Verify the exact store’s launch notice and your order status before you leave. Confirm the local opening time, pickup entrance, whether your order is marked ready or specifically approved for launch-night collection, and which identification and order details the retailer requires. If you plan to buy without a preorder, ask the store about stock and queue rules; a place in line may not guarantee a console.
Midnight launches are event-specific, not a universal console rule
A retailer can open at midnight for one release and operate normal hours for another. An old launch FAQ, a general pickup policy, or another store’s announcement does not establish the rules for your current event. The event notice for your store is the controlling source for date, opening time, entrance, queue location and any special collection process.

Best Buy’s October 8, 2026 announcement illustrates the distinction. For the named The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time release, nearly all U.S. stores were announced to open at midnight Eastern Time on November 5, 2026. The same announcement gave these corresponding local times:

| Mountain | 10:00 p.m. | November 4, 2026 |

| Alaska | 8:00 p.m. | November 4, 2026 |
| Hawaii | 6:00 p.m. | November 4, 2026 |
Those times describe that particular announcement, not a standard midnight hour for console launches. Check whether your location is included, because “nearly all” does not mean every store. A mall may also impose separate building-access rules, so use the store’s directions rather than assuming the doors will open at the advertised minute.

Confirm the five details that determine whether pickup will work
1. The exact store and entrance
Open the event announcement and your order record together. Match the store name, street address and any store number. Some launch instructions direct customers to a particular entrance or a queue away from the usual front doors. Save the address and directions on your phone before leaving; cellular service can be slow around a crowded launch.
2. The local opening time
Convert the announced time to the store’s local time, including the local date. A midnight Eastern opening can occur on the previous calendar day in Central, Mountain, Pacific, Alaska and Hawaii. Recheck the retailer’s notice for changes and verify the store itself, because a chainwide announcement may exclude selected locations.
3. Your order’s current status
For a regular Best Buy store-pickup order, the general pickup page says to wait for a separate “Ready for pickup” email. Bring the identification and order number requested there. A confirmation that an order was placed is not the same as a notice that the item has been staged for collection.

4. What the collector must show
Use the exact requirements in the order record. Best Buy’s general instructions call for identification and the order number, and permit another person to collect only when that person is named or authorized in the order. If someone else is going, add or confirm that person in advance and make sure they carry the required ID and order information. Do not assume a screenshot, a payment card or a verbal explanation can replace a document the retailer specifically requests.
5. Whether you are collecting a preorder or seeking walk-in stock
A preorder and a walk-in purchase are different decisions. A confirmed preorder is tied to an order’s terms and pickup window. A walk-in customer must first establish that the store will sell units to people without reservations and how the queue works. Best Buy’s current release guidance says its release lines are first come, first served, but also states: A place in line does not guarantee product availability.
Staff may not provide real-time inventory counts for a limited release.
Your preparation timeline
The day before
- Read both notices. Open the retailer’s launch announcement and your order details. Record the event date, local opening time, store address, pickup method and any special code or confirmation requirement.
- Check the status, not just the payment receipt. Look for the retailer’s ready-for-pickup message or the event-specific instruction that authorizes collection at launch. If the status is delayed, ask how the store will handle collection rather than joining a queue blindly.
- Identify the order type. Determine whether the reservation was made online or in a store and whether a balance remains. GameStop’s preorder help describes different payment and reservation handling for online and in-store orders, so use the terms attached to your own order.
- Confirm the collector. If another person will pick up the console, verify that the retailer permits it and that the person is named or authorized in advance.
- Plan for the wait. Check the forecast and decide how long you are prepared to stand outside. Retailers do not set one universal arrival time for every launch; an early arrival can mean a longer wait without improving a preorder that is already reserved.
Before leaving home
- Charge your phone. Keep the order email, confirmation number, store address and event notice easy to open. A portable charger is optional but useful for a long wait; Best Buy includes a phone and portable charger in its release-day checklist.
- Pack the required documents. Bring the identification, order number, confirmation email or code specified by the retailer. Carry the original information in the retailer’s app or email as well as any permitted offline copy, but do not assume an image is acceptable unless the instructions say so.
- Dress for standing. Wear comfortable shoes and layers suited to the forecast. Bring water and snacks. A small chair and quiet entertainment can help during a long wait, but use them only where the store and property rules allow.
- Recheck the route. Save the exact address and identify the correct entrance. Allow time for parking, public transit and a possible line away from the normal doors.
- Decide your fallback. Know whom to contact if the order is not ready, the entrance changes or the queue reaches capacity. A written order number is faster to use than searching through multiple messages.
When you arrive
- Find staff or security first. Ask where the launch queue or preorder pickup point begins. Do not create a separate line based on guesses from social media or other customers.
- Keep access clear. Best Buy’s release guidance tells customers not to block entrances, exits, emergency routes, sidewalks, neighboring businesses, traffic or pickup areas. Follow staff directions if the queue moves or is reorganized.
- Separate preorder and walk-in instructions. A reserved pickup may use a verification desk or designated counter, while walk-in sales may be limited to available stock. Ask which process applies before waiting in the wrong line.
- Have documents ready, but protect personal information. Show ID and order details to authorized staff; do not display them publicly or hand your phone to another customer.
- Keep the area orderly. Avoid excessive noise and litter, and respect nearby residents and businesses. The retailer can change the queue for safety or operations.
What to bring for a preorder pickup
| Item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Government-issued or other required ID | Best Buy’s general pickup instructions require identification; use the type specified in your order. |
| Order number | Staff use it to locate the reservation and match it to the collector. |
| Ready-for-pickup email or launch confirmation | The regular Best Buy process says to wait for a separate ready notice; a launch may also request a confirmation email or code. |
| Phone | Provides access to the order, event notice, directions and retailer messages. |
| Portable charger | Optional power for a long queue; included in Best Buy’s release-day checklist. |
| Water and snacks | Useful during an outdoor wait. |
| Comfortable shoes and weather layers | Help with prolonged standing and changing conditions. |
| Small chair, where permitted | Can reduce fatigue during a wait, but property and queue rules take priority. |
Do not bring more than the event requires. A large bag, obstructive chair or other item can slow screening or violate store rules. Check the notice for restrictions before packing.

| Question | Preorder pickup | Walk-in purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Certainty | A confirmed reservation is governed by the order’s terms and pickup instructions. | Availability is limited; Best Buy says a place in line does not guarantee a product. |
| Preparation | Check ready status, ID, order number and authorized collector. | Also verify that the store permits walk-ins and learn where and when its queue forms. |
| Timing | Use the event opening time and the order’s hold period. | There is no universal queue-arrival time; ask the retailer for current directions. |
| Payment | Follow the order record, including any remaining balance or payment step. | Be ready for the payment method and limits announced by the store. |
| Best next action if plans change | Contact the retailer about the reservation before the hold window expires. | Ask staff whether additional stock is expected; do not treat a queue position as a promise. |
Choose the preorder process when you have a valid reservation and can meet its collection terms. Consider a walk-in attempt only after confirming that the store is selling units without reservations and that you accept the possibility of leaving without one.

How long will the retailer hold the order?
Hold periods depend on retailer, order type and event. Applying a general policy to a launch-night reservation can cause cancellation or release of the item.
| Retailer and order type | Published period or handling | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Best Buy regular store-pickup order | Five days | The current general pickup guidance says the order is held for five days before cancellation and refund, subject to an extended-pickup option or specific order terms. |
| GameStop in-store preorder | 48 hours after release | GameStop’s preorder help, updated August 21, 2026, says the reservation may be released after this post-release pickup period; deposit treatment is described separately. |
| GameStop online preorder | Follow the order record | GameStop distinguishes online and in-store payment and reservation handling; the surfaced guidance does not make the in-store 48-hour rule universal. |
Read the order’s own cancellation, refund and deposit terms. If the launch date changes or the item is not ready, ask the retailer whether the hold clock starts at the announced release, the ready notification or another date.
Queue etiquette and safety rules
Release-night crowds affect people who are not attending the launch. Keep sidewalks, entrances, emergency paths, vehicle lanes and neighboring businesses accessible. Do not place chairs, bags or vehicles where they obstruct those routes. Follow security or store employees if they move the line, limit entry or divide preorder customers from walk-ins.
Retailers may not disclose live unit counts for a limited release. Avoid arguing with staff or treating rumors from other customers as inventory information. If staff say stock is exhausted, a longer line will not change that result. The practical rule is to prepare for the possibility that the walk-in attempt ends without a console.

The order says “processing” or has no ready notice
Do not infer that the item is waiting at the counter. Check the event instructions for a special launch collection process and contact the retailer with the order number. Ask whether you should wait for a ready message, use a launch desk or return after the item is staged.
The store is closed at the announced time
Check that you converted the time zone and date correctly and that your location is included in the announcement. Reopen the latest event notice for a changed entrance or revised hour. Mall access can differ from the store’s own operating time.
Another person must collect the preorder
Confirm the person is authorized in the order before the event. Give them the order number and the exact identification required. If the retailer does not show that person as an approved collector, contact support before they travel; a verbal arrangement may not be accepted at the counter.

The walk-in line is already long
Ask staff whether the line is for walk-in sales, preorders or both, and whether they have announced a stock limit. Best Buy’s guidance says there is no set time to begin forming a line and that a position does not guarantee availability. Decide whether the expected wait is worth the uncertain outcome rather than assuming the line itself creates a reservation.
The queue blocks a doorway or roadway
Move where staff or security direct you. Keep emergency routes, sidewalks, traffic, neighboring businesses and pickup lanes open. A line that must be relocated can delay everyone, including customers with confirmed orders.
You cannot arrive within the hold window
Review the order’s cancellation and extension options immediately. Best Buy’s general policy describes five days for regular pickup, while GameStop’s in-store preorder guidance describes 48 hours after release; neither period should be assumed for a different order or event. Ask whether another authorized collector can pick up the item.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhich older advice should you ignore?
Best Buy’s November 5, 2020 console-launch article used the reader question “What do I need to bring with me?” and discussed ID plus a confirmation email or code. That article is historical launch guidance, not current operational policy. Use it only to understand the kinds of documents a launch may request; your current order and event notice take precedence.
Likewise, a community post saying customers should arrive at a particular hour is not a universal rule. The retailer may announce a queue time, decline to set one, or change the process for a specific store. Only the current event notice and staff directions can establish what applies to your launch.
