller Express card may be sufficient if you mainly use game cards and download only updates, DLC and a limited number of digital titles. Leave room for captured videos if you record frequently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you buy mostly digital games

A larger card reduces the number of times you need to archive and redownload software. The relevant comparison is the capacity of one compatible card against your expected library, not the headline capacity of an incompatible ordinary microSD card.

If you capture a lot of video

Capture files can consume space independently of games. Account for screenshots and videos when estimating capacity, because they can be moved to the card but still compete for the card’s available storage.

Nintendo does not provide an official game-count formula in the cited support material, and game sizes vary. Avoid capacity claims based on a fixed number of games unless you calculate them from the specific titles you own.

How to install and use a microSD Express card

  1. Confirm the standard. Read the card and packaging for the microSD Express designation. A plain microSDXC label is not enough.
  2. Check the capacity. Stay at or below Nintendo’s 2 TB limit.
  3. Install the card in the console. Use the Switch 2 card slot and follow the console’s on-screen instructions.
  4. Connect to the internet for first use. Nintendo says a system update over the internet is required the first time a microSD Express card is used.
  5. Install or move software. Newly downloaded software uses the Express card as the default save location for the software itself. Save data continues to use system memory.
  6. Manage captures separately. Move screenshots and captured videos between system memory and the card when you need to free space.

The console’s update requirement is easy to overlook if you install a card while offline. Complete the system update before diagnosing the card as defective.

Using more than one card

You can use multiple microSD Express cards with the console, but Nintendo recommends a single card. The practical reason is library management: downloadable software stored across several cards cannot later be combined into one card.

If you run out of room, Nintendo says you can copy all data to a larger microSD Express card. Plan that change as a migration from one card to another rather than as a way to merge several partially filled cards. Keep the original card until you have confirmed that the larger card contains the software and media you intended to move.

Why a single-card setup is simpler

  • All installed downloadable software is in one place.
  • You avoid switching cards to access different parts of your library.
  • A future upgrade can be handled as one complete-card copy.
  • You do not create a collection of cards that cannot later be consolidated into one through the console’s supported process.

Troubleshooting common storage mistakes

The console does not accept the card

First check that the card is genuinely microSD Express, not an ordinary microSDXC card. Next confirm that its capacity is no more than 2 TB and that the console has completed the internet system update required for first use. Those checks address the compatibility conditions Nintendo documents.

A game save is missing from the card

That is expected behavior, not evidence that the card failed. Save data is stored in system memory and cannot be copied to a microSD Express card. Use the console’s supported save-management or cloud-backup options for supported titles instead of looking for save files on the card.

An old Switch card contains games but they will not launch

Original Switch game data on an ordinary microSD card cannot serve as Switch 2 game storage. Use that card to import screenshots and videos, then install Switch 2 software on internal storage or a compatible microSD Express card.

You expected a larger card to improve performance

Compatibility with the Express standard is required for the access characteristics Nintendo specifies, but the cited guidance does not establish a speed ranking among compatible cards. Select capacity and current price based on your needs; do not pay a premium on the assumption that a particular compatible capacity automatically improves gameplay.

Buying checklist

  • Look for the exact microSD Express marking.
  • Confirm capacity does not exceed 2 TB.
  • Decide how much space your digital library and capture files need together.
  • Compare current regional price and availability only among compatible Express cards.
  • Remember that saved games stay in system memory.
  • Prefer one card if you want a straightforward future migration.
  • Keep an old ordinary Switch card only for importing screenshots and videos, not for Switch 2 game installs.

The practical answer

For Switch 2, buy a microSD Express card, not a conventional Switch-era microSD card. Any Express card up to 2 TB meets Nintendo’s stated compatibility rule. Use internal storage and the card for software, updates, DLC and captures, while treating system memory as the location for game saves. A single card sized to your actual digital library is easier to manage than several smaller cards, and moving to a larger card later requires copying the data rather than combining multiple cards.
