If the concern is an Echo revealing an item name, change Alexa’s shopping-notification settings separately. Neither option deletes Amazon’s transaction records, and changing Alexa notifications does not make an order private from someone using the same Amazon account.
How do I hide an Amazon order from my family?
For U.S. customers, the clearest supported approach is to stop sharing one adult Amazon sign-on and use Amazon Family with separate adult access. Amazon’s U.S. consumer guidance says adult orders are automatically private from other people in the household when adults have their own access. This is account separation, not a switch that conceals a selected purchase inside a shared login.

That distinction matters if you share an account with a spouse, parent, roommate, or another adult. If you both can sign in to the same Amazon account, the order is part of the same account history; the guidance does not describe a current U.S. option for hiding just one order from another person who can access that login. A separate adult sign-on is the relevant change.

- Check how you currently sign in. If household adults use the same Amazon credentials, identify which adult needs a separate sign-on and account history.
- Open Amazon Family setup and review the terms shown on screen. Amazon’s U.S. Amazon Family help guidance describes linking adult accounts. The setup may involve sharing payment methods for household verification or benefit sharing, depending on the feature and eligibility.
- Link the adult accounts only after reviewing what will be shared. Amazon says adults agree to share payment methods for household verification. Read the current on-screen terms before confirming; do not assume every Prime member, marketplace, or plan has identical eligibility or conditions.
- Make future purchases while signed in to the intended adult account. The separation applies to adult account access and order histories. Check which account is active before placing a private purchase, particularly on a shared browser or device.
Amazon’s stated privacy applies to adult orders in the household setup; it should not be read as a promise that every household interaction is hidden. Linked services and shared devices have their own information flows, and delivery itself is a separate exposure from order-history access.

What separate adult access does—and does not—mean
Amazon describes this as a way for adults in a household to use their own sign-ons while keeping adult orders private from other household members. In practical terms, the goal is to avoid giving another adult access to the sign-on whose order history you want to keep separate. It is not a “private order” mode attached to one checkout, and it is not a way to keep using a shared login while selectively concealing a purchase.
Before relying on the arrangement, check which account is signed in wherever you shop: the Amazon app, a browser, or another shared device. A household can have separate adult accounts in place and still accidentally place an order from the wrong one if a device remains signed in. Amazon’s guidance supports separate access, but it does not remove the need to verify the active account at checkout.
Also distinguish order-history privacy from other household benefits or sharing. Amazon’s help information says account linking involves payment-method sharing for household verification, and the terms can depend on feature and eligibility. Read the current setup screen before linking accounts so you understand the conditions that apply to your household. Separate sign-ons are the central privacy measure; they should not be interpreted as a guarantee that no information or shared service crosses between linked accounts.

Can I hide one purchase if we keep sharing a login?
Amazon’s current U.S. guidance does not provide a supported per-order hiding method for a purchase in a shared adult login. Amazon Staff responder Diane B. said on May 2, 2025, in Amazon.com’s Digital and Device Forum, “You can no longer archive orders.” Do not rely on older U.S. instructions that say to open Your Orders and select Archive order; that button is not a current U.S. solution according to the staff response.
That means there is an important difference between reducing who can see a purchase and erasing it. Amazon Family separates adult sign-ons and order histories as described by Amazon. It does not convert a shared sign-on into separate private histories, and no current U.S. archive procedure is established by the cited Amazon staff response.
If another adult knows the credentials for the account that placed the order, changing a notification preference does not change that access. Likewise, signing out of a device does not create a separate order history if both adults continue to use the same login elsewhere. The durable distinction is which account made the purchase and who can access that account.
Can I delete an Amazon order from my history?
Do not treat account separation or Alexa settings as deletion. Amazon’s privacy notice says purchase history remains accessible through Your Account. The available guidance supports reducing household visibility through separate adult access and controlling certain Alexa notifications; it does not establish a way to permanently delete Amazon’s transaction records.

So, if you want an order absent from Amazon’s own records, the documented options in these U.S. sources do not achieve that. If your goal is instead to keep another household adult from browsing your future orders, separate adult sign-ons are the relevant measure. These are different privacy outcomes and should not be confused.
There are three different ideas that are easy to mix up: an order being less visible to another household member, an order being removed from a default view, and Amazon no longer retaining a transaction record. The current U.S. guidance supports account separation for household order-history privacy and Alexa controls for item-title notifications. It does not establish permanent deletion of Amazon’s purchase record.
How do I stop Alexa from announcing what I ordered?
Alexa shopping notifications are a separate way a purchase can be revealed. Amazon’s U.S. guide gives this path in the Alexa app:
- Open the Alexa app.
- Tap More, then Settings.
- Open Notifications, then Amazon Shopping.
- Turn off the option that allows Alexa to say or show item titles in shopping notifications.
App labels can change as Amazon updates the interface, so the wording on your device may differ slightly. This setting controls Alexa shopping notifications; it does not delete an order or hide it from anyone who can sign in to the Amazon account where the order was placed.

What this setting does—and does not—cover
- It addresses: item titles being spoken or displayed through Alexa shopping notifications.
- It does not address: access to the Amazon order history under a shared login.
- It is separate from: notifications involving linked accounts and shared Amazon Shopping Lists.
Amazon’s Alexa help information says linked-family devices may receive notifications for more than one linked member. The Alexa app’s notification preferences include controls for notifications received from linked accounts and notifications sent to linked accounts. If linked accounts are in use, review those controls as well as the item-title setting; changing one preference should not be assumed to change every linked-account notification.
Amazon also says adults share Amazon Shopping Lists. If a purchase plan or gift is visible on a list, changing order-history access or Alexa item-title announcements will not make that list private. Review the list and linked-account sharing arrangements separately.
Think about the device as a separate audience
Account privacy and device notifications answer different questions. Separate adult sign-ons address who can view the relevant adult order history. The Amazon Shopping notification control addresses whether Alexa says or shows item titles. A household member might not be able to browse a separate adult order history but could still hear a device announcement if that notification preference allows item titles.

For linked Amazon Family accounts, check both directions of the notification preferences: notifications received from linked accounts and notifications sent to linked accounts. Amazon’s help information says linked-family devices may receive other members’ notifications, so do not assume that one person’s item-title setting controls every notification that can reach a shared device. The exact controls available to you appear in the Alexa app, and labels can change as the interface changes.
Which option fits the privacy problem?
| Option | What it protects | Setup | What remains exposed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Separate adult sign-ons through Amazon Family | Adult order-history access between household members, as described in Amazon’s U.S. consumer guidance. | Link adult accounts and use each adult’s own sign-on; review the terms and any payment-method sharing for verification or benefit sharing. | Shared lists, linked-device notifications, and physical delivery visibility are separate surfaces to consider. |
| Alexa shopping-notification controls | Item names spoken or shown in Alexa shopping notifications. | Change the Amazon Shopping notification preference in the Alexa app. | Does not separate order histories or hide the order from another person using the same Amazon account. |
These measures can complement each other, but they solve different problems. Choose account separation when another adult should not browse your order history through the shared household login. Change Alexa preferences when the specific risk is an Echo announcing an item title. If both are concerns, address both surfaces and check linked-account settings and lists as well.
The practical tradeoff is setup versus scope. Amazon Family requires linking adult accounts, reviewing terms, and using distinct sign-ons; in return, it is the documented U.S. route for keeping adult order histories separate. Alexa controls take less setup—a preference change in the app—but cover item-title announcements rather than account-history access. Neither option makes delivery at a shared address invisible, and neither should be treated as deleting Amazon’s record.
Does Amazon still let U.S. customers archive orders?
According to the May 2, 2025 Amazon Staff response, no: Diane B. wrote, “You can no longer archive orders.” Older U.S. walkthroughs that direct readers to Your Orders and an Archive order control are therefore outdated for the U.S. instructions covered here.
There is a marketplace difference. An About Amazon guide for the United Kingdom still describes archiving a previous order from desktop Your Orders, removing it from the default history view, and locating it again under Archived Orders. That UK procedure conflicts with the later U.S. staff response and should not be presented as a current U.S. method. If your Amazon marketplace is outside the United States, check the account controls and guidance for that marketplace rather than assuming either country’s instructions apply.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThis difference is why location matters when following an order-history tutorial. Amazon’s UK guide describes a procedure for the UK marketplace, while Amazon Staff’s U.S. forum response says U.S. customers can no longer archive orders. If you shop on a non-U.S. Amazon site, use that marketplace’s current account controls and help guidance. Do not assume the U.S. instructions or the UK archive procedure apply everywhere.
Practical checks before a sensitive purchase
- Confirm the active account. On a shared computer, app, or browser, verify which Amazon adult sign-on is currently in use before ordering.
- Identify the actual disclosure route. Order-history access, Alexa announcements, linked-account notifications, shared lists, and delivery visibility are different issues. Pick settings that address the relevant route instead of expecting one setting to cover all of them.
- Review what account linking shares. Amazon Family setup may require payment-method sharing for household verification or benefit sharing; read the terms shown for your accounts before linking.
- Check linked-account notification preferences. Amazon says linked-family Alexa devices may receive other members’ notifications, and the app offers controls for notifications to and from linked accounts.
- Inspect shared Shopping Lists. Amazon says adults share these lists, so remove or avoid placing a sensitive item on a list other household members can see.
- Do not count on an archive or delete button. The U.S. staff response says orders can no longer be archived, and Amazon’s privacy notice says purchase history is accessible in Your Account.
Amazon’s Alexa FAQ also identifies where details for orders placed through Alexa can be reviewed. An Alexa purchase still relates to an Amazon order; notification preferences should not be mistaken for a separate private purchase record.

A quick decision checklist
- If the issue is another adult browsing past orders, focus on separate adult sign-ons through Amazon Family. Alexa notification settings do not solve shared-login order-history access.
- If the issue is an item being spoken or shown by an Echo, turn off item-title shopping notifications in the Alexa app. Review linked-account notification preferences if accounts are linked.
- If the issue is a shared list, check the Amazon Shopping Lists themselves. Amazon says adults share lists, so an order-history or Alexa change does not make list contents private.
- If the issue is the package arriving at a shared address, understand that neither account separation nor Alexa settings controls who sees a physical delivery.
- If the goal is to erase Amazon’s record, the cited U.S. guidance does not establish that outcome. Amazon’s privacy notice says purchase history remains accessible through Your Account.
This checklist can help avoid the common mistake of changing the first setting that comes to mind without identifying how the information might be seen. A sensitive purchase can involve an account, a device, a list, or a package; each is a different exposure point.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What this means for a surprise or gift
If the recipient or another household member can open the purchasing account, a surprise order placed in that shared login is not made private by turning off Alexa item titles. The U.S. guidance does not establish a way to conceal an individual shared-login order. Separate adult access is the documented approach for keeping adult order histories apart, while Alexa controls reduce one particular kind of spoken or displayed disclosure.
Neither method guarantees that a physical package will be unseen at the address, and neither removes Amazon’s transaction record. Think through the account, device, list, and delivery surfaces that matter in your household rather than treating “hide an order” as one universal setting.
For a gift, the most important first question is who can access the Amazon account used to buy it. If the recipient or another household adult has that same sign-on, Alexa silence will not conceal the order history. If the purchase is made from a separate adult sign-on, also consider whether the item appears on an Amazon Shopping List, whether linked-account notifications can reach a shared Alexa device, and whether the delivery itself will reveal the package.
Do not assume that a setting described as private covers every step from checkout to delivery. Amazon’s documented controls separate adult order histories and let you manage Alexa shopping notifications; they do not promise invisibility of a package at a shared address or deletion of the transaction record.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I hide an Amazon order from my family?
For U.S. customers, Amazon recommends Amazon Family with separate adult sign-ons. Amazon says adult orders are automatically private from other people in the household when adults have their own access. This separates adult order histories; it is not a way to hide one selected order inside a shared login.

Can I hide an Amazon purchase from my spouse if we share one account?
The current U.S. guidance does not describe a supported way to hide an individual order from someone who can sign in to the same adult Amazon account. Amazon Staff responder Diane B. said on May 2, 2025, “You can no longer archive orders.” Separate adult access is the documented approach for separating future order histories.

Can I delete an Amazon order from my history?
The cited U.S. guidance does not establish a way to permanently delete Amazon’s transaction records. Amazon’s privacy notice says purchase history remains accessible through Your Account. Account separation can reduce household visibility, but it is not deletion.
How do I stop Alexa from announcing what I ordered?
In the Alexa app, go to More > Settings > Notifications > Amazon Shopping, then turn off the option that allows Alexa to say or show item titles in shopping notifications. App labels may vary. This affects Alexa shopping notifications, not access to a shared Amazon order history.
Does turning off Alexa shopping notifications hide an order from someone using my Amazon account?
No. The setting controls item titles spoken or shown through Alexa shopping notifications. It does not prevent someone with access to the Amazon account from viewing its order history, and it does not delete the order.
Can linked Alexa accounts still reveal another household member’s activity?
Amazon says linked-family devices may receive notifications for more than one linked member. The Alexa app has controls for notifications received from linked accounts and sent to linked accounts. Review those preferences separately from the item-title setting. Amazon also says adults share Amazon Shopping Lists.
Can I still archive Amazon orders in the United States?
Amazon Staff responder Diane B. said on May 2, 2025, “You can no longer archive orders.” Amazon’s UK guide describes an archive procedure for the UK marketplace, but that should not be treated as current U.S. instructions. Marketplace features can differ.
Does Amazon Family make a gift package invisible at home?
No such guarantee is established. Amazon Family addresses adult order-history privacy, and Alexa notification settings address item-title announcements. Neither controls whether another person sees a package delivered to a shared address.
The Bottom Line
For U.S. households, use separate adult sign-ons through Amazon Family to keep adult order histories apart, and turn off Alexa item-title shopping notifications if an Echo could reveal a purchase. Check linked-account notification preferences and shared Shopping Lists separately. A shared-login order cannot currently be archived under Amazon’s May 2, 2025 U.S. staff guidance, and these privacy steps do not delete Amazon’s purchase record or hide a physical delivery.
