Nintendo Switch 2 has 256GB of built-in storage, but expanding it for games requires a microSD Express card—not the standard microSD cards used with the original Switch. Expansion is optional, yet current price examples show that adding capacity can mean a substantial extra purchase.
How much storage does Switch 2 have?
Switch 2 includes 256GB of internal storage, with some space reserved for system use. That is eight times the original Switch’s 32GB, according to the Associated Press’s launch-era comparison. You do not need to buy an expansion card simply to use the console: Nintendo says no individual game currently requires one.

An expansion card is useful if you want to keep more downloaded games installed and avoid deleting software to make room. The card is sold separately.

Which memory cards work with Switch 2?
For expanded Switch 2 game storage, Nintendo supports microSD Express cards only. A regular microSD card—even one used with the original Switch—cannot save or load Switch 2 games. Nintendo lists support for microSD Express cards up to 2TB.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
On first use, a microSD Express card requires an internet system update. Nintendo recommends using one card: data kept on multiple cards cannot simply be combined by inserting them together later. A regular microSD card can still be used to import original Switch screenshots and videos, but not for other Switch 2 data storage.
What can an expansion card store?
A microSD Express card can hold downloaded software, software updates, DLC, screenshots, and video captures. Save data stays in the console’s system memory; it cannot be saved or copied to the card. Nintendo also says external USB hard drives are not currently supported.

Physical games do not always eliminate storage needs. Game-key cards, for example, act as keys to download a game and do not contain the full game data. This is a format used by some releases, not a description of every physical Switch 2 game.

The listings come from different dates and deal contexts, so they are not a like-for-like price comparison. To assess a current offer, compare its price per added gigabyte as well as the total capacity, your installed library, and whether you would rather delete and redownload games than pay for more room.

Start with how much software you expect to keep installed. If the built-in space is enough for your library, an expansion card is unnecessary. If you regularly run short of room, compare the live regional prices of compatible microSD Express cards and choose a capacity that fits your budget and expected library. Do not buy a standard microSD card for Switch 2 game storage, regardless of its capacity.
