It now requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership and an internet connection. The Nintendo Switch App remains an option for voice chat in some compatible older Nintendo Switch games, but not Switch 2-exclusive games. A separate phone or computer call is another fallback, though it is not a Nintendo-integrated chat option.
The right choice depends mostly on what game your group is playing and whether everyone can meet the requirements for that chat route. GameChat is the on-console option for Switch 2 players; the app is a narrower choice for supported older software; and a call on another device is independent of Nintendo’s chat features. This guide explains the trade-offs, how to get started, and what not to assume about headsets, game audio, cameras, and compatibility.

Which voice chat option should you use?
| Option | Works with | What you need and key limits | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| GameChat | Switch 2 games, compatible Switch games played on Switch 2, or no game running | Switch 2, Nintendo Switch Online, an internet connection, and friends on your Friend List who have approved you. A session can include up to 12 friends; up to four can use video or screen sharing at once. | Friends who want Nintendo-native chat on the console |
| Nintendo Switch App voice chat | Some supported Nintendo Switch software, including compatible games played on Switch 2; not Switch 2-exclusive games | A supported iOS or Android device, internet access, a linked Nintendo Account, and Nintendo Switch Online. Voice chat is for account holders age 13 or older and starts only in supported multiplayer modes. | Players in a compatible older game, especially if their group already uses the app |
| Separate phone or computer call | External to Nintendo’s documented Switch chat features | A separate device and calling service. Nintendo’s documentation does not establish Switch 2 integration, compatibility, audio mixing, or a particular setup. | Friends who already coordinate outside Nintendo services |
GameChat is the default to try first when everyone is playing on Switch 2. The app is a narrower, game-dependent route; check that the specific title supports it before planning a session. A separate call can work as an independent arrangement, but do not assume it will combine with the console’s game audio or controls.
A quick way to choose is to start with the game. If your group is playing a Switch 2-exclusive title, the Nintendo Switch App is not the route for its voice chat; consider GameChat or an independent call. If you are playing compatible Nintendo Switch software, check whether the app supports voice chat for that title and multiplayer mode. If the group wants a Nintendo-native room, GameChat is the direct choice, provided participants meet its requirements.

How GameChat works on Switch 2
GameChat is a console feature accessed from the Switch 2 C Menu. It can be used while playing a game or when you are not playing. For voice, the console’s built-in microphone is enough: you do not need to buy a dedicated microphone or headset just to start chatting.
To invite friends, use the GameChat controls in the C Menu and select friends from your Friend List. They must have approved you as a friend. A room supports up to 12 friends. Within that group, no more than four people can use video or share their screen at the same time; other participants can join by audio. This makes GameChat suitable for a larger group even when only a few people want to share video or gameplay.
The participant limits describe two different things: the overall room can include up to 12 friends, but video and screen sharing are more limited. At most four people can use video or share a screen at once, while others remain audio-only. If your group has more than four people, you do not need everyone to turn on a camera or share a screen in order to join the session. Plan around the four-person visual-sharing limit if several friends expect to show video or gameplay.

Nintendo Switch Online is now required for GameChat, along with a persistent internet connection. Nintendo’s temporary open-access period ran from June 5, 2025, through March 31, 2026; that introductory access has ended. Do not rely on older descriptions that say GameChat can be used without a membership. Nintendo Support’s GameChat Guide and FAQ lists the current requirements and the dates of that temporary period.
That means a Switch 2 console and built-in microphone alone are not enough: the membership and internet requirements still apply. If you are arranging a group session, make sure participants understand that requirement before choosing GameChat. The support information cited here does not provide a membership price, so check Nintendo’s current membership information for the applicable cost rather than relying on an outdated amount.
Nintendo notes that chat delay may vary with network conditions and physical distance between participants. Its cited support information does not give a typical latency figure or a quantified audio-quality comparison, so there is no reliable number to use when estimating how responsive a particular session will feel. A delay is possible, but the documentation does not define a threshold or promise that a particular connection will eliminate it.
Adding video
Video is optional. Connect a compatible USB camera to the console to use it in GameChat. Nintendo Switch 2 Camera is one option, but it is not required for voice chat. Nintendo does not guarantee that every third-party USB camera will work; use the console’s Test USB Camera feature to check a device before relying on it.

In other words, there are two distinct purchase questions. If you only want voice chat, the built-in microphone means a dedicated microphone purchase is unnecessary to get started. If you want to appear on video, you need a compatible USB camera; the Switch 2 Camera is a dedicated option, and another USB camera might work but is not guaranteed. Test a third-party camera on the console instead of assuming that its USB connection ensures compatibility.
A camera is not a workaround for the membership requirement, and it is not needed simply because a friend is using video. The room can have audio-only participants alongside those using video or screen sharing, subject to the four-person limit for those visual features.
Game voice chat cannot run alongside GameChat
If a game has its own voice-chat feature, you cannot use that feature at the same time as a GameChat session. Nintendo’s guidance is to exit GameChat before switching to the game’s voice chat. Choose one route for the session rather than expecting the console-native room and an in-game chat feature to operate together.

This matters when a group is deciding between a game’s own communication feature and the Switch 2 system feature. GameChat is not an additional voice layer that can simply sit over a game’s voice chat. If your friends specifically want to use a game’s own feature, leave GameChat first. If the group wants to use GameChat, do not plan on simultaneously keeping the in-game voice-chat feature active.

Using the Nintendo Switch App for compatible games
The Nintendo Switch App is a legacy-compatible option, not a universal Switch 2 voice-chat service. It supports voice chat in some compatible Nintendo Switch software, including some supported titles when played on Switch 2. It does not provide app voice chat for Switch 2-exclusive games. Availability also depends on entering a multiplayer mode that supports voice chat; simply opening the app or starting the game is not enough.
Compatibility is therefore not a yes-or-no answer for every Switch title or every play session. The software needs to support the app’s voice-chat feature, and players need to enter a multiplayer mode that supports it. A game working on Switch 2 does not by itself mean that the app can provide voice chat for it. Likewise, the fact that a group has the app installed does not make unsupported software compatible.
- Install the Nintendo Switch App on a supported iOS or Android device and sign in with the Nintendo Account linked to your console.
- Launch a compatible game and enter a multiplayer mode that supports voice chat.
- When prompted, start voice chat from the smart device. Other app users can join as they enter the online game.
The order matters: the app’s game voice chat starts from a supported multiplayer mode, rather than from the app alone. If you open the app but have not joined a compatible mode, it cannot start that game’s voice chat. Once the session has been started, other app users can join as they enter the online game.
App voice chat requires Nintendo Switch Online, a supported smart device, an internet connection, and a linked Nintendo Account. Nintendo limits this app voice-chat feature to account holders age 13 and older. Confirm that the particular game and mode support the feature, since compatibility is not the same across all Switch software.
There are several separate requirements to check before relying on the app: the game and mode need to be supported; the phone or other smart device must be supported and connected to the internet; the app user must sign in with the Nintendo Account linked to the console; and Nintendo Switch Online is required. The age restriction applies to app voice chat: Nintendo says account holders must be 13 or older. A friend who cannot meet one of those conditions should not assume that installing the app will be enough to join.
Headsets and hearing game audio
You can connect headphones or a headset to the smart device for app chat. Bluetooth headsets or headphones need to support HSP or HFP. This only addresses the phone-side chat connection: Nintendo cautions that game audio normally comes from the console or TV and is not heard through the smart device. Therefore, using a phone headset for chat does not automatically create one combined headset mix of game sound and voices.
A Bluetooth headset is thus an optional accessory for the app route, not a requirement for GameChat. If you are choosing one specifically to use with the phone app, check for HSP or HFP support. That requirement concerns connecting the headset to the smart device for chat; it does not establish that the headset can receive Switch 2 game audio, or that it will combine console sound and phone chat in one signal.
Before buying equipment, decide what problem you are trying to solve. For app chat, a phone-connected headset can make it easier to hear the conversation on the smart device. For GameChat voice, the console already has a microphone, so a separate mic is not required just to begin. For video, look at a compatible USB camera instead. None of these options should be treated as a guaranteed way to route both game audio and chat into one headset.
When a separate phone or computer call makes sense
A call on a separate device is an independent fallback for friends who already use an external calling service. It may be convenient when a game is not compatible with the Nintendo Switch App, but it should not be described as built-in Switch 2 voice chat. Nintendo’s cited documentation does not establish support for any specific outside service, how it interacts with a game, or whether game sound and call audio can be mixed.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

Before settling on this route, decide where each person will hear the game and the call. The app’s phone-audio limitation is a useful warning: a chat running on a smart device does not itself route console or TV sound to that device. Any separate audio arrangement depends on the devices and service the group chooses, and should be checked independently.
This option is best understood as a separate conversation, not a special Switch 2 feature. Friends need to coordinate the outside call themselves, and each participant should independently confirm that their chosen device and service do what they need. Nintendo’s support information does not name a supported outside service, prescribe setup steps, or confirm a way to merge a call with game audio. In particular, do not assume that a familiar calling service is integrated just because it can run on a phone or computer.
A separate call may still fit a group that already has a preferred way to talk and is willing to use an additional device. It is not a substitute for checking the game and chat setup, though. The call does not change whether a Nintendo Switch title supports app voice chat, does not remove GameChat’s membership requirement, and does not guarantee that console sound will reach the device handling the call.
Privacy and practical expectations
Nintendo says GameChat voice and video content is temporarily stored on participating consoles. If someone submits a report, the last three minutes of chat can be included with it. This is worth knowing before joining a session, especially if participants expect voice or video chat to be ephemeral.
The reporting detail is specific: Nintendo says the last three minutes can be included when a participant submits a report. It does not mean that every conversation is automatically sent as a report. Still, people in a session should understand that voice and video content is temporarily stored on participating consoles and that a reported session can include a recent portion of the chat.
Chat performance can depend on network environment and physical distance. Nintendo warns that delay may occur, but does not publish a quantified latency range in the cited support material. If a conversation feels delayed, the available documentation supports checking the connection and considering distance; it does not provide a guaranteed fix or a numeric threshold.
Do not compare GameChat and another option using a claimed latency number or audio-quality ranking unless there is a separate, reliable measurement for the exact setup. Nintendo’s support material says delay may occur based on network environment and physical distance, but supplies no figure for typical delay and no quantified audio-quality comparison. The practical point is that chat performance can vary, not that one specific delay is expected.
Choose based on the game and group
- Everyone has Switch 2 and wants the console’s own chat: Use GameChat, provided each participant meets the membership and connection requirements.
- You are playing an older Switch title: Check whether that specific software and multiplayer mode support Nintendo Switch App voice chat. If so, the app can be used on a supported phone, including for some compatible games played on Switch 2.
- The game is Switch 2-exclusive: The Nintendo Switch App voice-chat route is not supported for that category; use GameChat or coordinate an independent call outside Nintendo’s documented chat features.
- You only need voice: GameChat does not require buying a microphone; the console has one built in. A camera is relevant only if you want video.
- You want game sound and chat through one headset: Do not assume the Switch App will provide that mix. Nintendo says console or TV game audio normally is not heard from the smart device.
For a low-friction plan, have the group answer a few questions before everyone joins: Is the game Switch 2-exclusive or compatible Nintendo Switch software? If it is an older title, does the particular game and multiplayer mode support app voice chat? Does everyone who wants GameChat have Nintendo Switch Online and internet access? If using the app, does each participant have a supported device, linked Nintendo Account, and meet the age requirement? Those checks help identify a workable route before the session starts.
Equipment decisions come after the chat route. GameChat voice needs no separate microphone. A camera matters only for people who want to use video, and third-party USB camera compatibility is not guaranteed. A phone-connected headset may be useful for app chat, but Bluetooth models need HSP or HFP and do not automatically bring TV or console game sound into the phone. A separate call is independent and needs its own setup.

Do you need Nintendo Switch Online for GameChat?
Yes. Nintendo Switch Online is now required, along with a persistent internet connection. Nintendo’s temporary membership-free access ran from June 5, 2025, through March 31, 2026, and has ended. Older explanations that describe GameChat as available without a membership may refer to that temporary period.

Nintendo’s cited Switch 2 support information does not establish Discord integration or a supported setup for it. A Discord call on a separate phone or computer would be an outside call, not a documented Switch 2 chat feature. Check the service and devices independently, and do not assume game audio will be mixed into the call.
Does the Nintendo Switch App work for Switch 2 games?
It works for some compatible Nintendo Switch software when played on Switch 2, but it does not provide app voice chat for Switch 2-exclusive games. Even with compatible software, the specific multiplayer mode needs to support voice chat. Check the game and mode rather than assuming that all Switch software works with the app.
Can I use a phone headset with Switch chat?
You can connect headphones or a headset to the smart device for Nintendo Switch App voice chat. Bluetooth models need HSP or HFP support. This is phone-side chat audio: Nintendo says game sounds normally come from the console or TV and are not heard through the smart device. GameChat voice, by contrast, can start with the console’s built-in microphone; a separate headset is not required just to talk.
Can I use GameChat and a game’s voice chat at the same time?
No. Nintendo says in-game voice chat cannot be used during a GameChat session. Exit GameChat before using the game’s own voice-chat feature.

Up to 12 friends can join a session. Up to four can use video or share their screen at a time; other participants can join by audio. The limit for video and screen sharing is not the overall room limit.
Does GameChat have noticeable delay?
Nintendo warns that delay may occur depending on network environment and physical distance between participants. Its support information does not give a typical latency figure or a quantified audio-quality comparison, so there is no specific delay estimate to promise for a session.
What happens to GameChat audio or video if someone reports a participant?
Nintendo says voice and video content is temporarily stored on participating consoles. If a participant submits a report, the last three minutes of chat can be included with it. Participants should know this if they expect every conversation to be ephemeral.
